A peek inside the mind of a writer (or at least this writer)

I’m hard at work on my latest Legend Hunter book (entitled Treasure Me due in stores in 2011) and things are going fairly well for the rough draft. This is a blessing considering the last book was one of those pull-teeth-for-every-word kind of books. I’m really enjoying the characters and the change of setting, this book takes place largely in Scotland, a different pace from my normal London setting. And like I said I’m making good progress. I’m about 3/4 of the way done with this first draft. But I’m having a difficult time focusing.

Now this lack of focus is due, in part, to the fact that The Professor and I are building a house, a house we will close on this month! So I’m super excited and mentally decorating and trying to remember what it is that I already own that’s been in storage for nearly ten months. But that’s not the only distraction. You see I’ve been hearing voices. Now for most people that’s a sure sign to call a doctor, but for writers this is a perfectly normal occurrence. Characters talk to us. Which is great when you’re writing a book. Especially a book on deadline…

Except when those character voices are for book ideas you have no business thinking about. Here I am diligently working on this book and yet I keep hearing these two characters from a new idea, and they’re having the most intriguing conversations. Now I know for a fact that that book, nor any other, will be any easier to write than the one I’m currently working on. But despite the fact that I know this, I’m able to delude myself. As if my muse is a siren seducing me with tempting morsels of a new and wonderful and shiny idea. It’s like chocolate chip cookies baking, that delicious aroma filling my senses and making my mouth water. That’s what this new idea is doing. I’m dying to write the proposal, dying to brainstorm the whole concept with my writing buds. But I try to keep it aside and focus on the task at hand.

Somedays this is harder to do than others. Like last weekend, I woke up Saturday morning obnoxiously early because these damn characters were having a conversation. I tried to go back to sleep. I rolled over. I tossed, then turned, but they wouldn’t shut up. Finally I got up and opened a new file and wrote the prologue. Now it’s saved with the rest of the notes and tidbits of dialogue I’ve overheard and it is waiting, not so patiently in the wings while I do the job I’m currently paid to do.

In the meantime I’ll keep working on Treasure Me and if those pesky characters keep talking, then I’ll jot down their words and hope someday when I can share their story with you as well.

So how about you? What are your temptations? How do you keep focused when your attention is being divided?

Robyn I love this!! When I am working on a new WIP and not editing, I keep a journal next to my bed. It never fails, I get the worst sleep for those couple months and my characters can’t participate with eachother during the day. They always have to wake me up and discuss what is going on in their life. My DH is so cute, ‘What are the talking about tonight?’ He rolls back over and he does go back to sleep. Of course I’m up all night after that!!

I just accept that I’m basically schizophrenic and thinking about 5 things at once…if I don’t fight it, I seem to do better! ;-)

Like Kristan, I just multi-task. I’ve been known to write 2 books at once. But lately my temptation is to read or sleep rather than write!

Turns out I have no ability to focus at all! I’m living through a kitchen renovation/addition and there’s a lot of hammering, plaster dust, disarray, etc etc etc… Then there’s Dealing With Contractors. Every day there’s a new question. It’s driving me nuts. And I’m getting nothing done. [sigh] I’ll be glad when this is over! Then maybe I’ll be able to focus and some new characters will talk to me (people who aren’t discussing crown molding and granite).

Congratulations on the house, Robyn! How exciting! I’d be distracted, too.

I’ve resigned myself that story ADD is a way of life. My critique partners and I joke about being “unfaithful” to the book in which we’re currently “engaged.” Once we “have” that one, the next one always looks so much better. ;-) But I’ve learned, too, that if I spend too much time “cheating” on my current work in progress with the next idea, by the time I get to the book that’s been tempting me, it’s no more fun than the last – even though I know it’s important to get those ideas and snippets of conversation down before they fade into the ether . Ahhh, such is the life of the fickle writer.

thank you! I have some Victorian England Romance manuscripts and am trying to edit one so I can start querying and yet all I can think about are these Renaissance French characters who popped into my head the other night.

Maybe I’m a real writer (just not a real editor!)

Since I’m one of your CP’s I should probably chide you, but I’m not going to, because Sunday night I fell asleep with an image of my hero being led through the halls of his high school in handcuffs and winking at the heroine as he passed. No, not the hero of the book I’m writing now, but the hero of the book I’m *not* supposed to be working on. Sometimes, they are just *so* pesky!

Glad to know I’m not the only one. Margo, I can only imagine how distracting that will be. Once we move into our house it will be interesting to see how distracted I get with the construction around us. They’re building a house right next to us and there’s an empty lot on the other side and behind so I’m sure they’ll build there soon enough.

LOL, Emily, I love that you can’t chide me.
