Who lives in those houses?

Every June my husband attends a work-related conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida. It’s a family-friendly affair, so that means our daughter and I get to tag along and pretend to be ladies of leisure in one of the wealthiest cities in the world.

Sure, June is considered “off season.” The privileged have flown their winter mansions for cooler digs up north or in Europe… or wherever people with deep pockets go when the heat index is 110. But for us, it’s a little vacation from reality where we can soak up the Palm Beach sun and have a nibble of the good life.

Since we just returned yesterday and I’m still buzzing from the trip, I thought I’d give you my own personal tour of what I love most about Palm Beach.

This is Royal Palm Way, the gateway to Palm Beach. Such a majestic entry into the beautiful city.

I never tire of gawking at the mansions that line Ocean Boulevard (which is also known as “Billionaire’s Row”). Good thing, because the hotel is located at the end of South Ocean Boulevard, just north of the city of Lake Worth. To get to Worth Ave, you must travel a six-mile stretch that is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean — and mansions– and on the west by the Intracostal Waterway (separating Palm Beach from West Palm Beach) — and mansions. Six miles of the most unfathomable real estate. Every time we drive it, one of us utters, “Who lives in these houses?!”

Well, to name a few: Marjorie Merriweather Post – Post Cereal heiress, socialite, philanthropist and wife of E.F. Hutton; Donald Trump; and the Kennedys have all lived there at one time or another.

This is a photo of the infamous Palm Beach Kennedy compound, which was known as the “Winter White House” in the 1960s. It’s located at 1095 North Ocean Boulevard and is reportedly worth around $16 million.

This is Mar-a-Lago (located 1100 South Ocean Boulevard). It was built by Marjorie Merriweather Post and recently sold by Donald Trump for $100 million dollars.

Personally, I love this house.

Also, I love the color of the water. It’s so blue. This is a shot of the beach off Ocean Boulevard.

This is Worth Avenue. The east coast Rodeo Drive.

This is my favorite restaurant, Ta-boo. It’s located on Worth Avenue. Ta-boo offers delicious food and the most gracious, welcoming service. The warm people and promise of a great meal keep us coming back year after year. That’s my car reflected in the door. I shot this photo as I was driving away after lunch.

More of the gorgeous coconut palms that epitomize south Florida.

And then there is the amazing hotel. Staying at any Four Seasons is an event (the day we arrived there was a wedding and the flowers alone were like something from a fantasy – the most voluptuous pink, lavender and white roses I’ve ever seen… wish I could’ve snapped a photo, but my camera wasn’t handy). There’s a fabulous pool and newly renovated spa, and the beach. Even if we chose to never venture outside the hotel, it would be a wonderful vacation… Alas, we can’t resist the allure of Palm Beach…

Now, we’re back to real life and counting the days until next year’s get away. What’s your favorite escape?

Every year DH and our 2 sons go to the US for a 2 weeks “road trip”. We choose our cities in advance and book the different hotels, so that when we arrive we just need to pick up our car (always a DTS) and follow our itinarary (thx to the GPS). We always discover new places and it’s wonderful. Last year we fell in love with cherokee NC and Atlanta (although if you ask me the whole trip was awesome).
For me it’s the real escape : new places, tons of good food, great hotels with pools and gigantic breakfasts (you american know how to cook !!!), no cleaning, no washing up, no cooking !!! ESCAPE

At Lake Louise, Alberta, there is an old hotel called the Deer Lodge, just down the path from the chateau. It’s a quaint little place with wonderful, unusual rooms (our family of 5 once had a *turret* room and everyone slept comfortably). Great scenery everywhere you look, and you can’t find better hiking trails anywhere!

My favorite vacation spot in the world is a resort called Lapa Rios in Costa Rica. It’ on the Osa Peninsula in the middle of virgin rain forest. There’s fantastic hiking and great food. The resort is luxurious, even though it’s remote.
We’ve been twice now and I can’t wait to take my kids, once they’re old enough (it’s not recommended for kids under 5). The first time we went, when we were checking in to the hotel, a poison dart frog hopped into the lobby. How cool is that?

Gorgeous. I love Pass-a-Grille Beach on the Gulf, just south of St. Pete Beach. It’s quiet, funky, and beautiful. But I adore trips to the NC mountains for a change of pace.

Weird trivia…remember Phyllis A. Whitney? She wrote gothics. Her book Poinciana is set at Mar-a-Lago. Marjorie Post invited her to stay at the house as a guest, and she used it for the setting of the book. Neat, huh?

Oh, that beach is gorgeous. I like to sit by a pool, read a book, and have a fruity drink. I don’t care where the pool is as long as it’s relatively quiet. Sometimes I think it would be fun to have a pool in my backyard, but then I think of all the work to maintain it, and that’s not fun!

I don’t know that I favorite escape. I like big cities for the energy they supply and the stories that I see everywhere I look. Right now I have to say London is my new favorite escape. I love walking past a brand new building and then a church that’s been serving the community 1190! That’s just so cool.

    PS Love the pics, Nancy.

Booklover1335 – I hear ya! It’s always refreshing to get away from home.

Emmanuelle – How fun! Are you coming to the US this year? I know what you mean about the food!! I had dessert twice a day while we were away.

Margo – Oooh, I’ve always wanted to stay in a place with a turret. There was a turreted house down the street from us in our old neighborhood and we called it the castle. I was always fascinated by it.

Emily – Lapa Rios sounds beautiful. But I don’t know about those frogs!! That sounds a little scary. Do they really throw poison darts?!

Mimi – I had no idea Poinciana was set at Mar-a-Lago. Very cool. I’m going to hunt down that book. Thanks for that piece of info/history.

Shana – here’s to quiet pools! So relaxing.

Kathy – I agree. An escape doesn’t have to be only quiet and relaxing. Sometimes nothing but a big city will do. Like you, I’m a huge lover of blending history with modernity. I haven’t been to London in ages. But I want to go back.
