Last year, seven Harlequin Historical and Mills&Boon authors were invited to write short stories about real historical royal weddings to celebrate the upcoming wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. They were released in digital formats only in April 2011 and were a big hit with readers looking for stories about some of William’s ancestors or those on the throne (before he will be.) Since we know that not all royal matches have been love matches, we were invited to choose either the actual royal couple involved or to use our own fictional couple and set their story at the royal wedding.

And we were off! Time was short – we were invited right around Christmas week in 2010 and the stories were needed by mid-January for publication in April – so we were writing at breakneck speed. The collection spans more than 8 centuries and all include Author’s Notes to give some historical background or context to our choices and research. While others were shopping for fascinators to wear while watching Wills and Kate, we were hard at work creating these stories!

We were recently thrilled (and surprised) to learn that Mills& Boon would be publishing the collection IN PRINT as a February Special release and so it has – ROYAL WEDDINGS THROUGH THE AGES is a beautiful trade-sized paperback now available in the UK.

So — what are the stories about? Why did the authors choose their particular time period, royal couple or wedding? Let’s ask the authors!

My own story – WHAT THE DUCHESS WANTS – is about Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry of Anjou(who would be Henry II of England). I have always been drawn to Eleanor and have featured both her and Henry in several of my medieval HHs. I have always through that, since Eleanor had the extremely rare opportunity of choosing her (2nd) husband, there must have been something more personal, more attractive, more passionate in her choice of Henry of Anjou. She could have her choice from among Europe’s elite and eligible nobles and royals – so why Henry? That drove me to tell this story!

Michelle Willingham set her story in 1191 – LIONHEART’S BRIDE is about King Richard and Princess Berengaria. “I write primarily in the medieval time period, and choosing the story of Richard the Lionheart allowed me to create a second generation story from my MacEgan Brothers series of Irish warriors,” Michelle said.

Bronwyn Scott’s PRINCE CHARMING IN DISGUISE is set at the wedding of Prince George and Caroline of Ansbach in 1704. “I wanted to pick something in the Georgian period and mostly I wanted to pick a real marriage that was considered happy,” Bronwyn said. “When I saw this, I knew I had the one I wanted. I’ve always wanted to write ‘historical fiction’ ala Philipa Gregory or others of that genre and this seemed like a perfect chance to experiment with that.”

A PRINCELY DILEMMA by Elizabeth Rolls is set at the ill-fated wedding of George, Prince of Wales, and Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795. “I chose Prinny and Caroline because their marriage was such an unmitigated disaster from start to end and the scandal surrounding it from the start gave me lots to work with. I have to admit that with the Maria Fitzherbert – Prinny – Princess Caroline situation I could see certain parallels with a more recent royal marriage. Which just goes to show that there really is nothing new underneath the sun. Plus it was fun to slip back a little further in time into the late 18th century.

Going back to the continent, Lucy Ashford featured Napoleon and Marie-Louise’s wedding her THE PROBLEM WITH JOSEPHINE. “I chose the wedding of Napoleon and Princess Marie Louise of Austria in 1810, partly because I love the Napoleonic era, and partly because it was such a huge, lavish wedding – fabulous celebrations, ending with fireworks all along the Seine. The wedding took place in the Louvre, which was full of Napoleon’s prized art collection (much of it looted!),” Lucy reports. “And while I was reading up about it further, I discovered that at the last minute, some unknown courtier suddenly discovered that there were lots of portrayals of Napoleon’s previous wife, the notorious Josephine, still in the Louvre – but painted into larger works, which were impossible to remove. So, at the last minute, they had to be painted out, or Napoleon would have gone crazy when he saw them on his wedding day!”

Ann Lethbridge chose Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold’s wedding in 1816 for her story – PRINCESS CHARLOTTE’S CHOICE. “I chose the wedding of Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold because it happened in the Regency, which is when all my books are set, and despite all the odds against it, theirs was a real romance.”

And last, or most modern of the historical stories is Mary Nichols’ WITH VICTORIA’S BLESSING set at the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. “I chose Victoria and Albert for my Royal Wedding because I wanted to write a love story and theirs was a love true love match. So many Royal weddings in the past have been politically driven and consequently disastrous and I wanted to my fictional hero and heroine to overcome obstacles and be happy too.
In trying to be both romantic and also historically-accurate, the authors discovered some fun facts while researching for theirs.”

Since readers ask us where our ideas come from, I thought the authors could share a tidbit or two that they found interesting!

Elizabeth reported that “Since Prinny took back the pearl bracelets he gave Caroline and gave them to his current mistress, Lady Jersey, I thought I should try to find something positive to write about him, so I focused on his legacy to the British Nation which was quite extensive. Windsor Castle, the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, a Royal Collection to rival that sold by Charles I – and the Brighton Pavilion, which the Rev’d Sidney Smith described as looking as if, ‘…the dome of St Paul’s went down to the sea and pupped’! You can sort of see what he meant and it just made my day reading that.”

Bronwyn discovered that shortly after they married, Caroline came down with small pox and nearly died. George was so devoted to her that he stayed by her side at the risk of his own life—and it was a risk. He did contract the disease and nearly died as well. But they both recovered and went on to have a long marriage.

Surprisingly, Ann found that people often assume that women during this time were prim and proper and thoroughly subdued. Princess Charlotte was a very strong-willed young woman, who grew up in an exceedingly dysfunctional family. She regularly broke the rules set down by her father, the Prince Regent, and got into all kinds of scrapes. Sometimes the ladies set to watch over her turned a blind eye to her shenanigans and sometimes she found ways to avoid their eagle eyes and do what she wanted to do. In the summer of 1814 after Napoleon’s abdication Britain received a great many visits from European nobility and since the Princess was not officially “out” she was unable to participate in many of the festivities. Many thought this was unkind of the Prince Regent. Those Princes were a bit like the rock stars of today, and Princess Charlotte found her own way to meet with the glittering young men at her home and then rid herself of her chaperones. She walked a very fine line and could have been utterly ruined. It seemed to me, reading about her pushing the boundaries she was set, that she wasn’t much different to teenagers today.

Mary revealed that one of the things she learned was that Prince Albert was terribly seasick on his way to England and most of his staff succumbed too, and that also worked well her story, because it gave Richard the opportunity to speak to the Prince and meet a long lost relative destined to help with his courtship of Emily.

And scandalously, Lucy found a fact of ‘artistic’ interest — Jacques, her hero, talks about the famous Canova sculpture of a naked Napoleon, which Napoleon rejected in 1811 as being ‘too athletic’. This statue later came into the possession of the Duke of Wellington and is now on view to the public at Wellington’s former home, Apsley House, in London. How (in)appropriate!

So, real history, seven royal couples, seven weddings – seven phenomenal love stories in one collection for you all to enjoy! Different styles and voices from seven leading Harlequin authors – something for everyone and we hope you’ll give it and us a try!

The authors will be dropping in during the day from all over the US, England and even Australia, so please ask your questions — we all have more interesting tidbits to share and will tell you all about our other upcoming releases, too! Or lawyer shows like THE FIRM or my old favorites BOSTON LEGAL, LA LAW and SHARK? I confess to being a long-time addict of LAW&ORDER in most all of its forms — especially the UK version with. . . sigh. . . Jamie Bamber in its first five seasons.

I really enjoyed stars and celebrities showing up in guest roles, too, even knowing that they’ll be either a) the viillain, or b) the opposing attorney. Jerry Lewis appeared on it and so did Julia Roberts along with many others. And almost the entire cast of the HBO series OZ appeared on the various versions.

I think it was my love of Law&Order that got me bounced from the jury box the last time I was called for jury duty. That or my general fascination in watching people and analyzing their behaviors (as any good writer does)! I made it to the jury box and noticed that the defense team (two young men accused of robbery, etc) were stacking the jury with mothers of boys and single young men and the prosecution team was going for single women and old(er) white men. Interesting, huh? Anyway, I was watching and kind of enjoying/appreciating their strategies when I was dismissed….

So, guess what I’ll be doing today as you’re reading this blog? Yeppers — jury duty! This time I’m going to try to be more circumspect. . . and discreet. . . yeah…sure! I’m packing up my not-yet-read magazines and a few books to take (because jury duty day IS guilt-free reading day) and getting ready to spend the day at the courthouse in Camden.

Have you been called to jury duty? Served on a jury? How did your experience go? Are you as fascinated with law-and-order type tv shows as I am? What’s your favorite? I’ll check in when I can during the day to find out…and to let you know how it’s all going!

I just got one of my favorite yearly emails — the one telling me to expect a package of books in the mail! Now, c’mon, what kind of romance reader would I be if that didn’t make my heart beat a bit stronger? LOL — and I AM a romance reader through and through. So, after I have fun with that box of books, what do I have planned? Well, after reading the other Jaunty Quills upcoming releases, I’ll be looking forward to:

Okay — you all know (or some of you know) that I swear I don’t like vampire romances…….for sooooo many reasons. And I stand by that except when a new Midnight Breed romance comes out from Lara Adrian! LOL! Her vamps are a different twist on the ‘same old’ vampire mythology and these stories are dark and steamy as are the heroes in them. Wow….. This one is special because it also marks Lara’s first hardcover release AND because we finally get to Sterling Chase’s story — woohoo!

Next up on my anticipation list is Kerrelyn Sparks’ WANTED:UNDEAD OR ALIVE — hey! wait a sec! It’s a vampire romance! How could that happen?

Well, I am hooked on this series, too — Kerrelyn’s Love At Stake series has a lighter approach to vampires as well as those other paranormals I’ve sworn never to read — shapeshifters! But I do enjoy these stories about the good vamps fighting the bad vamps to protect humanity — the good vamps’ leader Roman isn’t too bad either!

Okay, okay, before you all think I’ve lost my mind actually talking about vampire romances — I am sooooo waiting for the first book in Madeline Hunter’s next historical series – THE SURRENDER OF MISS FAIRBOURNE – coming in March. OH NO!! Why do Madeline Hunter books always come out on or near my own writing deadlines? I guess I’ll have to work something out with her publisher because there is no way I can NOT read this the day it hits the shelves….. It’s the first of her new Fairbourne Quartet and this time she tackles the world of auction houses. Since I love the rich, historical texture of her stories, I can’t wait for this one.

My newest addiction is Gaelen Foley’s INFERNO CLUB Regency historicals. I found a reference online to Gaelen’s stories involving a secret order of warriors founded in the Middle Ages and still operating in Regency England and France – I was hooked! I raced through the first two and am in the middle of the third — just as the fourth one was released — AND there’s a fifth one coming too! Woohooo for me!

Dear Terri and the Jaunty Quills, thank you so much for inviting me to blog with you. I hope I don’t let the team down, however, because, far from being jaunty, I’m a particularly droopy quill at the moment — and no, that’s not a tacky sexual metaphor it’s the plain truth. I’m downunder and in a summer heatwave — 104F and the air-con has broken down, so I’m wilting. . .

But still, I’m so pleased to be visiting that I will dip my quill in ice-water (not a rude metaphor either) and forge ahead.

Today I want to talk about “the eye of the beholder.”

One of my favorite scenes in a romance is where the hero sees — really sees —the heroine. It’s one of the first signs that he is truly her hero — he starts to notice things about her that no-one else — not even the heroine — does. He sees her true self, not the ordinary person everyone else sees, but someone special, the woman she will become. Transformed by love.

I’m not sure how popular this is with readers. I love it, but I’ve heard some readers say they want a heroine to be self-confident from the get-go. Me, I like more of a journey.

I like a heroine who can get things done, who is smart and courageous in an everyday sense, who will stand up for herself and others where necessary. But I also like her to have some secret vulnerability, and for me, that’s where the hero comes in, because for me, that’s one area in which he shows he’s a hero.

So my heroines aren’t always conventionally beautiful. That’s particularly true of Isabella, my heroine in my new book, BRIDE BY MISTAKE. Not that Bella’s a gargoyle or anything — just that she’s known she’s plain since she was a kid. Had her nose regularly rubbed in the fact, actually. She’s the only daughter of a widowed father and his highest compliment was that she was almost as good as a son. Almost.

War breaks out in Spain (Napoleon) and Bella’s father is killed. His last words are a warning that a forced marriage is planned by a horrid cousin, and Bella must flee to her aunt at the convent of the Broken Angel. She’s just thirteen…

On the way, Bella is attacked, but is rescued by a young English officer, my hero, Luke Ripton — tall, dark and beautiful as an archangel. He rescues her from the forced marriage by marrying her himself. He then escorts her to her aunt in the convent and rides away to war.

Luke never expects to live long enough for it to matter. But when my story starts, the war is over, the annulment is denied, and Luke, now Lord Ripton must come to Spain to collect a wife he’d almost forgotten and doesn’t particularly want.
And Bella? For years she waited, like a princess in a tower, dreaming of her prince, but by now those dreams have withered on the vine. She’s fed up with waiting, she’s about to turn twenty-one and is determined to leave the convent and make her own life.
Of course, that’s when Luke arrives. . . (There’s an excerpt on my website of that scene)

Bella, having arrived at the convent with nothing, has no pretty clothes but her friends in the convent dress her up, curl her hair, dust her skin in rice flour and paint her lips into a small fashionable bow.

This, then was her husband. Isabella tried not to stare.
He was even more beautiful than she remembered. Eight years ago she’d seen him with a child’s eye. But she was a child no longer and he was… he was breathtaking. Tall, dark, his skin burnished with the sun, a rich dark-gold flush along his cheekbones and such fine cheekbones they were, too. His nose was a strong, straight blade, his mouth, severe and beautiful. And his eyes, dark, so dark they looked black, but she knew from before they were the darkest blue she had ever seen. There was no sign of blue now.
She swallowed and held her head higher, knowing what he would see in her, knowing they were ill-matched. The girls had done their best to make her look as beautiful as they could. It wasn’t their fault she looked as she did. She knew she’d never make a beauty. She desperately wished she looked pretty for him.
But she could see in his eyes she didn’t.
Dear God but it was Mama and Papa again, Papa the handsome eagle soaring high and Mama the plain, dowdy little pigeon, bleeding with love for a husband who never looked twice at her.
Mama’s words rose unbidden to her mind. Guard your heart, my little one, for love is pain. Love is nothing but pain.

And Luke sees a thin, young woman with a too-big nose, garishly made up and covered in frills. But the second time he sees her. . . ahh, the second time. . . That’s the moment for me. And that’s just the start of their journey. . .

So what about you? Do you like a heroine with secret vulnerabilities? Or do you want her to be fully confident and kick-ass? What’s the most romantic scene you can think of in a book? I’m giving a book away to someone who leaves a comment.

The gypsy life taught her that humor & love are universal languages and that favorite books can take you home, wherever you are.

Anne started her first novel while backpacking solo around the world.

I’ve been fooled again! I blissfully approach Christmas doing the non-chalant attitude right up until the last-minute panic hits just before the holiday. Then I rush and race around doing all the things that my friends did at a leisurely pace through the whole month. I survive only to discover that the year’s end is rushing towards me at an alarming speed.

Well, it’s happened again — even when I promised myself that I would be ready for it. And as I’m gathering my markers and getting ready to fill in my 2012 calendar, I like to look back and look ahead–at things I’ve done and things I hope to do.

I am really looking forward to the new stories that are swirling around in my head. As I’ve been revising my first romance novels for re-publishing, I’ve gotten some great ideas for other stories – long, short and in-between. Stories that I never noticed the first time around, ones that now seem intriguing and new. It’s funny how the excitement builds and all the possibilities look soooo shiny and sparkly ahead. I can feel the itchy feeling that happens when a new idea is swirling around in my brain…I wonder where they will lead me?

I’ll be doing some traveling this coming year — some personal (hubby and I are coming up on our 35th Anniversary in 2012!) and some for my work (both writing and dental hygiene) and, as most of you who know me can guess, even a trip (or two) to Mr. Disney’s World and Land. (Hey, RWA is being held in Anaheim right across the street from D’land — how can I fight that? LOL)

And one of the best things I’ll be doing is meeting readers throughout the year at signings, chats and through blogs as well as during speaking engagements from Scottsdale AZ to the Pearl Buck House in PA. I hope to see you at one of them!

One of the fun things is looking ahead to all the wonderful romances to be read this year — my favorite authors have bunches of books on their way for me….and you! I’ll be having a couple of books out from Harlequin Historicals (or their UK counterpart-Mills&Boon) and two more of my time travels to re-release. But more on those later!

So, as you look towards 2012, what are your plans, expectations and hopes? Any books you’re waiting for? Anything that will make 2012 special? Do you plan to hit the New Year running or slip gently into it? Please post a note and I’ll choose one to receive a signed book and one of the last of my 2011 wee Disney gifties……….

“Is it time yet? Is it, is it time yet?”

Those words from last year’s holiday hit “Toy Jackpot” sum up the excitement of the next 10 days, don’t they? I remember the way my kids would whisper those words throughout the days leading up to that wonderful moment on Christmas morning when they would charge down the steps to see what Santa had left them under the tree.

And then those minutes of wrapping paper hysteria and screams of joy, empty boxes and packages flying all over were followed by hours of trying out all the new games, toys, Legos, racing cars, or whichever was the toy-of-the-year present. The anticipation of the days and weeks before melted away in such a short time.

So, here we are, in that time of build-up and preparation when our hopes are high and our wish-lists are still growing. There’s still a chance that the one thing we want the most will show up on that magical morning under the tree. Or that the one person we most want to see at this special time of year will return home or visit.

What am I looking forward to? Well, I’m still trying to pull off a few Christmas surprises. I’m very good at “Christmas lying” – which is the only time I condone lying — and have managed to surprise my family with various presents that were in short-supply or hard-to-arrange. My habit began years ago during the Cabbage Patch kids phenomenon and continued until the last few years and I’ve arranged a secret Christmas cruise and found a Wii when no one had them. (That Wii involved LOTS of Christmas lies, but my son forgave me for those when he opened his present!)

My most enjoyable moment on Christmas is just having my kids home, opening presents and eating a BIG breakfast that includes a couple of their favorite foods and hot tea. Sounds simple but it usually is the simple things that bring joy.

And how about you? What are you looking forward to on Christmas? Any favorite family traditions or gatherings? Or something new? Do you use an Advent calendar? Do you have a favorite meal? Post and let me what builds your level of anticipation!

Terri is taking part in the Harlequin Historical Authors’ Holiday calendar and will be featured author on Thursday, December 15th — but anyone reading this can enter a bit earlier than everyone else using this link! And Terri is thrilled that the first two books in her MacKendimen Clan trilogy are now available in digital formats – A LOVE THROUGH TIME and ONCE FORBIDDEN can be found on the major online booksellers.

As many of you who follow this blog or read mine during this time of year, November is a very strange month for me — filled with the very best AND worst of things.

The bad things? My dad died on Thanksgiving in 1976. I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in November. I broke my back (for the second time!) in November. The good things? My third son was born in November. My first book was published in November. I was cured of cancer in November.

It’s a real up-and-down time of year for me. But, with Thanksgiving right in the middle of it, I do find myself trying to focus on the good things and to take time to be thankful for them. And this year is no different so I thought I’d share a couple of them with you:

1) I’m thankful for my health — I just hit my five-year-cancer-free date so WOOOOHOOOO!

2) I’m thankful for all those writers who continue to inspire me and whose work keeps me happily reading for hours and hours.

3) I’m thankful for my writing colleagues who cheer me on when I need it, support me when I’m down and point me in different directions when I need to turn or move. I’m thankful for their creativity and their constant friendship.

4) I’m thankful that I’ve had the chance to share my stories and my characters with readers.

5) I’m thankful for my readers who give me their time and attention and let me know how my stories have affected them.

and 6) I’m thankful that I found the Jaunty Quills, or that they found me, and invited me to be part of this wonderful community!

As you gather with family or friends this week to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, what will you be thankful for? Share it with me. . . .

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

When my first book came out, well, even before that–probably when I began my journey into the world of writing and publishing, I had an idea of what REAL authors did in their lives. I’m sure it’s close to what anyone outside the world of publishing thinks….

The glamorous author rises in the morning to a freshly-steeped cup of tea and fresh croissant, made by her cook, and takes a few hours to read her piles of fan letters (hey, this was before everyone did email!), freshen her appearance into something glamorous, sort through her personal things and then she would approach her typewriter, word processor, secretary, etc. to begin creating the wonderful stories she writes.

An hour or so later, she would break for lunch (something glamorous made by her cook – and cleaned up by the housekeeper/maid/someone other than herself) before returning calls to her publicist, hardworking agent and her adoring publisher. In the afternoon, she would go shopping, to the spa, hair/nail stylist, work with her personal trainer, etc. before returning to write a bit more before calling it a day–creatively speaking.

In the evening, a car would arrive and whisk her off to some glamorous dinner before she attended a sumptuous event or theater or signing attended by throngs of adoring fans who would clamor for her autograph. After that, she would be driven home (which had been cleaned by someone else) and go to bed, resting after such an exhausting day. . . .

Are you laughing yet? Yeah, I believed in the fairytale and thought that every author with published books MUST live that way. . . and I kind of wanted it, too.

And then my first book was published and I learned the truth — especially about women authors — very, very, very few of us ever live that glamorous life! Instead, we do what most all women do — we ADD writing and being published into our already-full lives. We ADD the hours at the keyboard, the hours of self-promotion, the hours of editing and revising, the hours of researching and all of it into schedules filled with outside-or-inside-the-house jobs, family, husbands, partners, children, extend family obligations, other commitments and on and on.

We multi-task endlessly. Each day is far from glamorous.

BUT. . .

I wouldn’t change it for the world!

And every so often, I get to do something that definitely was part of my idea of glamorous-author-life. Like going on a Levy bus tour of New England and having people arrange everything. Or signing at BEA (Book Expo America in NYC). Or being interviewed for a newspaper or magazine article. Or meeting fans — maybe not throngs but each one is great!

Or, like coming to the Isle of Palms, staying in a sumptuous beach house and surrounding myself with writers doing writerly stuff.

No one to take care of — other than myself. No one to ask me to run to the store. . . or do laundry. . . or make copies. . . or anything. I may not have the personal assistant yet. . . or the private secretary or cook, but sitting here, watching the sun move across the sky and the waves roll gently onto shore, I can pretend those things! LOL!

Of course, the biggest thrill for an author is seeing her books on sale and I guess I’ve been thinking back to that first book — A LOVE THROUGH TIME — which was released THIS WEEK in 1998. Coincidentally, I’ve republished it in digital formats just this past week! So now, 13 years later, it’s available to a new audience of readers — something every author dreams about.

So, what’s the one thing you would do if you were living the glamorous life? what would be your guilty pleasure — if you could afford it? Travel? Help around the house? Weekly massages? Add a comment here and I’ll pick out someone to receive something special…!

I attended the New Jersey Romance Writers Conference last weekend and had a wonderful time. Inevitably, published authors chat about what’s going on in the publishing industry and talk comes around to effective methods of promoting ourselves and our work/books to readers and potential readers (AKA you!). Over the last couple of years social media like Facebook and Twitter have been increasingly growing and authors are being told to be there and to have a presence so that we can meet and ‘friend’ readers, fans and potential readers. Some publishers even give tutorials about how to use these social media for those authors among us who just are not comfortable being in the public eye and at interacting with the public at the fast pace of the internet.

Interestingly, a tidbit of information shared in one of the discussions was that social media and an author’s presence there does not bring about sales of books.

Apparently, posting and following and tweeting doesn’t seem to sell books or cause readers to run out and buy them — for other than the very biggest of the big-name authors. The rest of us get lost in the mix. Although readers like to chat with us on FB and Twitter, and follow us through our days and share our posts and photos with others of their friends, they don’t go out and buy our books due to seeing us there.

As a reader and a fan, it was interesting to me. I do follow some of my favorite authors, but those are authors whose books are already on my auto-buy list. I don’t read anything on FB that makes me buy those authors, I follow them because I already enjoy them and their work. But surely, not all readers do this too? LOL!

So……that brings me to my question of the day — do you follow authors you already enjoy or do you begin to try new authors through their FB or Twitter postings? Do an author’s posts make you try out their work? Or are the authors you follow your auto-buys? Let me know what you think and I’ll pick two posters and give them each a $10 giftcard to Amazon or iTunes for sharing!
