Just a quick true story about contests.

My DH is the youngest in a large Iowa farming family. He has 7 brothers and sisters! When he was a little boy, his oldest sister wanted to play clarinet in the high school band. Unfortunately, his family was not well-heeled enough to be  able to fork over the money to buy an instrument for her. However, his mom and dad had been putting a few dollars aside to buy a new washer and dryer. Think about this for a moment. With 8 kids, his mother was still using a wringer washer and hanging clothes to dry, either outside on the line in summer or in the basement in the cold Iowa winter. But this good-hearted couple decided to put the washer and dryer on hold and use the money they’d saved to buy a clarinet for their oldest child.

Fast forward a few months. My future father-in-law entered a fill-in-the-blank contest with one of the merchants in town. And he WON the grand prize.

“What was it?” I hear you asking.

A brand new washer and dryer!

Reaping and sowing, karma, whatever you want to call it. It really is hard-wired into the fabric of the universe, isn’t it?

Do you have a contest story to share? Have you ever won anything?

I’ve won books, several times from this blog, and I have met a lot of new authors that way. So, thanks to all you lovely writers!

If I bought all but one lottery ticket,in a drawing, that one I did not buy would win. I was working in another state and one day I went to a small store to buy coffee for several of us. At the same time, I bought 20 scratch off tickets, one for everyone. I have such bad luck that not one of those 20 tickets – not one single person – won anything.

But, every now and then I win a book from different sites and that is as wonderful to me as though I won the lottery. I have a book addiction, so I am always thrilled to win something of a fix for my addiction.

I have been very lucky! Just last night I won 2 books from Vanessa in a FB party! And the grand prize of a Kindle, loaded w/ ebooks. I am still on a high! I also have a full set of signed books from Kristan that I have won in contests. I am so grateful for the generosity and kindness of romance authors!

My F-I-L was pretty lucky and won little things often, but the W & D was the biggest prize he ever won.

One reason I continue with Facebook is because of the author contests. I have been lucky enough to win plenty. One thing often required in these contests is to ”share” the post. My sweet wonderful Pops started sharing my posts after I shared. He was so sweet. No matter what, he would share or comment. When I told him he didn’t have to do that, he said he wanted to win me a book. Oh he was a sweet guy! After many many many times, he won. He was so excited. He got hold of me to find out what to do about it. He wasn’t sure. haha So, a couple weeks later, he gets a pkg. Dad was sooo excited. He opened it and to his great disappointment, there was no book. There were some book marks and other things and a mug. Which really was fine. My dad drank tea every morning with his breakfast. And he used that mug. But he had mom take a picture of him with his winnings. haha He has a scowl on his face and it makes me laugh every time I see that picture. Some time later, my wonderful Pops passed away. When I was there, mom kept asking if there was anything of his that I wanted? I could not think of much. When we were in Italy, we bought him a rosary at the Vatican. So mom made sure I got that. But really there, wasn’t anything else.
As I was helping with the dishes, I saw that mug in the cabinet. haha That silly mug. I took it home. It lives on my treasured book shelves. I smile every time I see it.
I wonder how often things like this happen and the author cant really know how much that book or mug or whatever means to the fan??
