This blog originally appeared in January. 2013. I’ve updated it at the end…

RELAX: NO SPOILERS IN THIS BLOG :-)

On Sunday, January 6, season 3 of Downton Abbey premiered in the U.S. Many of you, like me, have been waiting months and months for it to resume. We’ve had to carefully avoid any spoilers from over the pond, where it was already showing, and we had to watch the first and second seasons again in preparation.

Some of you are wondering what all the fuss is about. That’s easy.

1. The Clothes

Lady Mary, Lady Edith, and Lady Sybil wear fabulous clothes.

2. The on-again-off-again love affair between Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley is riveting and often surprising. It doesn’t hurt that Dan Stevens, who plays our hero, is easy on the eyes.

3. The conflicts dealing with the servants below stairs are just as fascinating as those dealing with the gentry. In fact, sometimes they’re even more interesting.  Love, hate, money, scandal, treachery, murder…that’s what makes Downton Abbey so popular.

Are you watching Downton Abbey? If not, why not? If so, what do you like about it? Warn us if you include any spoliers!

UPDATE:

It breaks my heart to read that blog. Little did I know what awaited our dear Crawley family. So much tragedy. Guess what? Downton is starting again in September. September? What? Yes, it’s playing in the UK. Want to watch it when the Brits do? I found this information on how to watch Season 3 using Tunnel Bear. It’s only $4.99/month. Here’s the link with the info for Season 3. I’ll be watching Tunnel Bear for season 4.

How to Watch Downton Abbey Season 4

Are you looking forward to the new season of Downton or have you given up on the show? One person who comments will win a copy of my upcoming book TRUE SPIES, which releases September 3.truespiesapproved-300

  1. librarypat@comcast.net says:

I saw a few episodes the first season and liked it. However, it conflicted with what other family members wanted to watch. It is just the type of program I enjoy. I need to find a way to watch the previous shows and catch up with this season. A second TV would help.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Librarypat, you definitely need a second TV. My husband and I have always had two because no one but him can watch that much sports.

    2. CateS says:

Our local PBS station is running a promotion that gets you Seasons 1-3 at a donation level.. Usually, during the broadcast season, you can watch the episodes on a computer by accessing PBS.

      1. Shana Shana says:

I saw that, Cate! Very tempting since I like to donate to PBS anyway.

  2. Susan says:

Love Downton. The time period 1912-1920′s was a time of change throughout the world. The clothes & jewelry & scenery are fabulous. I love the Lady Mary & Mathew & Anna & Bates storylines. Maggie Smith’s Violet is a hoot–my husband enjoys her commentary. I am glad that Lady Sybil and Tom have returned…and am curious about Lady Edith’s wedding the weekend.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I’m curious about Lady Edith’s wedding, too, Susan. I’m also curious about the marriage. She really pushed for it. Will she be happy?

  3. Loved it from the first show. It is a soap opera in a castle with great clothes! Yum!

  4. Lorelei says:

I haven’t been able to watch it yet, I prefer reading books, but I have decided to give it a try! It seems I’m missing out on a great series! Will let you know ;). Thanks for the chance to win a copy of IYGARAR!

    1. Shana Shana says:

You’re welcome, Lorelei. Let us know what you think.

  5. Linda says:

No, I’m afraid I don’t watch it but that’s because I rarely watch anything on tv other than the news & sports (tennis!). My dad doesn’t let anyone else take over the tv remote!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Linda, my dad was the same way. My husband is a bit possessive too. You have to get your dad watching it!

  6. Stefanie D says:

No, I don’t watch it. I prefer reading books to watching television.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I do, too, Stefanie, but Downton is pretty good.

  7. Kaye Whitney says:

I started to watch Downton Abbey after many authors commented about it. I like it because of the elegant ambiance and reserved nature of the characters.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Kaye, I agree. It’s almost more about what they don’t say.

  8. Turophile says:

Just watched it the first time last week. Enjoyed the acting, the drama. Plan to watch more.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Great! I hope you like it, Turophile.

  9. Sophie Grant says:

My hubby gets into the show even more than me! He loves the edginess of it and is intrigued with the way they lived back then. He wouldn’t have been interested years ago but because I always rattle on about the Regency period, he can’t help but become intrigued with it all. Season 3 hasn’t started in Australia yet, very soon though!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Sophie, Ultimate Sportsfan likes it too. I don’t think he likes it more than me, but he doesn’t want to miss it!

  10. Callie Cuddy says:

 Actually, until you mentioned it on Facebook, I had never heard of Downtown Abbey, sad to say, i don’t watch it. I barely can keep up with the shows i do watch, so that would be half the reason i haven’t added any new shows, but i will give it a look in the future.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I started watching it late, too, Callie. I don’t watch much TV, but this show is fun!

  11. Karen H in NC says:

I’ve watched the program from day one and won’t miss a single episode. Season 3 is stacking up to be maybe the best season yet. Love the costumes. Love the characters, both upstairs and downstairs. Love the abbey and the cars! Can you tell I’m a fan? FREE MR. BATES!

Oh, and thanks for the giveaway!

  12. Aly P says:

I am behind, I have to see seasons 2 and 3, but I read spoilers so I know what happens… heartbreaking.

I can’t wait to read your book!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thanks, Aly! I love how you can get the complete seasons of shows now and catch up.

  13. Ada says:

I’m one of the few that have never seen an episode. I know! For whatever reason, I’ve just never felt the need to watch even after everyone tells me how good it is. I end up watching stupid reality show crap instead

    1. Shana Shana says:

Ada, it’s definitely addictive. You’ll start watching and won’t be able to stop.

  14. Lorelei B. says:

I’ve only had the opportunity to watch the first episode. I hope I can get the DVD set somewhere and try to catch up ;)

    1. Shana Shana says:

You can also watch it online. I think it’s free if you have Amazon prime. Thanks, Lorelei.

  15. Lorelei B. says:

Oops! I meant the first season ;-)

  16. Laurie G says:

TV antennae broke in a storm last year and we haven’t replaced it. I’m not missing TV. I’d rather read.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I’m the same, Laurie. This is about the only show I watch.

  17. Angie Frawley says:

Can’t wait!!! Even the hubby watches with me..shhhh!! Don’t tell him I told! LOL

    1. Shana Shana says:

Angie, Ultimate Sportsfan watches it with me.

  18. Rochelle says:

Absolutely adore the show. It’s like costume porn, no?

    1. Shana Shana says:

      Rochelle, great analogy!

  19. Tracey Galbraith says:

Well, my daughter guilted me into watching Downton Abbey this Summer. She said “C’mon Mom, I know you’ll love it, just like those books you read!” (HUH?). She knows me very well! We watched the first and second season, and started the third. Of course I loved it and am looking forward to see what happens next!! Also, I love the meme with Ryan Gosling, my daughter loves him, she’ll appreciate it too!

    1. Shana Shana says:

We owe that lovely meme to Kristan, Tracey. So glad you have it a try!

  20. Katie L says:

I don’t even know what channel (US) I should be looking at for it yet! I assume it is on HBO or some such channel that I don’t have…I should watch it but I’m just too tired to do anything but read when my kids finally go to sleep. It is too hard to choose between shows and books so I have a very small amount of shows that I keep up with right now. I’ll buy the seasons when they go to school finally. LOL

    1. Shana Shana says:

Katie, it’s on PBS. No subscription required! I do hear you about wanting to read more than watch TV.

  21. I’m behind, too…but love the thought that Tunnel Bear exists! Will definitely make use of that when the time comes!

    1. Shana Shana says:

I have to thank Joanne from Twitter for telling me about it. She lets me know about all the deals at Starbucks too.

  22. Anne says:

I have watched the series since if started and enjoy it greatly. this is the only program that I watch and I miss it.

    1. Shana Shana says:

The season seems way too short, Anne.

  23. I can’t wait for the new season! So glad to know about this service that will allow us to watch it early. II will probably partake.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Good, Nancy! We can keep up with Kathy!

  24. Rhonda Kirby says:

I have, so far, only seen a couple of episodes of the series. I have ordered the seasons and plan to catch up on the entire show in the near future.

I really enjoy your books and look forward to reading True Spies.

    Thanks
    Rhonda Kirby

    1. Shana Shana says:

      Thank you so much, Rhonda!

  25. Serenissima says:

I am so waiting for the fourth season of Downton Abbey! In Finland they are going to show it later this year. We don´t know the dates yet. I am hoping for September/October; the sooner the better.

    1. Shana Shana says:

So it’s popular in Finland too? If won’t be on in the US until January.

  26. eap says:

I’ll still watch but since I don’t have cable (and trying to pay off some bills) will get it when it comes out from the public library when it comes out on DVD.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Isn’t it cool how the library has so many resources available now?

  27. Kathleen OD says:

I am so looking forward to the new season of this show.. I watched the first 2 season on DVD and then caught season 3 on TV.. I can PVR it so I never miss an episode.. And it will be so heartbreaking to watch that first episode..

    1. Shana Shana says:

Kathleen, the first episode will be tough, but I have seen some hints about the new season, and it will be fun too.

  28. Diane P. Diamond says:

I absolutely ADORE Downton Abbey. I can’t wait for the next season to start, and watch Lady Mary’s onward journey from the loss of Matthew. I’m absolutely gutted that they killed him off.

Thank you for this chance to win Shana’s book, “True Spies”. I’ve been waiting FOREVER for this to be released. ;-)

    1. Shana Shana says:

Me, too, Diane! I’m excited about both the book and the series.

  29. Kathryn in Montreal says:

Loved Downton Abbey right from the start, can’t wait for the season to start…and, yes, THE CLOTHES…love the costuming for this show! Looking forward to seeing True Spies in print!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thanks, Kathryn. I can’t wait to see the new outfits. Jazz age!

  30. catslady says:

Sorry to say I’ve never watched this show!

    1. Shana Shana says:

      You should, catslady!

  31. bn100 says:

    Don’t really watch it

    1. Shana Shana says:

And I haven’t convinced you to start?

  32. Barbara Elness says:

I missed out on Downton Abbey when it first started, and by the time I find out about it I felt like it was too late to catch up. Maybe one of these days I’ll do a marathon because it does sound pretty cool. :D

    1. Shana Shana says:

You should, Barbara. The seasons aren’t even very long. You could watch the whole series in a weekend.

  33. Marcy Shuler says:

Last year was the first time I watched Downton Abbey and I fell in love with it. I then had to get the previous seasons on DVD from PBS. LOL Now I have to watch them before it returns to the US.

    1. Shana Shana says:

You have time, Marcy. It won’t be back until January.

  34. Anita H. says:

I never really caught onto the show, maybe I’ll eventually end up watching a marathon of the show on DVD. I’m more of a reader than a tv person.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I am, too, Anita, but it’s such fabulous historical drama.

  35. LSUReader says:

I don’t watch much TV, and even though I’ve heard it’s wonderful, I don’t watch Downton Abbey. I will, however, be reading True Spies! Thanks for the post and giveaway.

    1. Shana Shana says:

LSUReader, it’s my opinion that if one has to choose between TV or reading, choose reading. I always do, but I never have enough reading time, it seems.

  36. minesha says:

This show sounds good ! I haven’t watched it yet but I think I will. I love historicals! :) Can’t wait to read true spies!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thanks, minesha. If you enjoy historicals, I think you’d like the show.

  37. Xoun J. says:

Heard so much about this show, but I don’t watch T.V. Sounds interesting though. Congrats on the upcoming release of True Spies! Sept. 3rd is actually my birthday! :) So many books releasing on that same day. I feel special. *giggles*

    1. Shana Shana says:

Isn’t it fun when a birthday falls on a Tuesday that’s a big release day? :-)

  38. Ann s. says:

I LOVE Downton Abbey. My best friend loaned me season1 on DVD and I was hooked. Now do I TiVo Downton Abbey so I can read True Spies? Too much to do on September 3rd.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Does the new season start September 3? By all means, TiVo Downton to read first!

  39. Kirsten says:

I greatly enjoyed Downton but gave up watching during the second season. The costumes are awesome and I do still like it… Sadly it started to feel a bit too much of the same for me. Perhaps I over did it by watching three episodes in a row & then watching them a second time as the next season wasn’t available yet? ;) Also would have liked Mathew more if he had dark hair and chocolate eyes…

    1. Shana Shana says:

I do think the show can err on the side of melodrama, Kirsten. A little goes a long way, what with all the deaths and injuries and babies/no babies.
