I’m sure like most of you, there are certain songs that you tie into certain events or ones that evoke certain emotions every time you hear them on the radio.
For a long time Amazing Grace was one of those songs for me. My mother loved it and had it played at her funeral. It still brings bittersweet memories when I hear it. I think that’s why I prefer to hear the new renditions, rather than the old traditional version.
What’s crazy is that another song, My Heart Will Go On (aka theme from Titanic), also reminds me of my mother’s passing. Perhaps it’s the lyrics:
Wherever you are
I believe that
The heart does go on
You open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
Songs can also evoke a certain emotion from me when I’m writing. I recently had that experience while writing the first draft of a book that will be out next year. I was driving in my car and an old song from Reba played on the radio. It was “I Know How He Feels.” It was the combination music and lyrics that touched me. It was exactly how I thought my heroine, Mitzi, would feel when she pushed Keenan (the hero) away during the black moment.
Again, I think the lyrics (coupled with the music) are what spoke to me:
I know how he feels
How warm his touch is
Oh, how he feels
How soft his kiss is
And it cuts right down to the bone
‘Cause I let him go
I’m wondering if you have certain songs that evoke positive (or negative) emotion in you. If you’re willing to share, I’d appreciate it!
