Shana Galen, The Jaunty Interview

Hello! It’s me, Jaunty P. Quills, Porcupine Extraordinaire. I’m here with a stash of pine nuts and my latest author interview. Welcome to the Jaunty Quills Shana Galen!

jaunty

Shana: Jaunty, this is my blog.

Jaunty: So tell us about your new book, If You Give a Porcupine a Pine Nut.

Shana: Jaunty, you know that’s not the title. It’s If You Give a Rake a Ruby.

Jaunty: That makes no sense. Why would a yard implement want a ruby? You can’t eat rubies. Can you?

Shana: Jaunty, the book is about a courtesan and a spy. Fallon is the Marchioness of Mystery, and she wants to keep her past a mystery. Warrick is under threat of assassination, and Fallon holds the key to finding the hired assassin. She and Warrick meet when she finds him in her bed. She kicks him out, but he blackmails her into helping him.

Jaunty: And then they find the hidden pine nut treasure?

Shana: No. Then they have to delve into London’s underworld.

Jaunty: And that’s where the pine nuts are!

Shana: No. There aren’t any pine nuts in this book. Just rubies.

Jaunty: And the rubies taste like pine nuts!

Shana: No, Jaunty. There are no pine nuts and no porcupines in this book.

Jaunty: Shana, you know Kristan is my favorite, right? Are you even trying to compete?

Shana: No.

Jaunty: I don’t believe you. I’ve seen the cover of your book.

Shana: And?

Jaunty: There’s a porcupine on the cover! Thank you, Shana!

Shana: No problem, Jaunty. Readers, I have no idea what Jaunty is talking about, but as a thanks for reading this interview, I’m giving one person who comments a copy of If You Give a Rake a Ruby. Let me know your favorite color on the cover of romance novels.

  1. Barbara Elness says:

It’s so hard to choose, I love bright, vibrant colors, like the red in If You Give A Rake a Ruby. I think my very favorite though is a brilliant blue cover, it always catches my eye.

    1. Shana Shana says:

That’s Baby Galen’s favorite too, Barbara. She always calls THE ROGUE PIRATE’S BRIDE her book.

  2. Stefanie D says:

I would also go for a bright blue. According to me blue can put a lot of different feelings in a cover: dark and dangerous, mysterious, vibrant and lively, etc.

    1. Shana Shana says:

That’s a good point, Stefanie. Color can evoke a lot of feelings and moods.

  3. Laurie G says:

Normally blue is my favorite color. However , recently I love the bright yellow/gold covers like your last one. They’re bright, cheery, eye catching yet a bit different. Look at all of the fabulous books to the right only two are yellow/ Gold. I notice them! Next would be red. Very striking! You have two winners Shana!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Laurie, I didn’t think of that. Sometimes being different is good, right?

  4. Sandi in OH says:

I like blue but I think your red cover is great. You wouldn’t want every cover to be the same color unless you one series of books from another. BTW I checked out the cover very closely and saw no porcupine. Maybe Jaunty needs glasses?

    1. Shana Shana says:

Sandi, I think that was wishful thinking of Janty’s part. And you’re right. The covers in a series have to look different or readers think they’ve read the new book already.

  5. Jo's Daughter says:

I have a lot of different colors on the covers of my books. Many are pink, blue and purple. Few green and no grey or black. I like red and white but don’t normally pick my books by color or store them by color :)

    1. Shana Shana says:

Jo’s Daughter, my editor tells me green is the kiss of death. I always like green, if it’s a jewel green.

  6. I’m your favorite, Jaunty? Since when? You’re so fickle! As for Shana’s question, I never really thought about it! Can’t go wrong with red, though.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Kristan, I think he’s playing us against one another

  7. Kathleen OD says:

I love when it has a rich purple colour.. My fav colour…. But your covers are always great.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thanks, Kathleen. Purple is my favorite color. I envy Mia for her cover of A TOUCH OF SCANDAL.

  8. Kathryn in Montreal says:

Your red cover is gorgeous… but my favourite colour is purple… and there seem to be a lot of books with blue covers out there.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Kathryn, I haven’t really had a purple cover. I would love one.

  9. Margo Maguire says:

No single color grabs me – it’s the design (clinch, scenery, whatever) that catches my eye.

    1. Shana Shana says:

It’s kind of the same with me, Margo. I am usually drawn to a cover with a gorgeous dress, like Jillian Hunter’s or Alexandra Hawkins’s new release.

  10. Melody May says:

Shana I love red covers. It’s like a bug to a light. So, it a book has a red cover its like ooh pretty.

    That Jaunty is too much.

    1. Shana Shana says:

I like the bug to light comparison, Melody. I can just imagine readers lured to those red covered books!

  11. Deanna says:

 I like most colors, but since we are approaching St. Patrick’s Day…I will say Green. Dee

    1. Shana Shana says:

If you have a book with a green cover on St. Pat’s Day, you won’t get pinched! Smart, Dee. Very smart.

  12. Ann s. says:

My favorite color is pink and I do get excited when I see a beautiful cover. I also love to see a beautiful chest, I mean dress on the cover. Sorry, a little Freudian slip, lol.

    1. Shana Shana says:

LOL, Ann! I loved my LORD AND LADY SPY pink cover. I didn’t think I was a pink fan, but maybe I can be persuaded.

  13. melissa cahall says:

    i like pinks and reds

    1. Shana Shana says:

Melissa, those colors make me think of sunsets. What could be more romantic?

    1. Shana Shana says:

Then I have a book for you, eap!

  14. Brinda says:

My daughter (3) always takes my Wuthering Heights and Romeo and Juliet because they have purple covers. I don’t generally have a color preference for books.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Brinda, maybe you can cover a few other classics in purple and she’ll read those too!

  15. Joy G says:

I really don’t have a color preference, I am drawn more by the view/scene than the color.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Joy, what kind of scenes do you like? I like beautiful dresses or covers that seem to tell a story or make me want to know more.

  16. Shanah says:

Hi there! Red is my current favorite color for everything. I like earth tones in book covers. And your ruby red cover is perfect. Blues and purples are my other faves. It’s so hard to choose just one.
I laughed so hard over the porcupine’s interview. I am still trying to figure it out, but anything with a porcupine is good in my eyes!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Shanah, Jaunty is a very egotistical porcupine. He thinks everything is about him. he’s sort of our mascot (which means, we can’t get rid of him).

  17. Rebe says:

I’m not sure I have a preference for a particular color, either, although blue is my favorite color.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Blue is my daughter’s favorite color too, Rebe, and when she sees something blue, she wants it.

  18. Quilt Lady says:

I think red really makes a book stand out. I also like bright blues and bright green, but red is my favorite. Your book cover is beautiful! Great interview!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thank you, Quilt Lady. It’s not easy to get through an interview with Jaunty.

  19. Tuesday Carlson says:

I love a bright vibrant purple/wine splash of color on a cover but really any bright vibrant colors look great on book covers! Great interview and I can’t wait to read the new book!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Tuesday, I like vibrant colors too. For awhile it seemed muted colors were popular, and those covers never appealed to me as much.

  20. Betty Hamilton says:

I have loved your books and look forward to this one as well!!

    1. Shana Shana says:

      Thank you, Betty!

  21. catslady says:

I like most bright covers so red and yellow are two of my favorites.

    1. Shana Shana says:

Kate Noble has a book with a girl in a yellow dress on the cover, catslady, and it always draws my eye. Yellow can really be eye-catching.

  22. donna ann says:

no favorite color (for books) though your cover is quite lovely :) cograts on the new release (& surviving Jaunty again) ;)

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thank you, Donna Ann! No one tell him when my next book comes out. Maybe I’ll scoot by.

  23. bn100 says:

    don’t have a preference

    1. Shana Shana says:

Sounds like you just like to read, BN100

  24. Molly says:

I like jewel tones like ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, amethyst purple. :D

    1. Shana Shana says:

Molly, I love jewel tones, too. I think the vibrant colors are the ones that really pop.

  25. Olga says:

    My favorite color is red.

    1. Shana Shana says:

It definitely evokes passion and strength, Olga.

  26. may says:

Love the first book! Thought it was terrific and very touching how Juliet found herself…

    I like red…

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thank you, May! I hope you like Fallon’s book too.

  27. Patti S. says:

Well let me start by saying I loved the color of both books in the Jewels of the Ton series so far. But, my favorite color would have to be blue. Something about that color just draws me right in!

    1. Shana Shana says:

Thanks, Patti! I have to say, the cover for Rogue Pirate’s Bride always makes me smile.

  28. LilMissMolly says:

I think deep purples and blues are the most breathtaking colors on covers.

    1. Shana Shana says:

LilMissMolly, still waiting for the deep purple cover.

  29. Chelsea B. says:

Hmmm. I don’t know. I’ve never thought about it before. I’m going to say purple, because it’s my favorite color, and sure to catch my eye

  30. Linda says:

I don’t have a preference for a color; neither do I like a cover which is predominantly a single color. I prefer something which has a pleasing combination of colors which features both characters.
