If You Give a Porcupine a Pine Nut

Hello! It’s me, Jaunty P. Quills, Porcupine Extraordinaire. I’m here with a stash of pine nuts and my latest author interview. Welcome to the Jaunty Quills Shana Galen!

jaunty

Shana: Jaunty, this is my blog.

Jaunty: So tell us about your new book, If You Give a Porcupine a Pine Nut.

Shana: Jaunty, you know that’s not the title. It’s If You Give a Rake a Ruby.

Jaunty: That makes no sense. Why would a yard implement want a ruby? You can’t eat rubies. Can you?

Shana: Jaunty, the book is about a courtesan and a spy. Fallon is the Marchioness of Mystery, and she wants to keep her past a mystery. Warrick is under threat of assassination, and Fallon holds the key to finding the hired assassin. She and Warrick meet when she finds him in her bed. She kicks him out, but he blackmails her into helping him.

Jaunty: And then they find the hidden pine nut treasure?

Shana: No. Then they have to delve into London’s underworld.

Jaunty: And that’s where the pine nuts are!

Shana: No. There aren’t any pine nuts in this book. Just rubies.

Jaunty: And the rubies taste like pine nuts!

Shana: No, Jaunty. There are no pine nuts and no porcupines in this book.

Jaunty: Shana, you know Kristan is my favorite, right? Are you even trying to compete?

Shana: No.

Jaunty: I don’t believe you. I’ve seen the cover of your book.

Shana: And?

Jaunty: There’s a porcupine on the cover! Thank you, Shana!

Shana: No problem, Jaunty. Readers, I have no idea what Jaunty is talking about, but as a thanks for reading this interview, I’m giving one person who comments a copy of If You Give a Rake a Ruby. Let me know your favorite color on the cover of romance novels.

It’s so hard to choose, I love bright, vibrant colors, like the red in If You Give A Rake a Ruby. I think my very favorite though is a brilliant blue cover, it always catches my eye.

That’s Baby Galen’s favorite too, Barbara. She always calls THE ROGUE PIRATE’S BRIDE her book.

I would also go for a bright blue. According to me blue can put a lot of different feelings in a cover: dark and dangerous, mysterious, vibrant and lively, etc.

    • Shana Said:

That’s a good point, Stefanie. Color can evoke a lot of feelings and moods.

Normally blue is my favorite color. However , recently I love the bright yellow/gold covers like your last one. They’re bright, cheery, eye catching yet a bit different. Look at all of the fabulous books to the right only two are yellow/ Gold. I notice them! Next would be red. Very striking! You have two winners Shana!

    • Shana Said:

Laurie, I didn’t think of that. Sometimes being different is good, right?

  4. Sandi in OH Said:

I like blue but I think your red cover is great. You wouldn’t want every cover to be the same color unless you one series of books from another. BTW I checked out the cover very closely and saw no porcupine. Maybe Jaunty needs glasses?

    • Shana Said:

Sandi, I think that was wishful thinking of Janty’s part. And you’re right. The covers in a series have to look different or readers think they’ve read the new book already.

I have a lot of different colors on the covers of my books. Many are pink, blue and purple. Few green and no grey or black. I like red and white but don’t normally pick my books by color or store them by color :)

Jo’s Daughter, my editor tells me green is the kiss of death. I always like green, if it’s a jewel green.

I’m your favorite, Jaunty? Since when? You’re so fickle! As for Shana’s question, I never really thought about it! Can’t go wrong with red, though.

Your red cover is gorgeous… but my favourite colour is purple… and there seem to be a lot of books with blue covers out there.

Kathryn, I haven’t really had a purple cover. I would love one.

No single color grabs me – it’s the design (clinch, scenery, whatever) that catches my eye.

    • Shana Said:

It’s kind of the same with me, Margo. I am usually drawn to a cover with a gorgeous dress, like Jillian Hunter’s or Alexandra Hawkins’s new release.

Hi there! Red is my current favorite color for everything. I like earth tones in book covers. And your ruby red cover is perfect. Blues and purples are my other faves. It’s so hard to choose just one.
I laughed so hard over the porcupine’s interview. I am still trying to figure it out, but anything with a porcupine is good in my eyes!

    • Shana Said:

Shanah, Jaunty is a very egotistical porcupine. He thinks everything is about him. he’s sort of our mascot (which means, we can’t get rid of him).

I don’t have a preference for a color; neither do I like a cover which is predominantly a single color. I prefer something which has a pleasing combination of colors which features both characters.
