I can’t tell you how many times my husband and I watch a movie and afterwards, I’ll say that the movie was great, but the lead guy – or some other main character – was completely miscast.
I’ll give you a couple of examples, then I want you to tell me yours.
Viggo Mortensen in the Lord of the Rings. I especially didn’t like him in The Return of the King. I thought he looked silly, prancing around in that crown. Now, I know I’m typing sacrilege, but that’s just how I feel. I didn’t like him as
Strider, and I thought he was a scraggly, over-acting mess as Aragorn.
Adrian Lukis as Mr. Wickham in the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice. Come on. This is a guy who has every young girl’s heart pattering in her breast. This actor would have been a better Mr. Collins (although I thought they cast Mr. Collins perfectly). I preferred the Mr.
Wickham in the Kiera Knightly version. At least this one might cause palpitations in the Bennett sisters.
Kathryn Heigl as Stephanie Plum in One for the Money. The movie was a disappointment – sometimes favorite books just shouldn’t be put into movie form, you know? I could SO see Kristen Wiig as Stephanie. Or somebody else with a better comic edge. I did like the actor who played Joe Morelli – an Irishman, in fact. I thought he was perfect as Joe.
Justin Timberlake in In Time. I guess his acting was ok – but his voice. It just wasn’t
commanding the way a leading man’s should be. It sounded a bit wimpy. I would have liked someone like Chris Pine in that role.
I’m going to go out on another limb here and tell you that I’m not crazy about Toby Stevens as Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. But Michael Fassbender worked perfectly for me – in the most recent version. And though I love Alan Rickman, I thought he was too old to play Colonel Branden in Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson/Hugh Grant version). Sure, Branden should be older – but 35, not 45!
What do you think? Am I completely off base here? What characters do you think have been miscast in movies in the past few years? Argue with me if you like – I don’t think you’ll be able to change my mind! But I am going to choose one commenter and send her a copy of my most recent book The Warrior Laird. Maybe you’ll be able to tell me who you think should play the lead characters in that book!

I completely agree with Wickham in the BBC P&P. He’s not even cute. He’s a good actor, but not handsome enough to tempt me
I also agree with Katherine Heigl as Stephanie Plum. She tried. I don’t think she had a lot to work with in that script. We forget the books got better as the series continued.
I don’t watch a lot of TV or movies right now, so I can’t think of any picks. Ask me again in a few years…

Oh my gosh I got one Allan Cumming who played Mr. Elton in Emma. Actually a lot people in that movie, but mainly him. I’m sorry, Mr. Elton was suppose be a very good-looking man. He just didn’t do it for me. However, in the BBC version they casted so much better.

I’m with Mia on Alan Rickman as Colonel Branden. Love him! When the first Harry Potter movie came out, I wasn’t crazy about Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy. He just wasn’t the DM I saw in the movie in my mind. However, he eventually grew on me. The same went for Peter Facinelli as Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight movies. Just not the Dr. Cullen I envisioned. He did not grow on me. Casting I did love was the lot for the movie The Help. Perfection!

I’m definitely going to have to disagree with you Viggo. I really disliked the LOTR books though, and couldn’t finish them, so all my perceptions of the characters are from the actors in the movies!
However, I thought pretty much everyone in the BBC Pride and Prejudice was miscast. Wickham was a disaster, but I also thought Jane was terrible. She’s supposed to be this great beauty, and… she was completely outshone by Elizabeth. And don’t get me started on the overacting by their mother! I also don’t find Colin Firth attractive in any way, shape or form!
I haven’t seen One for the Money, and don’t think I ever will. I’m too fond of the book. I did like Morelli though. I’m so sick of people saying, “But he’s Irish!” Yes, and he’s also an ACTOR who plays different people from different countries!

I don’t watch a lot of movies, but my husband does, so I hear a lot of movies. I can’t stand the voice Chris Hemsworth uses for Thor. He may look the part, but his acting is not my cup of tea. I thought it was just the Thor movie, until I heard him use the same voice for the Snow White and the Huntsmen.
I love the LOTR books, so none of the casting was good enough for me. I don’t even want to see The Hobbit, because I imagine Hollywood will try to ruin that memory as well.

Whew – I’m glad you all agree on the Mr. Wickham guy.
But I don’t think anyone can convince me that Alan Rickman was right as Colonel Brandon. Honestly – I thought he played it beautifully (of course!) but I thought he was just too old. Him and Marianne? Ew.

Have you never read LITTLE WOMEN? Fritz was in his 40′s and flighty Jo so needed the steadying influence of that older man. It was not at all uncommon for a husband to have a decade (or 2!) on his bride during the Regency era. If you have to have an older guy, why not someone with a velvet voice like Alan?

Sonya – Yes! (Well, no about Viggo
) but yes about Jane in the BBV P&P. I have yet to see a Jane Bennett that I would say met Austen’s description.
Gayle – I know what you mean! You have a beloved book but once Hollywood gets hold of it — there go your images of who the characters are.

I haven’t seen all of the above but I have to say I did enjoy Viggo in LOTR. As to Justin, my oldest daughter has had a crush on him for the last ten years so I wouldn’t dare say anything against him (she may be listening lol). I totally agree about Adrian Lukis – just not swoon worthy.I am blank at the moment for actors I’ve disliked. I normally react to the ones I think did a marvelous job – like Huge Jackman in anything – he is the character! Just saw Denzel Washington in Safe House last night and he was perfect for the part.

I suppose actors try to hard to fit into their characters. Colin Firth, well, I not to crazy about him. Though Hugh Jackman is an overkill in the Wolverine movies. Not seen Justin Timber

I agree – Wickham was creepy. And Kathryn as Stephanie Plum didn’t fit. I didn’t read the books, but she just is too sweet for the role. And I agree about Alan Rickman. However, I think it was his daughter that supposedly had a child fathered by Willoughby? So, maybe the age was appropriate. Another one is the Nicholas Sparks movie, the Lucky One. I haven’t seen the movie, but I read the book & Zac Efron, although he’s a cutie, is too young for the part as I pictured it from the book.
