How adventurous are YOU?

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that I can have a cowardly streak.  I’ve never hang-glided or done any bungee jumping.  Neither have I climbed up the side of any mountains or raced dirt bikes.

But when it comes to food, I’ll try almost anything.  Recently I spent ten days in the South.  While there I decided to use the opportunity to try some new culinary delights.  I started off my stay in Savannah by trying Fried Green Tomatoes and Shrimp with Grits.  I loved them both!!   Then, while on St. Simon’s Island I tried boiled peanuts.  I have to admit that for me they were only “okay.”  I guess I like my peanuts more crunchy. :)

On the way to Atlanta, I stopped at Chik Fil A.  Yes, that’s right.  I’d never been in a Chik Fil A before.  Of course I had to try the classic chicken sandwich.  It was DELICIOUS.  I’m glad they don’t have any of these restaurants in Nebraska because I believe they could be addictive. lol

I’m curious.  What’s the last adventurous thing you’ve done?  If you’re willing to share, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win one of the books I brought back from the writing conference I attended in Atlanta.

Remember, check back on Sunday when the winners from all the drawings during the week will be posted!

I am not very adventurous person, even when it comes to food. A couple of years ago I tried mpanatigghi – a typical Sicilian biscuit from Modica filled with a mixture of almonds, nuts, chocolate, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and MINCED BEEF. It was delicious! I’m curious to try pasta with cephalopod ink. It’s very popular here in Italy, people tell it’s good, but the black color looks too suspicious to me :)

      Natalija,

Mpanatigghi sounds interesting. Of course, anything with chocolate would interest me.

In terms of pasta with cephalopod ink…I’d need to know what is in the cephalopod ink…and I’d need for you to try it first!

When it comes to food, the most adventurous thing I’ve tried must be haggis. I was a bit nervouw to eat it, but in the end I asolutely liked it.
    Otherwise I don’t think I’m a very adventurous person.

When I was in Scotland I thought about trying Haggis…now with your ringing endorsement, I wished I had!

I love to be adventurous especially with food. When I grew up, my Mom cooked well but things were relatively bland. My husband and I have always loved to experiment with food. When we lived in Paris, we tried all kinds of delicious things. Escargot is to die for. We loved the shellfish which includes things like little periwinkles that you dig out with a nail and tiny shrimp that you eat shell and all. We were served brains at a cocktail party and I admit being reluctant to try them but they tasted just like scrambled eggs. Fried soft shell crabs are a southern favorite. Aren’t friend green tomatoes yummy? I fix shrimp and grits once a week. It is so easy! As much as I would love to eat all this fattening food all the time, we really do rein in and eat healthy. My husband makes the best salmon! Anybody want to come to our house to eat? ;-)

I’m on my way over!! I think we should hang out. You’d be a good influence on me and make me even more adventurous.

I have to tell you that my mother grew up eating brains and scrambled eggs and LOVED them. Until other people started telling her how gross they were…

I’ll usually try anything, but the last culinary adventure I declined was a “pork tartar” dish in Germany. I grew up in Iowa. Raw pork can give you trichinosis and ruin your whole day.

      Mia,

I didn’t know you grew up in Iowa…why, we were practically neighbors. And I wouldn’t eat raw pork either.

In August, I went out West (Utah and Arizona) to visit my son. We hiked and hiked and hiked in 100+ heat. The Subway, The Narrows and up to the top of Observation Mt at Zion National Park. Several trails at Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Also hiked down into the Grand Canyon from the North Rim. I normally walk everyday but this was way beyond that.

      Laurie,

I’m soooo impressed. Utah is on my soon-to-be visited list. I was at the Grand Canyon last Spring and thought about hiking down. I walk about 2-4 miles a day…was it…really taxing??

      - Reply
      • Laurie G Said:

Yes it was taxing! We only went about 7 miles down into the canyon. Once you get past the smell(the first couple of miles), it’s beautiful and worth it. Bring lot’s of water! Hard going back up again. My son and his wife traveled to the South Rim (stayed over) and then hiked back again (17 miles each way). I wasn’t up for that! The stars at night AMAZING!!

ZION -loved,loved LOVED! So impressive! The view from the top of Observation Point! You feel like you are on top of the world! We got a day hiking pass for The Subway. Strenuous trek down to the water’s edge but oh the slide waterfalls and the actual subway tunnel at the end, so worth the effort! Temps 100′s but had a dry breeze so it wasn’t uncomfortable. DRINK A LOT Of WATER!

Bryce is strange, otherworldly. I felt like I was on a strange planet. HOT!

I think it stems from being the youngest in my family; and that I rebelled in my teens that I will do just about anything if anyone asked me to. If anyone dares me to do something – which won’t kill me – I’ll probably do it. I’m a very spontaneous kind of person. For example, on my 38th, birthday last year, we were at the German Club here in Brisbane – during Oktoberfest! – and I heard a song I knew playing the dance hall and I turned to my Mum and said, “Come on, let’s dance!”… well, she um and arred about it while I ran into the hall with all the drunk people and began dancing. By the end of the song, she thought about dancing to it in a way where nothing jiggled, but I didn’t care. I was already dancing. By the time the song ended Mum was about to join me. I turned to her and asked her, “What happened to you being so spontaneous? You used to be that way?” she shrugged, “I’m not so much anymore.” I don’t ever want to be hesitant… never ever.

Cindy, you totally crack me up! Every mom I know would laugh her butt off at the idea of Chick-fil-a being adventurous.
Henry and I eat there about once a week! But you’re right, it’s a struggle to find things for me to eat that are not a health disaster. I like their chicken soup and salad.
btw, never had boiled peanuts. that just sounds wrong.

Well, when we lived Louisiana you have to tried the food. I mean I have learned I’m not a fan of most Cajun & creole food: like dirty rice and gumbo yuck. Anyways, I do like crawfish and gator isn’t bad. I really had the urge to write ain’t.

Growing up we had a menudo. Yep, I think that stuff is tasty with a splash of lemon. That is pretty much my adventures with food.

And you have me wondering…did the alligator taste like chicken??

I’m not often adventurous and when I am it usually isn’t planned. When it comes to trying new food I can be. Sometimes I’m tricked into it by family or friends and a fancy name. I remember trying frog legs a while back (didn’t know it at the time). At least I can say I’ve tried it, lol.

I’m usually willing to give anything a try once lol. The most adventurous for me was climbing a mountain on horseback and I don’t know how to ride. Going up was fine, down not so great. My horse fell!! As to foods, I will try anything once too. I enjoy escarot, anchovies, squid, frog legs, crawfish and even liver lol. I tried ostrich once but wasn’t thrilled. I keep trying sushi and so far it’s just okay.

Yes, Chick-Fil-A’s classic chicken sandwich is great and addictive, and they have fantastic made-from-scratch lemonade, too! My most adventurous food, lately, was Irish stew! It wouldn’t seem adventurous to most, but I have to be somewhat careful in restaurants, because there are some spices that don’t agree with me, at all, and others, such as garlic, that I can only have in small quantities. I like to try new recipes at home, though, and actually like to try new foods.

I am not very adventurous when it comes to food. I’ll eat anything vegetable, but I don’t eat meat. I have been to CFA many times, though, because my daughter likes it. And they do have healthy options–grilled chicken, applesauce, etc.
