A Tribute to Reading Romance Novels

Recently I learned the value of not reading romance.

Wait! Don’t throw stones at me! I’m not advocating you put aside your romance novels and go out in search of other books here. =)

You see, recently I just haven’t had time to read.

To be honest, it’s been such a long time (before this) since I haven’t had one book or another going that to hear somebody say they don’t have time to read just makes me roll my eyes. I usually sacrifice sleep (something all you other moms know we treasure dearly) just so I can get my “me time” in by reading. But, alas, I didn’t have time to read because of various crazy things going on in life and actually *needing* any few minutes of extra sleep I could get.

So I didn’t read. For an entire month, possibly. (I honestly can’t believe it, either.)

But this past weekend, I finally settled down and gave myself a break. I picked up my Kindle, turned it on, scrolled through my alarmingly huge list of To Be Read books (and, I admit, this always makes me a little giddy), and finally selected Lecia Cornwall’s debut from last year, SECRETS OF A PROPER COUNTESS. (I had read her second book and loved it, so was pretty certain this one would be just as great.) And guess what?

Reading again was one of the best feelings in the world. It was like…chicken noodle soup…for my soul. Wait–I think that’s a nonfiction inspirational book series, isn’t it? ;) Well, it’s true. It felt like I was with an old friend, like I was wrapped up in a cozy afghan in front of a roaring fire (let’s use our imaginations and imagine it wasn’t 90 degrees outside…), and that there was a knight in my kitchen making double chocolate brownies just for me.

I think you get the picture. =)

Reading romances again…after not reading for so long…made me realize again just how much I love reading them. In fact, I enjoyed myself (and the book) so much that I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up past my own bedtime to finish it, and of course then I had to go on to Goodreads and find the next book the author was writing. Reading after this hiatus made me remember why I became a writer, too: to be able to put my own words together and create my own hero and heroine and their own sigh-worthy love story? Amazing.

So, dear friend, consider this my tribute to reading romance novels. There is no need for you to put aside your books and take your own month-long hiatus; in fact, I don’t recommend it. That’s just masochism! But, like me, if you ever come to a point in your life where you simply aren’t able to take any time at all to read and you have to give up romance for a while, know that when you come back, it will be as if you never stopped reading at all. Your heart will race when the hero and heroine first meet, your cheeks will blush when they have their first wicked encounter, your chest will ache when all seems impossible, and you will sigh with happiness when you reach their happily-ever-after.

And all will be well with the world again. =)

What about you? How do you feel when you come back to reading romances after it’s been a while (or even if it’s just when you open up a new book)? Chicken noodle soup for your soul? Cozy afghan in front of roaring fire? Handsome knight making brownies? Or is that just me? =)

I sometimes use a book by a particular author as a carrot, luring me to finish whatever I must do. It’s true, Elise. Romance novels are a balm and a joy. Lovely blog!

Hi Kristan! I’ve recently tried doing this, and I agree–it’s a really great motivator. =) Glad you enjoyed the blog!

I sometimes read books other than romance–literary fiction (gasp!) or a memoir or biography or a research book. While I enjoy most of these forays into other genres, I always enjoy coming home again. That’s how it feels to me, like coming home to the familiar, the place I belong.

Hi Shana! I recently joined a book club just so I would have more impetus to read outside the genre. Because I only have a certain amount of time, I admit I usually just read romance for pleasure (writing books and history books and parenting books, etc. are a different sort of pleasure for me =). Expanding horizons is good, but I agree–romance is always wonderful to come back to. =)

I read a wide variety of books – my parents were big on reading, so there was always something interesting to read — well actually, there were always several things to read – and god forbid you start something that they were in the middle of reading!!! But romance is always like comfort food [and way less fattening!!].. Thanks for writing!!

Hi Cate! Three hurrahs for parents who love to read!!! =D I can’t wait for the day when we’re able to have a family “book club”. I’ve been saving the Harry Potter series for the time when the girls and I can read it together. =)

Nice blog, Elise! Usually the only time I’m not reading romance or women’s fiction is when I’m on deadline. It’s definitely like coming home when I sink into a new book for pure reading pleasure!

Thanks, Nancy! I think there should be a romance novel-scented candle to remind us of that special feeling. Definitely chocolate-infused. =)

I do not ever not read romaance, but what I don’t read a lot of these days and I must start, because I have so many, is historal romances, like Regency and Victorian ones. I read a lot of historial western romance. So I am going to try this month to get in a few more of those “Historial” romances calling to my from my TBR shelves…

Hi Kathleen! I do that a lot, too–go back and forth between romance sub-genres. I find it helps me appreciate the various ones better. =) As for historical westerns, have you tried Elaine Levine? I’ve heard she’s great.

Great post, thank you for sharing this, Elise! :)

No, you are not alone, that is exactly how reading romances make me feel as well. It breaks my heart that so many just do not understand the wonders of these books; they just do not know what they are missing! I’m glad that I found romance all those years ago; without it, I think I would have been lost (I know, that sounds cliche and so dramatic, but I think, in some way, it’s true!).

Here’s hoping that, even if you don’t have the time to read all day, you can still find time to enjoy your romances! :) Glad to see you back, too.

    Enjoy!

I didn’t read anything at all for about 2 months. When I finally picked up a romance book to read again I couldn’t put it down at all. I read so much that I even went to sleep dreaming about the book and the characters in the book.

Hi Alyn! I’m so glad you know exactly what I mean. =) I felt the same way. Those characters are still stuck in my head…

No, they are not fitted, and yes, you can get a silgne. But you can also get a double with dual control and keep your side turned off. There’s another solution, too. Heated matress pad. Instead of heat over you, it’s heat under you. Much more efficient and comfortable. Also comes dual controlled.

I never go without reading – maybe 1 night here or there but it is rare. When I worked long hours I was mostly a passenger and I have no problem reading in a car or bus or lunch hour etc. Now I read before going to bed. I do read a variety but I find when I go back to a particular genre, I am usually at my happiest.

Hi catslady! One of my favorite times to read is before bedtime, too. Mainly because I know it’s the least likely time for me to be interrupted. ;) I have to say, I’m so happy that I’m back to reading again!!

Since I read a variety of genres, I am not always reading something in the romance genre. Lately I have been on a crime/mystery fiction kick and have discovered some new authors who I am raving about (Ginny Aiken and Cricket McRae just to name a few of the new ones). However, when I do return back to a romance it feels like coming home after a long trip. It is like that feeling when you submerge yourself in a nice, hot, bubble bath and your body finally adjusts to the temperature of the water and all of your cares and troubles melt away. Romance, for me, is the go to read whenever I start to feel disenfranchised with the world in general and I need something to restore my faith in HEA’s!

Hi Lora! This was so incredibly well put. (And I think I’ve heard of Ginny Aiken!) One of the authors I’ve been dying to try but never get around to is C.S. Harris. I know so many people love her books. Might have to put the first title on my Christmas list this year. =)

It’s been a while since I haven’t read any romances. I was ill and deeply depressed and went without reading one for a couple of months. When I felt better and started reading again, it felt like coming home. I love reading the journey of the hero and heroine and I love their HEAs.

Great post, Elise. Coming back to romance after a break away (usually if I’m in the throws of a deadline) is like coming home. It’s like all the gears shift into place and everything feels right in the world.
