The Best of Robyn’s blogs…An Anniversary of Sorts

ORIGINALLY POSTED: OCTOBER 4TH, 2006

Two years ago this month, The Professor got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. It was October 30th to be exact. Now I happen to believe that I received the most romantic proposal ever, but I’m willing to open myself up to be proven wrong. Did your husband go all out and propose to you while at a baseball game? Or did he take you to Tiffany’s in the middle of the night? Whatever it is, I want to hear it. But I’m telling you, I’m gonna win.

So here are my details…

He came and picked me up on a Saturday afternoon and I admit he was later than he said he was going to be. He’d been hinting at things all week and had been asking a lot of random questions, and we had already been ring shopping a few weeks before, so I suspected something was going on. Frankly, he’s not so good with secrets, but his obvious hints are charming. I thought we were going to this restaurant in a nearby town and then hitting the zoo in San Antonio (because of some random question he’d asked me about polar bears). I got into the car and as if by magic our song started to play. He was excited and energetic and I was a basketcase.

Not only that, but the plan I thought he had was way wrong. We started up a road that leads straight into the heart of the Texas Hill Country to a picnic site overlooking what is known as the Devil’s Backbone. It was where I’d taken him on a picnic shortly after we started dating. And a place I’d loved as a child; a special place. Because off in the distance upon one of the hills stood a lone tree, standing proudly. Ever since I was a little girl, when my family would drive past that site, I would always say, “That’s my tree.” Little did I know that a silly childhood tradition would become part of my own love story. You can see a picture of “my tree” on this blog.

So he had me go sit at the table while he gathered all the goods. Picnic basket (totally cute – looks like a large version of the one Dorothy carries in Wizard of Oz), linens, cooler, etc. He set everything out, then unloaded the food, all my favorite stuff, crab cakes, pesto, bread, pasta, chocolate (what a man!), chilled white wine. So we ate and talked and the weather was perfect even though we’d been forecasted rain and clouds.

After we ate he went back to the car, and then returned with even more stuff. One of which was one of those house-shaped boxes (you mom’s probably recognize it) – he’d gone to Build-A-Bear and he’d made me a polar bear (cause I just love polar bears, cute rascals!). The bear was holding this little red heart-shaped pillow that said “I love you”, and then The Professor proceeded to read me a 2-page love letter he’d written about how much he loved me and how much he’d learned about love from me and why he wanted to be with me forever (insert me sobbing at this point). Then he got down on one knee, told me to look in the heart pillow where I found my ring, asked me to be his wife to which I replied, “absolutely!” and he put that pretty sparkler on my hand. And that day I learned why that tree had always been special to me. *sigh*

Think you can beat that? Even if you can’t all of our proposals are special to us, so spill the beans girls, how’d he ask you?

What a terrific and romantic story, Robyn! I wish I could say that my husband was equally as romantic but no, he wasn’t. I knew right away that he was the guy for me but I think he felt he wasn’t ready to settle down. He had just graduated from college and had a wonderful job with NASA and he was working on his Master’s degree. NASA sent him to VPI to finish his studies and while he was away, he found he was lonely for me. When he came home for Thanksgiving, he proposed and we were married right before Christmas. I guess it’s true that absence makes the heart grow fonder. We’ve been married for 45 years and he’s still the love of my life.

    OMG, Robyn….so romantic.

My husband of many, many years, doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body.

But I know he loves me and I love him..and that’s what matters.

What a wonderful proposal, Robyn! I especially like the two page love letter–getting it in writing for a writer! I have to admit I didn’t have much of a proposal, partly because I got kicked out of the house–but I did get to spend my actual wedding day hiding in a hill country arroyo because my father sent the Border Patrol to snatch my husband. I think I’d go for a great proposal next time!

I missed your proposal story when it was first posted and I loved it!

I’m afraid my husband’s proposal wasn’t quite as romantic! He was in the Navy during Vietnam and the day before he was leaving on a training deployment and being a “take charge” type of guy he turned to me and said “After I get back we’ll pick a date and get married”!

He was only gone 6 weeks but I realized then we didn’t know how tomorrows there would be and piked a date! A few weeks before the wedding we when we were planning on going to get the marriage license his commanding officer almost didn’t give him the time off saying “If the Navy wanted you to have a wife you would have been issued one with your sea bag”! Fortunately he relented!

After he finished his enlistment he joined the Navy Reserves and was a “week-end warrior” serving on helicopters and then on P-3′s (just like in Tom Clancy’s Hunt for Red October he “hunted” for Russian submarines”) until he retired after 24 years of service.

This year we celebrated our 42nd anniversary! Just goes to show that sometimes it’s not the words but the actions that count in the long run. In all the years we’re been married he always introduces me as his “first wife”! My “better-half” does have a sense of humor!

How sweet! My proposal was very different. We were in the parking lot of a convenience store and he looked across the top of the car at me and said, “You want to get married or what?” Yeah. But when he bought my ring he took me to McNay Art Institute and got down on one knee :)
