I hope I’m not rushing the season…

I don’t know about where you live, but in Nebraska it has been HOT (and humid) this summer.  So hot that unless you go for a walk at 6:30 in the morning, forget going later.  But for the past few days we’ve been having a cool spell and it’s been, well, like Fall has arrived early.   Unfortunately the forecasters are saying the heat will return very, very soon and won’t leave us again until October.

This is another time that I hope they’ve gotten it wrong.

Anyway, with it being so hot this summer, I’ve begun to long for Fall. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons.  Actually, I’d enjoy it a whole lot more if I knew that Winter didn’t follow it.  Of course, last Winter was wonderful with nary a snowflake in sight.  Can we say…global warming?

Anyway, as you know each Jaunty has been bringing back an old favorite post this month.  I was looking through the ones I’d written and this one jumped out at me.  It was written last September, but even though I’m rushing the season even more this year (since it’s only August now), I thought it was appropriate.  Just so you know, the prize offered for your top 5 list is something I added…

Okay, so I may be getting a little ahead of myself, but surely I’m not the only one who considers Fall to start on September 1. While I realize the season doesn’t officially begin until September 21, I’m going to jump the gun and talk about the Top 5 Things I Like Most about Fall.

To tie it into books and writing…whenever I have a book that takes place during the Fall, I always look to see what kind of activities and events are happening in the area where the book is set. In my book that is on the shelves now, If The Ring Fits (September 2011), I went to the Jackson Hole Events Calendar to see what events I could have my characters attend that would be true to the area.

At this time of year in Jackson Hole, people go to the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival in Jackson. So, guess where my characters went? Yep, to the Fall Arts Festival (and they had a great time!)

Anyway, back to the post and my Top 5 Things I Like About Fall:

1. The cool weather. Note: I said “cool” NOT cold. What’s not to like about weather in the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s? As long as I don’t have to wear my heavy wool coat with mittans and a scarf, I’m happy!

2. Autumn leaves. There’s nothing more beautiful than when the trees change colors…and bushes, too!

3. College Football. Need I say more? Oh, yeah, GO HUSKERS!

4. Pumpkins and gourds on the porch. It doesn’t even need to be Halloween to put these out…though I think it needs to be at least October 1. Sort of like not wearing white shoes before Memorial Day.

5. Hot Apple Cider (with a cinnamon stick, of course) or a Pumpkin Spice latte. Yum…..

Tell me the top five things YOU like about Fall and you’ll be entered into a drawing to win one of the books I picked up at the Romance Writers of America’s National Conference in Anaheim last month. The winner will be posted by 2pm on Sunday!

So, check back then to see if you’re a winner!

You are so right, I love fall too. Cider, pumpkins, leaves…but no sports I’m afraid! Just long walks with crunchy leaves!

I love the smell of rain and the colorful leaves, during a walk. I love wearing wooly sweaters and sitting by the fire with a cup of tea. My daughters birthday is in autumn & I love baking pumpkin pie and cinnamon cookies to celebrate.

Oooh pumpkin pie and cinnamon cookies…if someone didn’t know what season we were discussing, those two food items would definitely give it away!

Growing up in California we didn’t really get a fall. I know there are some parts that actually get season, just not the coast. So, this will be my first real fall. This is what I’m excited for:
    1. Cooler weather, because this 90 degree weather is no fun. Granted I could be back in the south where it just turns to winter.
    2. The fall colors. I like browns, yellow, red and orange.
    3. I love that baseball draws to an end. I’m not a baseball fan. However, I do like football.
    4. I love seeing the fall/winter vegetables start to make an appearance. Yummy butternut squash.
    5. Baked goods. This is beginning of baking season. The smell of cookies and pies, yum. I’m definitely a sweets kinda girl.

How could I forget the soups?!! The thought of a nice hot bowl of chili or chowder doesn’t hold the same appeal when you’re sweating and the sun is blazing down on you.

Its been miserable here in the northeast this year. On an average year we get one 3-5 day ‘heat wave’ and I think it has been a never-ending heat wave since my AC has been working overtime since May. I have been making everyone’s lives miserable at work this past week reminding them that last year we got our October blizzard so maybe it is only another 2 months before it SNOWS…Fall is my most favorite time of the year though…things I look forward to are:
    1) Changing those clocks back and getting that extra hour of sleep!
    2) Cool morning where walking the dog her 3 miles without being in a sauna
    3) Eating foods that are not cooked on the grill! Love the grill in May and June but come July, August I am sick of grilled foods and can’t wait for a nice roasted turkey or pork roast that takes all day in the oven
4)Birthdays! October and November are loaded with birthdays and anniversary’s
5)Agricultural Fairs – up here in the northeast we have them in September and October
    5) Adding a sixth one here – Hockey Season Starts!!!! Can’t stand baseball or football – but love my sweaty hockey players!

      Wendy,

You came up with some good ones! And you’re right, I’m ready to use the oven again. Or I will be once the temperature drops and it’s truly autumn.

Until then…microwave, grill or eating out for me!

When we retired, we moved to Florida to escape winter. However, summer in Florida is rather beastly. Therefore, we look forward to fall too. Since we don’t really have winter there, my favorite things are a bit different.

    1. Fresher air
    2. I can turn off the A/C and open the sliders
    3. Fall is our spring in Florida so we have lots of annuals to plant
    4. I can get out and walk without coming back dripping with sweat
    5. The kiddies are back in school and things are quieter (Now, wasn’t that evil?) ;-)

      Connie,

Opening the windows and getting some fresh air in the house. Oh my, it seems like forever since we’ve been able to do that.

As far as being happy the kids are in school, I feel that same way every Monday when my husband heads off to work and I can write in a quiet house. I don’t even turn on the radio or the television during the day. (that’s the first thing he turns on weekend mornings)

I attribute my obsession with cooler weather to the fact that my AC has been broken for a week now and it’s HOT here! The obsession with Apple Cider donuts needs no explanation I think!
