Time after time, in talking to readers, reviewers and even booksellers–all people who know the romance market–I am surprised, nay shocked!, to discover that many have no idea that there IS a historical series published by Harlequin. Some remember it from the 80s and think it folded after that. Some never knew about it at all. I even met a Harlequin sales rep at a region tradeshow who assured me that there was no such thing – and was puzzled when I showed him my about-to-be-released HH!
And it’s a shame because, unlike the other Harlequin lines that focus sharply on a specific type or location or hook that is similar in all the books of that line, HHistoricals include a wide variety of romances, from a diverse group of settings and time periods, and that include every level of sensuality from sweet to very, very sexy. 9th Century Tang Dynasty China? HH has it. Medieval England? Got it! Highland warriors or Western cowboys? Oh yes we do!
Each month there are six Harlequin Historical releases — 4 are available in stores, in print, and all 6 are available in digital formats and to the direct ‘book club’. Usually there are 2 Regencies, 1 Western/Frontier and 1 ‘other’-sometimes a Victorian, sometimes a Medieval, sometimes Romans or Vikings so a nice variety is offered each month.
So, do you need to discover or rediscover Harlequin Historicals? Are you looking for a wonderful historical romance? Then give us a try!
To encourage readers to give us a try, or another try, the Harlequin Historical Authors are sponsoring a Summer Giveaway — because the summer is just a great time for reading — with a Grand Prize of a Kindle Fire (or comparable Kindle if non-US winner) along with a selection of our books. AND, each of the authors involved are also giving away individual prizes, too! Since my day is today, you’re all invited to enter and try to win my individual prize – I’m giving a digital copy of my upcoming HH Undone short story and a copy of the first book in my new MacLerie series — to 4 different winners!
To nudge. . . er. . . encourage you to give us a try, I’m going to choose one poster today and they will receive a set of HHs from one of the weeks of our contest — your choice! Also, if you post a comment here, I’ll even give you an ‘extra’ entry.
So, post, enter and think about giving Harlequin Historicals a try this summer!
Terri is at work on the third of her new MacLerie Clan trilogy and can’t wait for readers to meet up with the children of the first Highlander series! The series will be introduced by TAMING THE HIGHLAND ROGUE, a digital short story, in August and the first book, THE HIGHLANDER’S STOLEN TOUCH, is available in September. Visit her website for lots of info about her books and her events.

I knew! I knew! I will admit they do fly a little under the radar. Maybe the HHs are overshadowed by the other lines a little?

I think that readers believe that if a historical isn’t a couple of inches thick… it’s not ‘historical’ enough.. WRONG!!!

I knew it but I haven’t read one in a while. Actually I don’t remember even seeing any in a store. Is there some reason that Harlequin doesn’t promote them?

Sandi –
HHs are a hybrid and Harlequin doesn’t always seem to know where to put them — heck, even RT doesn’t. We’re the only Harlequin series without our own reviewer/category!
When I began writing them in 2002, we were part of the NY single title office – along with LUNA, MIRA and HQN…then we weren’t!
BUT, although HHs are a small line in the US, we are one of the leading global lines — one of the top 4 — which is cool…

I have read MANY of the Harlequin Historicals over the years. I really enjoy the variety- westerns, Medievals, Regencies, and Highlanders. A particular favorite of mine is the Christmas anthologies.

I have to admit that before I was in the book business I didn’t know the line was around. Honestly I didn’t know much about HQN until we had a bookstore. I love the HH line! Now that our store is closed I have much more time to read them too.
