I did something this year I swore I wouldn’t do again. I hit the stores Thanksgiving night for the pre-Black Friday (Black Thursday) sales.
Oh. My. God. If you are short (like moi) you’d better go in prepared to fight for what you want. I used to think they called it Black Friday because the stores made their years profit that day. Ha! They call it that because the shoppers are bruised when it’s over.
The seemingly sane people you’ve been conversing with for hours while you wait will turn into fang bearing creatures with a hunger for the thirty (or less or more) items up for the huge sale. However I am proud to say I was determined and stood my ground (thanks to the help of one brave soldier who gave me a hand, as in pulling me out of the bottom of the pile with arms laden with stuff.)
Will I do it again? Uh, no.
But then I’ve said those words before. What about you? Did you power shop on the mega sale weekend? Fight the crowds or play it sane and order it all online?

I hide, Janette. The thrill of a sale is not in my genetic makeup. I’d rather have a more peaceful experience and pay a few bucks more. Black Friday is the one day of the year I guarantee you I will not leave my house!

We went to the gym and worked out on Black Friday. I may go somewhere but never to a store.

Nope, I slept. If Baby Galen is sleeping at night, I am too. Plus–and you will probably hate me for this–I was already done with most of my shopping

This year my daughter (20) went out shopping with her friends, I felt bored after Thanksgiving dinner and decided to go out around 10:30PM surprised my 12 yr old son wanted to tag along… Went to Walmart (bought a TV didn’t even plan on buying), Target(other goodies) and lastly Best Buy which I had drove by twice before midnight and had about a mile long line until about 2:00AM. When the line outside disappeared I went in and bought my son his so awaited video games and other goodies. Hadn’t planned on going but it was a nice adventure and got good deals. Luckily no bruises for me ;D

Oh boy – I haven’t done ANY shopping at all. I haven’t even made a list! I am so far behind, it’s not even funny. But even if I were … I would not have ventured out on Thursday or Black Friday. I am not a good shopper on the best of days. I’d hate to think how I’d be if I were out shopping on the worst of days!

We don’t usually have Black Friday in Canada. Most of our citizens have our the day after Christmas, refered to as Boxing Day, when you get all the great sales. I only went once and that was last year and it was only becasue we wanted a flat screen TV for our mom who was in a nursing home. She loved ot watch TV, so I braved the sales with my brother, but never again…
You can keep your sales, really people are just plain nuts..and like you say bruises are a part of the day..

I avoid the Black Friday craziness. I’m sure there are great deals, but I don’t like crowds and enjoy my sleep too much to stand in line in the wee hours. I’ve done most of my holiday shopping online, which works perfectly for me. I’ve found some great deals, too!

I haven’t done that Black Friday since the 90′s.. I hate crowds, searching for a parking space, rude shoppers and the advertised merchandise not available… I’m an online or off-time shopper !!

I’ve done Black Friday sales twice but I’ve discovered it’s rarely worth it.
First, not all the “sale” prices are actually lower. Some of them are equal to every day prices or less by a couple of dollars. I’ve seen some that were actually a little higher on Black Friday.
Second, most of the electronics “on sale” are usually models that being replaced by newer models and this is a way to clear the back stock. But I bought a computer on Black Friday that I knew was an model being replaced but that didn’t make a difference to me.
Third, OMG some of those Black Friday shoppers are NUTS! Did you hear about the woman with the pepper spray who used it to clear the way to stuff she wanted? YIKES!
But I do like shopping at off hours, like 2 in the morning!

I once stood in line by the entry door at Best Buy to get a new laptop and had the same kind of friendly chats. Then the manager unlocked the exit door first and those who had been waiting less time got in first. I got the laptop but had to wait behind people who had been behind me in line outside. If the store had run out I would’ve pitched a royal hissy fit but luckily the store had enough in stock. But the experience made me realize that common coutersy is virtually dead. I’ll never do black Friday again!

I TOTALLY agree with Cynthia D’Alba there, I just went this year for kicks, didn’t even know what the hot items were, only got what I thought as a bargain like the last 2 Harry Potter movies for $5 and $6 bucks- the ones missing in my sons collection and some video games half off. The TV box is still unopened… might return that, I think I’m a we bit compulsive buyer- love a bargain!

Kristan I love to shop but this was more survival of the fitness. Not my ideal.
Sandi, that’s smart. I wondered if the gyms would be crowded.
I don’t blame you, Shana.
That’s funny Lorelei! My shopping experience was spontaneous too. But I don’t know as I’ll repeat the event. In fact I know I won’t.
Margo you have your work cut out for you then. I have a couple of very easy gifts to pick up. But for the most part I’m done. We’re done to hammering out those final plans for when everyone is the family is celebrating. It’s certainly not going to be restful, which is annoying.
Kathleen you’re right. A good deal of people are just crazy when it comes to grabbing these “sweet deals” that aren’t always that sweet.
I generally buy the bulk of my gifts online too, Catherine. Don’t know why I didn’t as much this year. Well, guess I know but I just don’twant to admit it.
CateS I’d far rather shop at leisure and happen on those sales. Hate the crowds as well.
I like that early bird or late shopper stuff too Cynthia. Like having the store all to yourself!
Yeah, that behavior just plain stinks, Diane. Amazing how the sane do the big ugly switch.
Smart Molly. Online shopping obliterates the stress load.
