Each year for the last twelve or so years, my summer has been defined by the RWA Conference. It’s always in July, usually the last week of the month, and I know that once the 4th of July holiday passes, it’s time to hunker down and get meetings and meals and workshops scheduled. By the time I get home from the conference, August is underway and I can see the end of summer and beginning of the school year approaching. It’s almost comforting in a way to know the flow of my summers.
But this year, it’s all confused! The conference was held a month earlier (hotel renovations) and also a day earlier in the week, too. So events always on Thursday were on Wednesday this year…leading me to miss several things I like to attend. And I know I was not the only one…. I did all that conference planning in May and June and now the 4th of July has passed and . . . .
I am lost!
How do I make it through the rest of the summer?
Well, honestly, I do have some things to do. . . and lots of things I don’t have to worry over now, too. I could write. . . well, I WILL write since I have two projects I need to work on and get into my editors or my agent.
Stories are beginning to swirl in my mind and I need to put words to them and get them down so they begin to make sense. Characters are beginning to speak to me — one actually opened my front door and walked in today, though he or she is not speaking directly to me yet. Scenery, medieval Scotland for the most part, is beginning to scroll across my vision at the oddest times. Celtic symbols are appearing in my dreams.
I guess it’s time to write!
But, I think I’ll also read all the books I put aside when last on my deadline binge of writing, and I think I’ll clean my office, and I think I’ll catch up on all the recorded TV shows I have saved, and I think I’ll. . . .
Ok, nevermind on the cleaning the office thing, but the rest sounds good! And if I really put my mind to it, maybe I’ll make my way down to the shore, the REAL Jersey shore, and spend a day on the beach, wearing my darkest sunglasses and doing what all writers do. . . people-watch! Oh yeah!
So, in this lull between now and the end of summer, what will you be doing? Traveling? Catching up on chores or reading? Prep for school or family things? Is summer all R&R for you or is it just as busy as every other season of the year? Since I collected more than a few books at the RWA conference, I’ll send out a couple to each of two people who post a comment and I’ll include a book of mine, too!

This is the first summer in awhile that I haven’t taken a class, but will have to begin that all over again next summer.
We have had a busy summer with my daughter’s swimming lesssons and an art workshop in June. Next week she is taking a week long workshop with the Old Creamery Theater and will be in a play. Then, we have visitors here from Denmark for 12 days and will be touring parts of eastern Iowa with them. August 4 to Aug. 15 are “free” days and my daughter hopes to go to an amusement park again this summer. Then, school begins for me on August 16 and on the 24th for my daughter. BTW, my husband needs back surgery, so it could fall anywhere in this time frame!
A crazy, but very fast summer

I’m experiencing an exceptionally hectic summer. Summer started with 2 of my nephew’s graduation parties (1 HS, 1 college). Then an engagement party for the older nephew whose wedding is next May.
July 2nd we attended a wedding reception for my husband’s cousin. Second marriage for both bride and groom so it was held in his cousin’s backyard.
This weekend I’m attending a wedding of my oldest son’s friend. My son married in April. This is the guy who introduced Luke to his wife. In August (13th) another of his friends a HS classmate is getting married to another HS classmate.
In addition we are having two baby showers for my daughter (28). First grandchild on both sides. The dad’s side is having the shower on August 6th. I’m having my side on Labor Day weekend.
Also they are moving to their first house. The closing is July 18th. We spent last Friday-Monday packing their belonging in 95* heat. Next week we are going to spend painting and fixing things up at their new place.
We own rental property and one tenant is breaking their lease so we’ve been showing that place too. Last night someone said they want to rent it. So cross your fingers that that goes through.
It’s been CRAZY!
It’s been fun seeing the family but this is ridiculous!
I need some relaxing reading time!

I’m not able to travel this summer but I have a nice garden where I hope to spend many pleasant hours. Reading romances, drinking tea, watching the flowers & maybe entertaining a friend. If the weather is nice I might even get a healthy glow.
Other then that I plann to watch my Jane Austen dvd collection again, it’s been a while since I saw them last & for some reason Darcy never gets old

I’m just going to take it easy this summer.
Yeah…right! In my dreams, there’s always something to do or some place I have to be.
I finished painting our house! YAY!! Our house looks like a rainbow now! LOL!! Colors everywhere!
I have loads of brand new recipes I would love to try out. Grilling recipes and smoking recipes, time to try out our new smoker.
Also getting ready for company. My mom and sister will be staying for a week soon. Later my son and DIL will be coming for a visit. Can’t wait to see everyone! Miss them all so much since we moved.
My main focus is to try and make a dent in my TBR pile!! Now that is something I am willing to do with pleasure!
Have an awesome day!!

Good news for us that you will be writing! I could use a new Scottish fix! Our vacation plans got canceled due to family complications. I miss the old days when I use to take my girls to the local YMCA pool and read, read, read guilt free. But I never go to sleep without reading. Sleep is overrated lol.

Sounds like everyone is split between R&R and being busy, too!
Do you all change your reading habits during the summer? Change genres or go with shorter reads? I usually find myself reading action/adventure/hidden history fiction in the summer.. like Steve Berry or Richard Doetsch…

Since I am a teacher, I savor and treasure my summer.
I try not to let my mind start planning the next school year until August, although sometimes it tends to head that way.
I try to spend June getting all the cleaning, errands, and other summer projects done.
That way, I have July to enjoy catching up my reading. It is about the only time my TBR pile actually lowers.

Our summer has been mixed. My husband’s youngest sister died last month which brought sadness and a family reunion that we didn’t really want this way. We had trips to airports, two brothers and a sister-in-law staying here. Thanks to gas prices our trip to CA has been canceled. Next month we are going to our son’s in NC for our grandson’s 8th birthday. The only happy note this summer.

did change up some this year when don’t normally. went on brief kick of paranormal/sci fi (which I don’t usually read) as well as several short stories & novellas. e-books makes it easier to switch up things a little on the spur, particularly with the short stories & novellas which I typically would otherwise stay away from.

I usually try to catch up on outside chores during the summer and getting the house painted and cleaned up on days you can’t get outside due to the heat. My son is mowing the lawn today so I don’t have to do it. I am having some issues with a tooth. I do plan on going to spend the weekend with my sister this coming weekend going with my niece should be a fun weekend. Its our little get away away from husbands for the weekend and we usually have a good time when we go.
