Have you ever been in a ….?

With the tsunami following the Japan earthquake in the news so much the past few days, I realized that I would have NOOO idea what to do if I was somewhere when an earthquake hit.

I think I would get out of a building….right? I have no clue what I would do if I was in a car and the road started shaking. Anyone know?

I do know what to do in case of a tornado. I can spot a wall cloud. I know to get out of a car and into a ditch if driving down the road.

I was even in a tornado once a couple years ago. It wasn’t an especially strong one…although it did knock our front tree into our house and make the garage door on our metal building bow into a “‘v.” I was home alone with our dogs and cats (which I took down to the basement with me) until the tornado passed.

I’d like to hear your natural disaster stories…and if anyone can give me some earthquake advise, I’d really appreciate it!

I lived through the Northridge earthquake in LA 16 or 17 years ago. We were taking a long week-end in San Diego and couldn’t get home for 2 days because large sections of the main highways had collapsed. We had to take a train for months afterward to get to work. You make the most of it. The best part of an earthquake is that it’s quick. With Tornado watches and hurricane warnings you kind of know they are coming for hours on end and the waiting is stressful, most of the time for not.

I have no idea what to do in an earthquake either. One time when I lived in Austin there was an earthquake, but it was so small I thought it was just a big truck going by the library. I do know what to do if there’s a hurricane–evacuate. If you don’t evacuate, you “hunker down.” ;-)

Have never been in a tornado, but yes to a hurricane, yes to an earthquake.

    So here you, Cindy!

I have never been in an earthquake and I have no idea what to do. I remember watching an episode of Saved By The Bell years ago, when they had an earthquake and everyone had to get under a desk or stand in a doorway. Not too sure how accurate this is but it’s all I have to go on.

As for other disasters, I live in Central Florida and we are constantly worried about hurricanes. A few years ago we had a particularly bad season. We got hit with 3 hurricanes within a month and a half. During the first hurricane we actually lost power for a week. Some lost power for 2 weeks. It was horrible because it was in August which is our worst month for heat and it did an insane amount of damage. I remember the store I worked in at the time wouldn’t let us come back for a week because they had to replace the roof. Then when we came back we had to get rid of most of our merchandise because it was damaged.

As for tornadoes luckily we don’t get too many. Though about 10 years ago we had a pretty bad storm that caused a few to tare through parts of my neighborhood. Actually my boyfriend’s house was just missed by it. It was going to hit and at the last second jumped to the other side of the street. Crazy!

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

I seem to be in a “be prepared” mood so your advice is much appreciated.
