Call me boring but I can’t remember going to an actual dress-up Halloween party in recent years. I’d say I’d like to be invited to one, but I wouldn’t have any idea what to wear.
In fact, the last time I remember dressing up was when I was about thirteen (and a little )too old for trick-or-treating)…but a friend asked me to go and I went and came away with a whole pillow case full of candy.
When our daughter was in grade school we hosted a Halloween party for her and her friends every year. At that time we lived in town but had a huge backyard (almost an acre of land) that backed up to a field. Our house was a walk-out with a huge picture window on the lower level. After carving pumpkins (each girl always got her own pumpkin to carve and even got to take the pumpkin knife home with her) we played a bunch of games. Then my husband would slip out and put on a scary mask. Then, with a flashlight tucked under his chin, he’d peer in through that picture window where the girls sat watching a movie.
The girls would all shriek and run, only to seconds later want to go outside to get the monster. Who said little girls aren’t courageous? lol
I’d be interested in hearing your Halloween memories. Each person who comments between now and 9 pm Sunday will be entered into a drawing to win a free book.
Check back after 9 pm on Sunday to see if you’ve won…
Can’t wait to hear your stories!

I remember the days of the pillow case. We lived in the city and walked for hours filling that thing up. There was always the legend of the creepy guy who put razor blades in apples and candy bars. Nowadays people only let their kids go to a few houses. I still let my daughter collect as much candy as she wants, but most of it will get donated (either to my adopted soldiers in Afghanistan or some similar program).

Cindy, my favorite childhood Halloween memory is when my mother and neighbor challenged us three girls to walk through the Colonial cemetery in our town. We hiked up the hill, telling each other we weren’t scared. Meanwhile, Mom and Carol had raced around to the other side of the cemetery and hidden themselves behind a crypt. They leaped out and scared the living daylights out of us…we girls ran down that hill so fast! Took us years to get over it…wicked fun!

Cute picture Cindy! A couple years ago, we went to dinner and a guy in an orange jail jumpsuit came over to the table. I nearly leapt out of my chair before I realized he was the waiter, lol. The only thing funnier would have been a parking valet in an orange jail jumpsuit. Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween, the dressing up part and collecting candy. I remember my mom telling me to safe some for later but I often ate all the candy in one go. I then had a stomach ache but it was awesome to eat so many forbidden goodies.
I remember one year when I was a Spanish dancer. Really liked those skirts with all the ruffles on it, mine was bright red. I twirled a lot and was even allowed to wear some real make-up so I felt very much like a lady. I have a picture of the outfit and every time I look at it I smile.

Oh, I just love Halloween. I have such wonderful memories from my childhood, but I can already tell that my memories of the Halloweens when my kids are young will surpass all of those. It’s just such a great time for kids. They love it so much!

I just remember going out as a teenager and scaring little kids and doing other things teenagers do on Halloween…
I’m hoping in a few years I’ll have some family Halloween memories.

One of my favorite memories is the first time we got to dress up for the party at school. That was my first costume party and I was so excited and wasn’t disappointed at all with all the candy that I got.

The one year that sticks in my mind is when I was about 10 – already my parents thought I was too old. It was a horrible rainy, stormy night and they didn’t want me to go out but I cried buckets of tears (candy was scarce in our house lol. Finally my mom relented and I dressed in my dad’s clothes as a hobo. All we ever used were paper bags (pillow cases hadn’t come into it as yet or plastic) and we lived on this terrible hill. In any given year we probably only went to a couple dozen houses due to all the many steps. Well I guess I was at the top of the hill when the inevitable happened – a hole in the bag. What I remember most are the apples rolling down the street. I didn’t care since I was able to save most of the candy and the pennies lol.

My favorite Halloween memory is of my brother and I going all over the small town we lived in and making a haul on goodies. This was back in the time when you could take homemade popcorn balls, caramel apples, cookies, and all kinds of baked stuff. It’s truly a shame we can’t do that anymore.

I remember the fun of running around the neighborhood begging for candy. We didn’t have any school related parties. Too pagan a ritual? Right before I started HS is when someone put a razor blade in an apple and after that every year the candy had to be x-rayed. Why do sickos have to destroy the fun in kid’s lives?
My freshman year of HS I went to a party. I’m not creative so I wore a hand me down sport’s outfit of my brothers.
The Halloween gene skipped me, however, it’s my daughter’s favorite holiday and she goes crazy decorating and she has a huge annual party!
