I’m currently about halfway through the third book of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. I started the first book in the series exactly a month ago. I loved it. Cried my eyes out. The day before I sent my oldest off to kindergarten, I bought the movie on iTunes and loved it too. I finished the second book over the weekend and immediately started the third. I should be working today (I actually have books of my own to write) and all I want to do is plow ahead with the third book and maybe even the fourth.
At some point this morning, I realized maybe my Kindle is not emotionally healthy for me. Maybe it’s not a good thing that I read all the books in a series without ever leaving my sofa. With actual books, I would have had to go to a bookstore. Or at least answer the door when the UPS guy dropped off the box from Amazon. Plus, the Geek would have seen me holding the different books, arched an eyebrow and asked, “How many books are in that series?” while sniffing indigently at the mystry leftovers from the freezer.
But as it is, with the Kindle, I can finish The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, and order the next book at three in the morning and he’ll never know. It’s like living next door to your crack dealer. Or like having half a cheesecake in your fridge and knowing no one else will notice if a slice goes missing. Or two slices.
I know there are people who are disciplined enough that they never give the cheesecake a thought. These are probably the same people who enter marathons for fun.
I am not such a person. I need accountability. When things are really bad, I’ve been known to leave books in the mailbox for the day. (My mailbox is at least a three minute walk from the front door. If I can find the willpower to walk the book out there, I can usually get work done for the day. But today it’s raining and I don’t trust my mailbox not to leak. Sometimes I put books in the freezer (a la Joey and Little Women). But I don’t trust the freezer not to kill my Kindle. So I had to rely on short battery life of my aging Kindle. Thank goodness someone moved the plug while vacuuming. I should be good through the rest of the afternoon.
What about you? Do you ever have to hide your books from yourself?
Tell me where you hide your books and I’ll pick one person to win a copy of Winning it All, my August book.

Emily, you are too funny. No, I don’t hide books from myself, but I know what you mean. If I have a JD Robb book in the house, I will read it. If I’m busy, I don’t buy one of her books because I know I’ll ignore what I need to be doing. I am also a little addicted to audio books. I almost always have one on my ipod, but the only time I can listen is when I go for a walk with the baby. So today it was raining, but I convinced myself it was just drizzling so I could walk and listen to the audio book! The stroller has a rain cover…

Oh, I love audio books too! I’ve been know to drive endlessly around the neighborhood when I’m near the end of a good book. (I listen in the car.)
I just finished Girl, 15, Charming but Insane. It was too cute! Obviously, I’ve been on a YA kick lately.

I never hide my books, but I will go a different route in the house to purposefully not pass by the bookshelf they are on. Some have been sitting there for so long, and they call and call to me; they also don’t understand why others get chosen before them. Scary, huh? I like the instant gratification of my Kindle, too, though. Say I’m trying out a new author, finish the first book in the series and desperately have to start the next one before I can imagine doing anything else? A couple clicks and I’m there (and, of course, no one is the wiser). I don’t think anyone in my house pays attention to my paperbacks. My husband asked me last night if I was still reading the one that I had said was really, really good and couldn’t put down. yeah, that was like, three books ago (and only 2 days, but who’s counting!).

I don’t hide my books but I know the feeling. I would completley ignore my kids if I did not have some awesome willpower on my own. I try to read at night after the kids are in bed and chores are done. I hear Teresa Medeiros’s new book, the Devil wears Plaid right now. It’s calling my name its hard to ignore the temptation. I’ll just have to wait till tonight to see what Jamie is up to! Thanks for sharing today!

I don’t really hide the books, I just put them on the top shelf. So if I want to get anything down, I have to get a stool.

Too funny !! I don’t hide my books from myself and maybe I should! It is all too easy to pick up a book and start reading when there are bookshelves in EVERY room in the house (including the bathrooms!) Maybe I should just get a deep freeze and cram as many books into it as I can. Then padlock it. And give the key to my critique partner in Oklahoma so I would have to get in the car and drive from Alabama to Oklahoma to get the key (which she wouldn’t give me.) That way I would not spend time reading when I SHOULD be writing. Sigh!

I don’t INTENTIONALLY hide my books, but then I have been known to forget where I left one. LOL I don’t have an ebook reader. I stubbornly patronize the actual paperbooks and love visiting a bookstore. I hate to think that ebooks might put bookstores out of business. I always end up buying books I never would have thought about if I hadn’t discovered them at the bookstore.

I’ve never hidden books from myself. There are times when I think it would have been beneficial to hide the books so that I can get things done.

I tried the dead battery thing. However, now Kindle has an app for the iPod. It is rare that both of them are down for the count at the same time.
I have not tried placing the Kindle in the fridge but the pantry works. However, putting it on another floor works best. I put the Kindle on another floor (basement, upstairs) when I’m working around the house. That way I have a longer commute to actually pick it up to read.
I find laziness, when used appropriately, is a great hinderance to over-reading.

The Kindle can be very dangerous. I have to stop and remmind myself I’m still spending money even if I’m not leaving my couch. Not long ago I devoured a trilogy and didn’t hesitate on the Buy button.

I have my favorite books hidden in a large closet that I took over with shelving for my favs. Out of sight…out of mind. Okay you caught me…doesn’t always work, but it sounded good right? I run a home day care and have a 2 1/2 year old son so the only time I get to read is the peaceful 2 hours of nap time and before bed. However on occasion I have kicked my hubby out for a day and told him to go have some father son bonding time. I can read a good book nonstop in perfect peace and quiet…it’s heaven for a nonstop mom/daycare provider. He wins the hubby award on those days! There would be no hiding the kindle if I had one…instant access to whatever book I wanted? I’d be in trouble not to mention the danger for my checkbook as Romantic Girl mentioned. My husband would be grounding me! LOL

I don’t hide my books either. I do have a kindle on my laptop. Since my laptop goes everywhere I go, I always have a book. When I get into a really good book, I will jump up and do short bursts of housework and then go back to my book. It goes something like this; cook breakfast, read, wash breakfast dishes, read, wash laundry, read.
Ya’ll get the point. I agree that being able to get books anytime is like crack! My husband doesn’t understand why I always have my face in a book.
