It seems like I have a lot going on at the moment, although I don’t, really. Not compared to when my three kids were young and I was working as a nurse and my husband had an hour-long commute every day…each way! The household is just busy because all of my kids have been home for the summer. It’s temporary, though. Withhin weeks, the kids will have moved out and the house will be mine again.
Which is a mixed blessing, right? We certainly enjoy having them around, but we like our own space, too.
It got me thinking about the things that make me happy. Invariably, they’re little things. Some are tied to memories, some are just the pure pleasures of the moment. for example, when I see a young mom carrying one small child and herding two others, I remember the days when I was doing that. It’s a warm memory, even though those were hectic times. I always want to reassure those moms that things will get easier – at least for a while. (Of course I’ll hold back what I know about teenagers).
I enjoy the fall – the changes in temperatures, the cozy mornings in bed before the sun comes up, the colors. Most people I know say they prefer the heat of summer, but not me. I love the fall.
Then there are my dogs. They’re a couple of gorgeous labradors – one black, one yellow. And they’re sweet and affectionate,
and look at you as though there was no one else in the world. You can’t help but smile when they make a mad dash for the water – doing what they were bred to do – swim! The best part? Walking hand in hand with my husband while the dogs play with each other.
Writing. It’s a pleasure that non-writers probably can’t understand. But there is nothing like writing a scene that is just right – and knowing it!
Having the whole family pitch in while I cook a big meal and then all sit down to enjoy it together. (Just kidding – that’s not us at the left). My husband and I both grew up in large families where we all had dinner together, no matter what kind of activities we were into. And we managed to do that with our family, even though there was always a lot going on. Somehow, we made it work.
What are the little things that give you joy? Inquiring minds want to know!

Like you it’s the little things that make me happy. First and always my family is what makes me happy. We’ve also always had dinners together. Not so much now because the kids are now in their 20′s and it’s rare we are together at dinner time, so now every Sunday between 12 and 12:30 we meet for lunch – sometimes it’s something as simple as taco bell but it may as well be a feast because having us all at the table chatting about our week is wonderful for me. Our gardens, we picked the first peach off of our tree the other day, yummy.
A beautiful blue sky, flowers, hearing a child laugh ALWAYS makes me happy because that makes me laugh! After 31 years my hubby still makes me very happy. A quiet walk, a lunch with friends… so much to be happy and grateful for – even with all that goes on in this world we live in!

I love when my kids come into bed with me. They’re 14 and 11 now, so most days they sleep later than I do (in the summer, anyway), and the fact that they still want to cuddle makes me so happy!

Tons of little things! Sleeping until 7 a.m. (like we did this morning) is heaven. When my baby laughs so hard she gets hiccups. When the humidity drops and it starts to feel like Fall or when the first warm weather blows in and it feels like Spring. Those things make me happy.
Oh, and finishing a book. That’s the BEST feeling.

Watching my neighbor’s mama ducks herd their babies across the road while everyone waits for them to cross. There is something about seeing goofy smiles on the faces of good old boys in pickup trucks as they watch those cuties cross the dirt road where I live.
My dogs when they jump on the bed to wake me up and all sit in a row as if to say “Hey, Mom! We’re up! And we have to go OUT!” I love their goofy faces and the genuine joy they exude every minute of the day. And when they sleep all piled up on the couch together it makes me smile.
My outside dogs make me smile when I come home because they are always SO glad to see me when I get home.
Writing dialogue that makes me laugh.
Seeing the look of wonder on a child’s face when we show them their birthday cake for the first time. The Four Disney Princesses Castle cake is ALWAYS a big hit.

Nice blog, Margo!
My daughter is very busy with school and band now, even though it’s only the start of the second week. I love the time we have to sit down together and chat. She’ll tell me about her day, the things that are on her mind –and the boy she likes. It gives me great joy that even though she’s well into her teens, she still talks to me.

I love reading to my kids each night. I love reading a book that’s so good I can’t put it down. I love the quiet in the house when everyone else is napping — that’s rare enough that I probably can’t list it as a little thing but rather a huge thing! I had two nappers for about 30 minutes. It was pure bliss. And I love it when my husbands calls and says, “Hey do you want me to pick up dinner on the way home?”

I really enjoy having dinner with my husband and daughter every night. We always have this meal together even if our week is hectic. I love when my kitty cries to be picked up, then, purring in my arms, brushes my hair with his big fuzzy paws and licks my neck as though to say “I love you SO much!” Hugs from my teenage daughter are super special, and also when she calls me over to share with me a new drawing she’s done or a funny video she’s found online.
