Technology–what would you give up?

cell

I went to a play on Friday night at the local community playhouse. It was called The Lady With All the Answers. This one-woman play was on advise columnist Ann Landers. It took place in 1975. Fabulous play. Before it started, the person from the theaters asked everyone to silence “all those devices that weren’t around in 1975.”

That got me to thinking of all the technology that has developed in the past 35 years. We have cell phones, computers, iPods, DVD players, call waiting, GPS systems etc.

Of course thinking of all the advances made me wonder if I had to give up just one, what would I give up? For sure it wouldn’t be the computer? Type my manuscripts on a electric typewriter or word processor? No way. Cell phone, call waiting HAVE to stay…and I have to admit I love my Garmin Nuvi (GPS). If I had to give something up it would have to be the iPod.

How about you? If you had to give something up…what would it be and why would you pick that item (as opposed to something else).

If I had to give one thing up it would be the cell phone. I don’t use it much now and do remember when I could go to the grocery store or run errands and not need it. It drives me crazy to walk through stores or have people shopping in mine and hear them talk about what their doctor said or hear an argument or hear them yelling at their kids…. just things that I really don’t want to know. and it makes me crazy to see anyone talking and driving… so for me it’s easy it would be the cell phone. And anyway no way could I give up anything else! :)

I’d easily give up the GPS…I love maps, and I even kind of like getting lost every now and then.

I think I’d go with the GPS.

I don’t have a GPS, so I can’t give that up. Maybe my ipod? I wouldn’t give up my cell phone. Found a babysitter at 10 p.m. on Friday night for next week by texting. If we didn’t have texting or cell phones, who knows when I would have gotten a hold of my potential sitters? But you know even if they’re out, they’ll check text messages.

My home answering system. The recordings we find there now are about saving 2% on something or other. Or political campaign messages. Anybody who really needs me can call my cell.

I´d throw out the TV. We could spend the time we waste in
front of the telly on something infinately more productive and family friendly.

I don’t have GPS, I don’t have an iPod, I don’t have call waiting. My cell phone is always off so it’s not a good source for others to reach me but I do like having it in case of an emergency. I don’t have an answering machine at home (but I do have caller ID). I don’t know what I’d give up. Maybe my DVR? It’d be hard to get used to not having it but it’s definitely something I could live without, if I had to. I’d be fine with not having caller ID too, if no one else had it either.

Actually I could probably give up most of it and be fine. I DO love my computer as it makes writing my novels easier, doing research easier and keeping in touch with my friends and family easier.

My cell phone is strictly for roadside emergencies and my critique partner (who informs me that any time she calls me it’s an emergency! )

I don’t have a GPS or an Ipod or an eReader or an Iphone or anything else. And since the switch to digital I don’t receive any television channels either. I live too far out for cable and I don’t have satellite. I do watch movies and I buy the television series I like by the season on DVD. However, if I had to I could live without them. I have a house full of books to read and a head full of books to write!

Now, if I had an electronic device that could do housework you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands to get it away from me!

I’d have to go with GPS. Though I could dump the TV and not miss it much. And I rather miss the days when I wasn’t chained to a phone – but now with kids, I find I want to be reachable. Last to go would be my laptop – I can’t imagine writing any other way.
