Happy Birthday to me!

Today is my birthday. I’m thirty-phftts years old.
No, no. I swore never to do that. My mother was thirty-nine for years. My grandmother, for decades. She’s still only fifty-two. Honest.
As a child, I always thought that was ridiculous. Why bother lying about your age? Instead, why not just live a good life, enjoy it, and be proud of the time you’ve spent on this earth?
But now that my daughter is starting Kindergarten, it makes a little more sense to me. I had my kids late in life, so I’m older than most of the other moms. A week ago, standing in the sweltering sun on the playground at the welcome-back “play date” with all the other moms in their late 20′s, I did feel a pang of longing for my own early-adulthood. And for my eyesight. (Not that my eyesight was ever great, but geez, at least I could always read a menu.)
But even if I’m not as young and perky as some of the other moms, I have lived a good life and I’m happy with how I spent every one of my thirty-nine years. Mostly. If I could apply for a rebate on thirty-two, I might be tempted. Nevertheless, on this particular day, I’m very happy with my life. I made Mojito cupcakes for my birthday. The Geek took me for an elegant dinner last night and bought me two cute purses for my present. I’m having lunch with good friends. And I have plans to watch chick-flicks all weekend long. Happy birthday indeed!

I’ll pick one person who comments to share in the birthday joy with a copy of my August release, His Accidental Fiancee.

Happy Birthday Emily. Sounds like you are having a great time of it. Mojito Cupcakes? Oh please, post the recipe…they sound really good. My birthday is coming in November…might just make some for myself since Rum is my favorite in anything! I am not one to lie about my age (I’m 66)…I’ve worked hard for every year I’ve spent on this earth and I plan on many more!

    Happy Birthday, Emily !!

I just continue to celebrate the anniversary of my 29th birthday over and over again. In December I will celebrate the 23 anniversary of my 29th birthday ! Still, I am not unhappy with my age. It has taken me this long to get comfortable in my skin and I like it!!

    Enjoy your day !!

Happy Birthday!! I had my one and only child at 36 (after 11 yrs of trying!) and it’s very strange that the majority of my friends have kids in college. So, I know exactly where you’re coming from :!:

I hear you on the older mom thing. I went to meet my little one’s teachers this morning and think I was older than all the other moms, dads, and the teachers! Oh, well, the kids will keep you young, right?

A very Happy Birthday, Emily!! I too had my children later in life and was always the oldest mom and since I never dyed my hair, there was no hiding it lol. I had a white stripe in my black hair before 30. I was married 15 years before having kids (it took some convincing for my husband). I think what I regret most is that they missed knowing most of their grandparents (my mom is 88 though) and I’m still waiting for grandchildren while my sister has 7 (by one daughter) with the oldest 16 and youngest just 3.

The hardest birthday for me was turning 40. It hit me right between the eyes. My kids were occupying all my time. Life flew by!

Shoot, Emily, I’m a day late! Happy birthday, and yes, drag it out for the whole weekend. I’ve never minded getting older (well, not yet anyway). That being said, I alone support the anti-aging face cream industry! Hope you have a great day!
