I am not much of a TV watcher. I just can’t force myself to commit to a particular date and time every week. I do catch a few shows periodically – shows that don’t require the viewer to have seen every episode in order. Mostly, I just see sports – hockey games and basketball play-offs. Even some golf. ( I know – ugh! – right?)
But wow – I just discovered something I was missing for two seasons. Actually, I’m sort of glad I did miss the first two seasons. Because it’s on “On Demand” now, and I’ve been able to watch one episode every day for the past two weeks. No waiting for next Sunday at 10 PM (or is it 9:00? – I’ll have to check.)
When I was in NYC last fall, my editors were raving about this show. I’d heard of it, but didn’t really have time for it then. But I turned in a book two weeks ago, so I had some free time and decided to check it out.
I’m not a huge vampire fan (although I have nothing against them
) but now I understand
why my editors were raving about True Blood. They were enthused about the story, the characters, the conflict. There are great, three-dimensional characters in True Blood, and a plot that just won’t quit. Or I should say – several plot lines – that keep you guessing. Best of all, I’ve found an amazing prototype for the hero of the book I’m working on now. How did I miss this guy? Stephen Moyer is his name, and he plays the protagonist vampire. (You guys probably all knew about him years ago, but well … I’m just a bit slow on the uptake, I guess!)
I don’t think I’ve ever found a picture of anyone who so perfectly fits the idea I’ve got in my head of one of my characters - Stephen Moyer is exactly the kind of brooding, damaged character who is the hero of my February book – Seducing the Governess. He was injured at Waterloo, and returns home to his estate after he becomes earl, and has to sort out the mess there – including finding a proper teacher for his orphaned niece. Enter the heroine – although I have yet to find the perfect picture of her. I’ll keep at it, though. Maybe you can help me out. She’s an average-sized, dark-haired beauty, but she was the prim daughter of a vicar. What do you think? Any suggestions?

You know, I’ve never watched this show. Everybody raves about it but I just haven’t been able to get interested in giving it a try. Lets see, for your heroine how about Detective Beckett from the Castle series. She has an odd name and I can’t remember the last one. I think her first name is Stana.

I’ve caught a couple episodes but just couldn’t get into it. partly — I’m just not into the vampire story thing, don’t really see the appeal. partly — not good a making that commitmment to catching a show on a consistant basis (only can do that for a few shows and those slots are already filled). and last, partly — there not self contained episodes, more continuing series which means you need to catch each episode to know whats going on (see prior reason).

Margo – do you know that the show True Blood is taken from books by Charlaine Harris? Dead Until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead.. etc think there are 11 of them now.
As far as your heroine – I don’t watch a lot of tv either but one dark haired beauty is Vanessa Marcil… but she is TINY not average size but still so darn pretty!

I’ve never watched True Blood. I’ve heard it is really good.
Not many dark haired females on tv. Maybe Julia Roberts could darken her hair a bit.

Yes – I know they’re based on the Charlaine Harris books – but loosely based, I think. (I haven’t had a chance to read them).
Donna Ann – I caught part of an episode when True Blood first started, and didn’t get into it. For some reason, it’s got me totally hooked now!

I love True Blood but I don’t have HBO or On-Demand service so I have to wait until it comes out on DVD. Second season just released a couple of weeks ago; still have about 1/2 the season to watch…and it is so-o-o good.
Other programs that are worth watching are Mad Men (AMC, 3rd season starts 7-25 @ 10PM)and Dexter on Showtime.
Finally, how about Keira Knightly as your heroine?

I’ve watched a few episodes but missed a lot as well. Some of the scene’s with blood involved are a bit too much for me. I know it’s not real but it looks realistic and I don’t like the red stuff. The actors are great though and Stephen is real cute.

I love True Blood! I also loved Charlaine Harris’ series, which is why I originally watched the show. I was so excited that the books were going to be adapted to a TV series it was crazy. I agree–the first couple episodes were kind of hard for me to get into. I really wasn’t used to HBO’s really graphic sex scenes, and some of the characters seemed over the top. However, after a few episodes I absolutely loved it, and loved it in a different way from the books. The show doesn’t try to “copy” the books, and there are some pretty big differences, but I think they did the best possible job adapting it. The books are just so funny and sweet–it would be hard to make the entire series that way. Also, my mom hates vampire stuff and over the top sex, but after a few episodes she was hooked too!

Till 9:30, various juniors are up so that rules out a lot of shows, and after tends to be my computer time – so the only shows I watch are some reality based ones. Like right now, World Cup. Holy smokes, why aren’t there more soccer literary heros? These men all look impossibly fit.

Haven’t seen “True Blood” yet and will probably have to buy it on DVD or rent it. I think Rose Byrne from “Damages” and “Troy” might be great for your heroine or maybe Emmy Rossum from “Phantom of the Opera.”

The Professor and I buy the DVD seasons when they come out (cause we don’t have HBO), in fact we’re waiting on season 2 to be delivered any day now. I read the books too and think the show is sexy and smart and oh-so-fun.
As for your heroine, I’d say look at pictures of Rachel Weisz, or Minnie Driver or a brunette Rachel McAdams.

Is Anne Hathaway too tall for your governess? She seems like she could come off as very prim and proper.

I like the idea of her being brunette and I would give her piercing green eyes. A kind smile and have her be a little over weight. My first thought when you said she was a vicor’s daughter was that her mom was no longer around/dead and that she cooked the meals. And if she did that she might be a bit more plump then the typical heroin. She would have seen the many types of people her father incountered in his job, both good and bad, so she has eyes that are piercing like she can see the truth in every person she meets. And a kind smile because even though she knows people’s true nature, she still has faith in them being ultimately good. Hope that helps.
