My Portable Office

I’m writing the (first draft of) this post longhand at a café table next to a fountain. I’m sipping a cappuccino (triple shot, nonfat, with a healthy cap of cinnamon powder) digging the white noise of the spouting water and musing about how cool it is that today this is my office.

One of the best perquisites of writing for a living is the portable office.

I’ve gotten to the point where I can write almost anywhere… as long as I have my laptop or pen and paper and a temperate climate (subtext: 75 degrees or lower, thank you very much.  I’m an agreeable employee, but my muse goes on strike at the first bead of perspiration).

I’ve written in airports; in the car on road trips as my husband drove ( one of my favorite “office days.”  Funny though, he wasn’t keen on the idea of driving me around on a daily basis while I wrote… can you believe it? Not even after I tossed out the words team player… ). I’ve written at the mall as my daughter and her friends shopped; during youth orchestra rehearsals; on school field trip busses; during horseback riding lessons and ballet classes. I’ve actually finished more than one book at the beach (yes, in a bathing suit, ten yards from the surf – casual office days).

I must confess: this bonus didn’t come built into the job; it evolved out of necessity as I tried to maximize my productivity without sacrificing too much family time (though all bets are off when I’m on deadline). After I realized I could be productive working outside of my writing cave a funny thing happened…it dawned on me I needn’t be tied to my conventional office chair at my cumbersome desktop computer… that sometimes, even when necessity didn’t dictate, a change of venue was refreshing and quite pleasing to the old temperamental muse.

On another note, a quick reminder: don’t forget that beginning Monday (June 14), we’re kicking off our contest to win a free Sony E-Reader. All you have to do to win is comment on the blogs you read here every day. Each time you comment you’re entered. A winner will be randomly picked from all those who comment between Monday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 30. So the more you comment, the more chances you have to win! Keep visiting and keep commenting.

You can start warming up by telling us where’s the most interesting place your job has taken you, or if you’re a writer, where’s your favorite place to set up your portable office?

Be sure to check out Nancy Robards Thompson’s Silhouette Special Edition, Accidental Father. RT Book Reviews gives it 4 ½ stars and says: “…This heartwarming story with strong, genuine characters and a strong plot to match is definitely hard to put down.” Available July 2010.

My job has taken me all over the globe, but I have to say one of the most interesting places was a jaunt through India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bhavnagar, and Ahmedabad). While there are social and cultural differences everywhere, I found India to be the most pronounced. I didn’t particularly care for it, but was still amazed at how different it is.

Oh,heck, reading your post, Nancy, I realized I’m…a diva! I only like to write at home, on the laptop, or at our place on the Cape. I can’t imagine trying to write in public…or in the car, my goodness! Good for you.

    Congratulations on the great review!

Well, I’m a teacher, so my job has taken me on field trips within an hour’s ride of the school, LOL. My 5th Graders and I go to Living History Farms; it is a working museum. This spring the kids had a good time at the 1850s farm because they were able to watch one of the presenters work with a team of oxen.

I have also taken a class to DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge on the Missouri River and seeing eagles, snow geese, and other birds during their fall migration was amazing.

As a long time teacher (who is now retired) I’ve been to several interesting places as a chaperone ~~ VeraCruz, Mexico aboard a training vessel owned by the Mexican Navy ~~ Washington, DC (several times) aboard a school bus and on the same trip we made Jamestown (the original in Virginia), Philadelphia, and other stops along the way.

I have written on a car trip, but I found the dang sun in my eyes a distraction, that and my husband chattering. So Not anymore, I keep the writing at home, guess I have no sense of adventure, LOL!
    Great post!

Kris – sounds like you have an interesting job!

Kristan – You, diva, you! ;) Just keep doing what you’re doing because it’s working. Your books are fabulous!

Deb – What a wonderful way to help the kids learn. Hands-on lessons make such an impact. Plus, I’m sure the kids enjoy a day away from the classroom.

Eap – Thank you! I’ve had to train myself to focus and not people watch – one of the hazards of going out and about. But the upside is usually I’m away from the internet and that’s sometimes a bigger temptation. :)

Ellen – You’re a saint if you spent extended hours on a school bus. I chaperoned a class trip to St. Augustine, FL when my daughter was in 4th grade. We took a school bus sans air conditioning … that was one trip where my muse went on strike. Now, give me a comfy charter bus and I can write all day.

Karyn – I must qualify that my husband was very quiet while I was writing. Plus, I was listening to my iPod. If you think you’re not adventurous, I’m probably not a very good travel companion. ::o:

I wish I was a little more versatile. I like to write at my desk, but I write at Starbucks when need be (like today).

I don’t travel anywhere exotic with my job. I am so jealous of your ability to work anywhere. How fun!!

I’ve never traveled abroad for my job. The farthest I went for work was to another borough.

I used to go to the park when I was younger to write, but now that I’m older, time doesn’t allow and it’s harder for the body to find comfortable places/ways to sit!
