It’s my husband’s birthday today. Happy 34th birthday, honey!
And here’s a weird thing. It’s also my ex-boyfriend’s birthday. I think I learned once, in an intro psychology class, that 1 in 40 people have the same birthday. Math types have argued with me when I quote this statistic, but when they sit down and do all the calculations, they usually figure out it’s pretty close to accurate. That doesn’t mean if you meet 40 people, one will have your birthday. It just means if you get 40 people together, chances are pretty darn good two of them will share a birthday.
Sharing a birthday with someone gives you an instant connection. I was born on December 25, and anyone who shares that birthday can automatically sympathize with the plight those of us with Christmas birthdays face. If I could choose my birthday, I would choose June 25. That’s six months from Christmas. That way I would get presents at equal intervals. I wouldn’t have to wait all year for December 25th to come around again.
Here’s another thing about birthdays—they affect your life more than you realize. My daughter was born at the end of September, and when I went to enroll her in a little day school program at our church for a day or two a week starting this Fall, I realized she will be the oldest in her class. I also realized she will always be the oldest in her class. I have several friends pregnant and due in early August. Their children will be in the same grade as my little one. How crazy is that? Their babies haven’t even been born yet, while mine is already sitting and eating applesauce and green beans. You can’t tell me that doesn’t translate into some advantage or disadvantage.
Here’s the disadvantage—my daughter will be about 20 days from being 5 when Kindergarten starts, but will she be able to begin Kindergarten? No, she’ll have to wait almost an entire year. But kids who might have turned 5 only 3 days before will start before her. That’s just crazy, I think. But I guess there has to be a cut-off, and no matter when it falls, some kid with some birthday will be on the winning or losing side. And I’m sure it all evens out by second or third grade, anyway.
What do you think about your birthday? Has it been a blessing or a curse? If you could choose your birthday, what day would you choose?

I love my birthday–it’s in April during Fiesta San Antonio–it’s like the whole city is celebrating
I’m a 4th grade teacher and I held back 2 girls with summer birthdays because they just didn’t have the maturity as the other kids. My son, however, was a summer birthday, one of the youngest in his class, and was very advanced. My best friend’s child has a September 2 birthday and since the cut-off is September 1, he’ll be 6 years old for most of kindergarten.

Every few years my birthday falls on Thanksgiving day. As a result, no one ever remembers my birthday. And when I was younger, it even got overlooked by family. Not that they forgot it but it was always inconvenient for them to recognize. Making it worse was, I have a sister whose birthday is ten days before mine and she always had a big blow out event for her birthday. Then mine came along and nothing. Hard not to be bothered by that.
I think holiday babies should get to designate a day for their birthdays, apart from the holidays so forever more, your birthday will be June 25th to me. It’s coming up soon so, you got your list ready?

I love my birthday…May 1st. I was born on my uncle’s 8th birthday (though he really wanted a bike, not a niece). That being said, I always feel a bit like a glutton, because Mother’s Day is always the next weekend, so I get a little tired of me, if you know what I mean. As for school, both my kids are on the older side, Shane, and it’s been a huge advantage.
Happy Birthday, Shane’s Husband!

I love my birthday, too. It’s in September—September 11. That was the only terrible birthday I had, 9-11, you know. My age has never bothered me except when I was 28 and all I could think about was turning 30 in 2 years. But, I’m 46 now, have a beautiful daughter, a great husband, and a wonderful family.
I was one of the older kids in my class all through school, but not by much. My daughter should be in 4th grade, but I had her attend Pre-K and it was THE BEST decision I could have made for her. She grew socially and academically. She will always be older than her schoolmates (she turned 10 a few weeks ago) and will be 19 when she graduates from high school. But, I still stand by my decision of sending her to Pre-K.

Yeah, know what you mean about the date — while I’m three days before you, the 22nd is exactly as bad as Christmas. And then having sis’s birthday exactly a week before you. So, alas, always having a party early, and sometimes sharing presents. . . yep, know what you mean. LOL

We have a whole bunch of birthdays close together in my family. March 28-Apr5-Apr23. But one son and I are later in the year. He’s Aug5 an I’m Oct6th. I love having a fall birthday! It’s probably why I developed my deep fondness for the fall. As a kid my birthday was such a big deal. Now? Not so much.

I’m a fall baby too, Oct 8, and I loved being the older one in class growing up. I was one of the few in my class that had turned 18 and got to vote for President my senior year. I even got to serve on a jury…pretty cool things at 18.

My birthday is near Thanksgiving (Nov. 29th) and like Laura it gets overlooked. Stick a candle in the pumpkin pie! My sister has a June birthday so she got the parties. Boy I sound bitter lol.

My birthday’s in July, and I actually really like having a summer birthday. My daughter’s is Hallowe’en. That wasn’t anywhere near her actual due date, but she decided that was the day she was going to be born.
And she loves having a Hallowe’en birthday
My husband’s birthday is in April. It’s actually kind of nice having the special days spread out through the year.
