Anyone hungry for Italian?

I’ve always had a fascination with everything Italian.

And what’s not to love about a country that has miles upon miles of sun-kissed beaches – Italian Riviera, the Amalfi Coast, the Isle of Capri.  Fabulous foods and wines – pizza, risotto, fabulous soups, pastas and a wonderful array of fresh fish dishes.   And the desserts!  Amaretto chocolate mousee, canoli, panne cotta, granita, and tiramisu to name just a few.

And oh so handsome men who have refined flirting to a fine art.  Like Italian footballer and sought after celebritiy Christian Vieri.  The guy has retired from the sport but is still a noted sex icon in Italy.

The hero in my just released romance Innocent in the Italian’s Possession is just as sexy and bold, with an extra dose of masculine pride, arrogance and towering ego tossed in.

Stefano is a forward thinker, a shrewd businessman and fervent ecologist. His views on business clashed with his father’s old-world style of running the family company, and his ego wouldn’t let him play the third role in the business under his brother and father. But though he’s been estranged from his family for years, he immediately comes to his father’s aid when tragedy strikes. And just as quickly he forms the wrong impression of his father’ s personal secretary with immediate ideas of enacting revenge for the wrong he’s convinced she’s done.

Gemma has been the keeper of her boss’s darkest secret for years, a secret that binds them as close as family. When he falls ill and his errant son takes over the family business, she has a terrible choice to make. Let Stefano go on believing she’s his father’s mistress, or tell the truth and risk tearing his family apart.

One thing is certain. When an Italian man sets his sights on seduction, all is fair in love and war!

I love writing and reading about misunderstandings bound by dark secrets and hope you do too. I’m giving away an autographed copy of Innocent in the Italian’s Possession. Just comment below about Italian food, vacations, or Italian men! I’ll pick one name and announce the winner on Sunday.

Janette is thrilled to announce that Innocent in the Italian’s Possession is a Border’s Group top-ten bestselling novel, and a Nielson Bookscan bestselling novel.  She’ll be signing copies of this book and a select few of her historical backlist titles on June 12 at Books A Million in Kansas City. Check her website for exact location and times.

Would it be fun to start over?

Next week, my June release “In Love With John Doe” hits the stands. This is a story about a man who loses his memory in an avalanche. With no ID and no memory he has to start over.

I find the thought intriguing. I wonder what it would be like to wake up and have no memory and no one around to identify you. It would definitely be scary. Where would I go? How would I live?

Thankfully in my book, the hero has social worker Lexi Brennan to help ease the transition. But when he’s finally identified, he learns that he has a whole other life…a life where the heroine may not fit.

And she, being the wonderful heroine that she is, has to let him go so that he can find himself.

When I was writing the end of this book, the words to David Cook’s single…”Come Back to Me,” kept running through my head.

I’ve got a bunch of books to give away this weekend…shall we say five winners from everyone who posts about….the idea of starting over. Would starting over scare you? Excite you? Or ??

What should have been…

So on Tuesday I should have been blogging about my release day for the second in my Legend Hunters trilogy, DESIRE ME. Instead I was in the hospital for the fourth day in a row after having to have an emergency gall bladder surgery. Normally this is a pretty routine procedure, many of them are out-patient. But leave it to me to develop some minor complications. Needless to say it was nothing serious and I’m home now (though wouldn’t you know I now have a sinus infection?!). And did I mention I went into the hospital and had said surgery on my birthday? Okay so the last week was not so great. BUT Tuesday was still release day and while I’m a few days late, here is my celebratory blog featuring the early reviews and an excerpt.

Oh and a special thank you to my fellow Quills who jumped in to pick up the slack for me and especially to Emily for writing such a touching tribute blog. You’re the best, my friend!

Reviews that have come in for DESIRE ME.

“FIVE STARS! I did not just read this story, I inhaled it…Danger, mystery, romance, suspense, and history all blend together with a healthy dose of the Atlantis legend. The result is a book destined for your Keeper shelf.”~Huntress Reviews

“DeHart enlivens the genre with her Legend Hunters series centering on sexy, daring treasure hunters and the alluring women who tame them. With slight fantasy overtones and wild escapades, this is one great ride of a read.” ~RT Bookclub

“DeHart has long been known for her expertise in putting together a very good story. She demonstrates that expertise once again in this novel.” ~BookBinge

“Robyn DeHart’s Legend Hunters series…has quickly become a favorite of mine…a delightful story!” ~TheRomanceDish

“Fast-paced and filled with non-stop action that would have Indiana Jones needing a respite, readers will want to join Max and Sabine as they team up in love and in decoding the map’s riddle before a diabolical killer leaves both of them dead and the Empire in ruins.” ~Harriet Klausner

“…wonderful characters and have such depth of emotion that you know the goal here is to find Atlantis but in the end the quest is for love and you want them to succeed at both.” ~The Reading Reviewer

Excerpt from Chapter Two

Max picked up his hand and glanced at the cards. A lousy combination that on its own would win nothing. It was why he loved this American game, the bluffing. Even with a mediocre hand of cards, he could win.

His table mates were a motley crew, and he had very little difficulty in deciphering when they held good hands or when they knew they would lose. Two of the older gentlemen had made excuses and left the table when the betting had increased. Now only four remained. A grizzled man with a full shock of white hair and a voice deep and cracked. A young man, perhaps one could even consider him still a boy as not even a hint of whiskers appeared on his chin. And the Earl of Chilton sat across from Max, a fine opponent when he wasn’t drinking. Tonight though the man had had one too many sips.

The fourth player was, by far, the most interesting. A woman, dressed in a cream-colored confection with a plunging neckline that left very little to his well-developed imagination. She was the kind of woman one expected to see across a candle-lit ballroom surrounded by suitors, not a smoke-filled gaming hell surrounded by drunken fools. With her lustrous, sable-colored hair and her warm caramel eyes, she was nothing short of stunning. Though her darker complexion led him to believe she wasn’t originally from England, she had no accent to give him a hint of her homeland.

Though he’d never seen her before, she certainly looked like a well-refined lady, but he wasn’t completely convinced. While she had the mannerisms down and the look just right, something was different about her. And he knew he had never seen her before as she was not the sort of woman a man forgot.

Initially Max had found her distracting, but after losing to her two hands in a row, he’d straightened his seat and kept his eyes off her tempting cleavage.

Though she had won more hands than most of the men at the table that night, she was not an accomplished player. However, she proved, at times, difficult to read. Almost as if she were an actress slipping into a role, and while in character, she became charming, flirtatious and daring. But every now and then a veil would slip over her eyes, and Max would catch a glimpse of insecurity. He had yet to decide whether that was from the cards she held or something else.

“I raise,” she said, her voice a warm, fluid honey. She arched a perfect eyebrow in his direction. “My lord,” she said.

Max glanced around the table. He knew from Chilton’s smug expression that the man had a good hand. The old man had already laid down his hand, as had the young one. But what cards did the pretty miss hold?

“Such a temptress,” Max said, never taking his eyes off of her as he dropped his coins into the betting pool. “I’ll call your wager.”

Chilton’s brow furrowed, and he grumbled something incoherent, then backed out of the game. Evidently his hand, as good as it may have been, did not give the inebriated man enough confidence.

They had another quick round of betting before the dealer called for their hands, and Max flipped over his cards. Two pairs to a three of a kind. “The lady wins,” the man said.

With delicate gloved fingers, she scooped the coins in her direction, then stacked them neatly.

Chilton stood. “Enough of this foolish game for me.” He eyed the lady at the table, then looked at Max. “You’ve got a lovely playmate tonight, Lindberg. I believe I’ll retire for the evening,” he said as he slipped away. Though Max spotted him finding a new chair at a different game four tables over.

Max collected his new hand and eyed the cards. As if they had been dealt by a deity, Max looked down on four Kings.

Again the other two gentlemen folded, leaving the hand down to Max and the lady, the mysterious and lovely woman with the caramel-colored eyes. This time though he could not lose. He had a brilliant hand.

She picked up a few coins, then paused over the center pot, glancing at her cards before slowly raised her gaze to his. “A different wager, perhaps.”

Intrigued, Max nodded. “What did you have in mind?” Immediately his mind conjured images of all the sinful acts he could do to her body upon this very table. It would take hours for him to explore every delectable curve. He’d start at that sweet spot directly below her ear along the column of her neck. Then he’d work his way down.

“Your map, Maxwell Barrett. I only want the map,” her words came out slow and deliberate.

Ah, she knew who he was, and she knew about his map.

It was no great secret that he hid away. Still he’d never broadcast it across Society. What would have been the point? It was popular to go in hunt of treasure or artifacts, but there was no scientific proof of the existence of Atlantis.

He’d once thought the map would be the ultimate proof, but no one except the men of Solomon’s had paid much attention to his discovery. So now the relic simply hung on his wall. Why the interest now? And how had she known? Women talked, he knew that. And he’d had more than his fair share of women. And on occasion, he’d had one of them bent over his desk. Though he wouldn’t have guessed many would give much thought to an old map. It would be quite the knock to his pride that one of those women might have noticed any element of his decor when he’d assumed they were more pleasantly engaged.

The idea nearly made him chuckle.

It was on his tongue to inquire as to how she’d heard of his map, but more important was why she wanted it. “What does a beautiful woman such as yourself want with a dusty old map?” he asked.

She smiled, and it transformed her face from merely lovely into something much more. Her sheer beauty was like a kick in the gut.

She tugged on one of her satin gloves. “Perhaps I’m a scholar. Like yourself,” she said with a delicately arched eyebrow.

“I’m an adventurer, not a scholar.” If she legitimately knew anything about him, she’d know that. “And you don’t look any more like a scholar than I do.”

Her shoulders shifted so subtly, one could hardly consider the movement a shrug. “Then perhaps I’m merely curious. Do you accept the wager or not?” she asked.

Max looked back at his cards, then slowly slid his gaze up to her. “Tell me your name.”

She nodded. “Sabine Tobias,” she said.

Somehow in the midst of their exchange, a crowd had developed around their table. Low whispers flitted around as well as the occasional jab directed at Max. If Max wasn’t mistaken, a side wager had been established on who was going to win their hand. That was the one thing you could be certain of in Rand’s Gaming, people were always looking for a wager.

“Well, Miss Tobias,” Max leaned forward and leveled his gaze on her tawny eyes. “What do I get if I win?”

“The pleasure of winning,” she said with a faint smile.

Max shook his head. “I’m not certain that’s enough. How about a kiss?”

The crowd around them cheered. Shock broke through her careful facade, and her eyes widened, but she quickly recovered. “I don’t believe I was offering any kisses,” she said. “How about if you simply get to keep your dusty old map,” she tossed his words back at him.

Perhaps she knew more about him than she’d let on, or perhaps she knew more about the map than the average collector. He’d held onto that map for years despite several high-priced offers from other parties and one attempted theft. The map hadn’t been the conclusive proof he’d once believed it would be. His quest for Atlantis stretched across his adulthood and still he had not found it. But he was getting close. He could feel it.

Miss Tobias sat quietly, but her pulse ticked impatiently in that sweet spot beneath her ear.

“I believe you have a bet,” he said. “You win this hand, and I will give you my map.”

She paused a moment, trying to gauge his meaning. “You know to which map I’m referring,” she said.

“I believe I do.”

“Then we have a deal.”

“But if you lose,” he said slowly. “I get that kiss.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but after a breath, she said nothing and merely nodded.

“The wager has been set, now let us see your hands,” the dealer said.

Silence surrounded them, and it was as if they were playing alone in his parlor. Miss Tobias flipped her cards, one-by-one, revealing three sevens and two Queens.

“A full house,” the dealer said.

A slow, satisfied smile spread across the lady’s face, a cat with her bowl of cream.

The pleasure of her smile was so enticing, so seductive, he was almost sorry he was going to win. Almost.

Anne Mallory’s Seven Secrets of Seduction – the Jaunty P. Quills tell all!

Secret Jaunty

Welcome back, Anne Mallory, who left me a year ago for a life of crime! I even promised to be Bonnie Porcupine to her Clyde! Wait…Clyde Porcupine to her Bonnie! But she said my quills made me too much of a deadly killing machine.

Anne:  I still have those outfits! I mean… *looks around suspiciously* I still remember you “talking” about those outfits.

*waggles brows* They were good, weren’t they?

*Robyn disappears to look for photographic evidence*

So, Anne. I notice the lack of porcupines in your current release.

Anne:  Er…

And it’s a book about SEDUCTION. And SECRETS. True porcupine stuff! The tales I could tell…

Anne:  Which is why I would not rob you of the telling, Jaunty! Truly. I know you said you’d split the profits with me 10/90 if I wrote your memoirs, and 10% would totally be worth it, but I’m just not sure I’m qualified.

There, there. *pats head* I’ve come up with my own list in order to help you! Behold! The Seven Secrets of Porcupines!

#1: They have quills.
#2:
They have tails.
#3:
They like bark.
#4:
They enjoy a good salt-lick.
#5:
They are awesome.
#6:
They like romance.
#7:
They can move time and space.

Anne:  That last one must really come in handy.

You have no idea. I told you that you should take the 10%. *meaningful look* Hey, did I ever tell you about the Seven Secrets of Porcupine Seduction?

Anne:  *blinks* No. What IS involved in Porcupine Seduction?

Well, first you rub-

*Margo Maguire hastily grabs the microphone from Jaunty*

Margo: Um, Anne, why don’t you tell us something about your book.

Anne:  Sure! It’s about a bookshop clerk whose writings draw a viscount to her store. For you Jaunty, think of a quiet porcu-lass with big dreams and a brooding porcu-rake who is desperate to believe in something.

Here is the back cover blurb:

Scandalous and provocative, The Seven Secrets of Seduction is an intoxicating insight into the mind of men and the desires of women – and the book has all the ton talking.

Secret #1: Every good seduction begins with a baited hook…

Well-educated, but not part of society, Miranda Chase is just as captivated by the erotic pages as everyone else in London. Intrigued by the layers she sees beneath the book’s surface, she writes an editorial about it, never realizing that her passionate words will draw an actual viscount to her uncle’s bookshop.

Maximilian, Viscount Downing, has very particular ideas about passion and sees truth only in desire. He freely flaunts his sensual power and seeks nothing more than another conquest – the one that could justify his entire debauched existence. But Miranda’s blend of innocence, trust, and love cause a strange thing to happen on the way to this seduction. Something that just might threaten the very fabric of his jaded heart…

That reminds me EXACTLY of the fifth secret of porcupine seduction, Anne! You take your baited quill hook and stick-

*Shana Galen hastily puts hand over the microphone*
*Jaunty is disgruntled*

Fine, fine. I still think it would have been better with porcupines, but we always have my memoirs. Now, let’s go rob some banks!

Being Present

“I realized that if I’m obsessing about my own feelings,
I’m not present with the people around me—and am frankly
of no use to them” Jane Lynch

Sometimes I get so caught up in the day-to-day details of my life that I forget to take the time to breath. You know to step out of the rushing around and say heck, yeah, I have a good life.

Being present isn’t something that happens easily for me. I have a constant stream of “stuff” going in my head. Part of that is the story world I happen to be living in at the moment, the other part is schedules for two kids and my honey, and errands that must be run–groceries don’t magically appear in the fridge–trust me on this!

Sometimes bigger things take precedence over my thoughts like the fact that my daughter is graduating high school and starting a new adventure half the country away from me. And instead of enjoying every last moment with her this year, I’ve been worried about the future and how she will do.

Being present should be simple, but then I thought learning my left hand from my right hand in kindergarten would be easy and I never really mastered that. In fact that’s a lesson I’ve learned over and over again in my life. The things I think should be easy for me never really are.

Those are the very things I have to work harder at.

What about you? Is being present in your life a natural thing or do you have to remind yourself to stop thinking and just live?

Like two peas…

Here we are with Jim Butcher ... which is another I thing I have to thank her for, 'cause she introduced me to his books and now he's one of my favorite writers!

If you read this blog with any kind of regularity, you know that Robyn De Hart and I are critique partners. We read each other’s books before we ship them off to the editors. We provide feedback when necessary and that final boost to the ego it sometimes takes to get the courage to actually send it in. We also brainstorm and occasional help with research.

But in addition to being my critic partner, she’s also my best friend. Of course, that term is tricky because I also consider my husband and my sister best friends, but as any woman knows, each of those roles is unique and it really is possible to have three best friends.

Now, you may not care that we’re best friends–I mean, generally speaking, I don’t know anything about your friends. Not that I don’t want to, but …. well, Robyn is feeling under the weather today, so I thought today would be like a tribute blog. So that when she’s feeling better and checks the blog, she’ll know lots of people were thinking positive thoughts about her today.

With her mother, Hattie, the coolest mom in the world.

Here are four fun facts about Robyn De Hart and/or our friendship:

  • We’ve been critiquing each others books for twelve years now.  We were critique partners before we were friends and  long before we were friends.
  • When we met, nearly all my clothes were some shade of brown, black or a sort of muddy moss green. I didn’t think I looked good in color. So I walked around looking like one of those tree people from The Lords of the Rings. She took me shopping and made me buy something bright blue. Changed my life. Seriously.
  • She was there at the birth of my daughter. She and The Professor spent like twelve hours at the hospital the night she was born. And went out for fast food at one in the morning so The Geek and I could have something to eat. That’s friendship.
  • When my daughter was born, I got flowers delivered from like five people. When my son was born, I didn’t get squat. I was so sad about it. Then a few days later I got this beautiful basket of goodies from Robyn. It was so sweet and wonderful it totally made up for the fact that my mom decided not to “inconvenience” me with flowers. FYI, flowers are never an inconvenience. Gift baskets aren’t either.
  • Once, when we first started hanging out, Robyn and I went to blockbuster to rent a movie and spent like four hours wandering around just talking about different movies we both love. The list is long.
  • When we first started critiquing, she told me I had the handwriting of a serial killer. I haven’t let her live that one down. But now we critique on-line.
  • When she sold her first book, she called to tell me and I was sitting in Taco Bell eating lunch with a book. I cried so much I think I scared other people in the restaurant. She sold Seduce Me to Grand Central Publishing five days after the birth of my son. Again, I cried. I remember getting her good news as vividly as I remember getting my own.

The truth is, this is sometimes a tough business … geez, it’s a tough world sometimes. I can’t imagine navigating it without her.

Missed that Boat

Being a writer of commercial fiction, I try to stay in tune with certain trends. Sometimes it’s not easy. There are certain things I just can’t do. Won’t do. Don’t want to do. Here are a few.

Online dating. I’ve registered with Match.com, just to experience the questionnaire (which I fully enjoyed, I want you to know). But I’ve never been on a date with someone I met online…my dear husband tends to frown on that. I actually wouldn’t mind doing this in the interest of research, but there was that “forsaking all others” bit at my wedding…so inconvenient.

Texting. Okay, I’m officially old when it comes to this arena. I hate texting. I’ve sent five texts in my life…four by accident. I find it difficult and irritating. Missed that boat. Hope never to catch it. Plus, those abbreviations are a sin against humanity. Come on! I will never ever type the letters “ur” and see them as a pronoun and verb. Never!

Sex in the City. I’ve never seen this show or movie, and I never read the book. I may be the only adult American woman under the age of 60 who can say this. For whatever reason, those four women just don’t interest me. This is shocking, I know. I’m sorry. I’m sure it’s a very fun concept. I just won’t ever find that out.

Survivor. Never seen it. Nor have I seen The Bachelor/ette, Jersey Shore, Deal or No Deal, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Top Chef or The Real Housewives of any county. I love some reality TV shows — I’m an official Deadliest Catch geek and can name the crews of each boat (Keith…you’re mean! I don’t like you! Johnathan…Call me.) I like American Idol but have never seen America’s Got Talent (or any show that features juggling). So it’s not that I don’t like reality TV shows. But the idea of watching unwashed people stabbing each other in the back on an island rife with large biting insects and humidity…nah. That sounds like my family camping trips when I was a kid. Enough of that!

Twitter. I’ve never seen a Tweet. Nor have I tweeted. I do like those words, though. They’re fun to say.

Tattoos. It seems like everyone has a tatt these days. Some of them are quite pretty. We’ll see how they look in another couple of decades. I’ve thought about getting one…an NY to honor my team. But I won’t actually go through with this. Unless I’m with evil friends (you know who you are) and I’ve had that second martini. In that case, I may well come home with a tramp stamp.

What about you? What are some of the trends that missed you? Will you jump on the bandwagon and try to catch up, or are you content to take a pass?

Story lines that capture your interest…

Recently I had a discussion with several writer friends about television shows we like (or have liked in the past) and what is it about the character or story lines that keep us coming back for more.

Off the top of my head, older television series that intrigued me: The Big Valley (the illegitimate son returning to be part of the family), Starman (an alien and his son), Scarecrow and Mrs. King (a spy and a housewife teaming up), Remington Steele (a man from out of nowhere taking on an identity that had been made up).

My current addictions: castle
Castle: This show about a mystery writer. His relationship with a certain police detective makes me want to give them their own happily-ever- after . Great characters and a plot that is intricately woven. The writers on this show really know what they’re doing.
The Good Wife: A woman dealing with her husband’s infidelity. No wait, that’s only what I thought the show was about. It’s so much more. Another well-written show with fabulous acting.
NCIS (the original) and NCIS Los Angeles : It‘s the characters that make this show such a must-see for me. Gibbs on the original NCIS—mysterious and hard to read. G- on the LA version. I’m intrigued by this man that can’t live in one place for long. What makes G the man that he is now? We’re given just enough bits and pieces about this mysterious agent to keep us interested and coming back for more.

These are the same things that make us love a book and want to keep reading. We want characters that we can cheer for, a storyline that keeps our interest with snappy dialogue and unexpected (though totally in character) actions. A story line that is intriguing, yet relatable.

An off-the-top analysis seems to indicate that I’m drawn to characters with secrets. Perhaps that’s why my first book for Avon was about a woman leading two lives…When She Was Bad. And I’m sure that’s why my upcoming release from Silhouette Special Edition is about a woman who falls in love with a man who doesn’t know who he is………..In Love With John Doe (June 2010)jd

But enough about me. What about you?

What shows are your favs? And what about that show’s plot lines and characters appeal to you?
