Hooray For Spring!

Saturday was the official first day of spring. Finally, here in Florida, we’re starting to see signs that the cold days of winter may be numbered. On Groundhog’s Day, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter — a phenomenon I’ve never understood. It has to be sunny for him to cast a shadow. So, a sunny day forecasts a longer winter? Huh. I don’t get it. Even so, the little guy was right. The entire U.S. has been experiencing record lows.  Even in Florida we’ve been 15 degrees below average temperatures.

But Saturday, was beautiful! We actually set out some flowers, went to a sidewalk art festival and ate dinner out on the patio. I’m itching for a beach day (or week) and I have an urge to throw open the windows and usher out old man winter.

How about you? How do you celebrate the vernal equinox? Do you have any spring-welcoming rituals?

I was in a workshop with the amazing Mary Buckham so it was a great day. Sunday I cleaned out my flowerbeds and it felt so good to hear my kids outside playing instead of inside playing…video games.

We like to see if an egg can stand on its end…something my father-in-law said was possible during the equinox but which we’ve never been able to pull off. But it’s fun! We put the screens in the window and sat on the porch yesterday…lovely! Today, of course, we’re back into the typical March weather…rainy and cool.

This has been a miserably cold winter for us too. We were Dallas over the weekend and it actually snowed on Saturday night!
Usually our winters in central Texas are mild enough that I don’t get “spring fever” … now “fall fever” on the other hand, I totally get. But this year, I’ve definitely got spring fever. I can’t wait for warmer weather!

The first day of Spring is my parents’ anniversary (this year was their 40th), so I celebrated with them–Subway sandwiches. Hmm. I wonder what I’ll do on my 40th.

It’s still too cold to start yard clean-up and get the outdoor furniture uncovered. In a few weeks, though.

I remember having snow on May 1st one year, so we usually have to wait to do any planting until Mother’s DAy. By then – we’re sure there won’t be any more cold weather.

Had a beautiful weekend here – lots of hiking! Now it’s cold and rainy. Blech.

I don’t have any spring-welcoming rituals. Maybe I should come up with some for next spring. I’m just so thankful and appreciative that the weather here in Northern California has been nice–very warm and sunny. :)
