Hop, hop, hop down the bunny trail

Or in my case the candy aisle.

Easter is just around the corner and the store shelves are crowded with a variety of foil-wrapped candy in soft pastels, pastel colored M&Ms, pastels peeps, jelly beans, and chocolate bunnies in way too many choices, as well as pre-made baskets and supplies for those into do-it-yourself.

It was a tradition in our family do the Easter egg (and basket) hunt. I can remember finding candy that eluded detection that first round, usually when cleaning. Love surprises like that!

But then I love chocolate.

The temptation to go into the store and out without a bag of something is just too much for me to resist. Its made harder by the face that I have a special candy that only is made at this season.

Cadbury mini eggs. OMG they are some kind of wonderful. Oh, and the caramel crème eggs. Mmm. Of course I always like to have a bowl of M&Ms in all their varieties.

But all this marketing hype provides us with another way to consume far too many calories.    I find it odd (disturbing?) that another religious holiday is wrapped around oodles of candy. And yes, I do know the pagan reasoning behind it. Is the Easter candy mainly a US thing? Do other counties do the same or similar with the Easter egg hunts?

And why don’t we celebrate with candy at all other holidays. Say, like July 4th. I mean, come on. Where’s the red, white and blue M&Ms? The US flag foils wrapped around mini candy bars?

Oh, I know. How about Cadbury mini stars with red, white and blue candy coating? Hmm, I can just see it now — chocolate Uncle Sam’s.

OK, maybe not.

What’s your favorite Easter candy? Do you have traditions that you hold at this time?

We have a local candy maker of opera cream, chocolates, dark chocolates that melt in your mouth. Pappas Candy. I Love Easter b/c all the stores carry it…no wonder I gain weight on Easter

We used to have baskets for all our kids, but now, I just put together one “community” basket – and it’s not very big because nobody really eats that much candy. My husband is the one with the sweet tooth – and he never gains an ounce (the rat).

I love the citrus flavored Jelly Belly beans…but I just don’t understand peeps. Someone explain how a human could actually eat a peep!

I adore the Cadbury Creme Eggs! SOOOO yummy! I usually buy my husband and daughter chocolate bunnies, plus do a small basket of candy and other goodies for my daughter. I wrap everything up, so it’s all a surprise for her, and she loves that.

Cadbury Mini Eggs, hands down! I put them on the grocery list, and my husband was like, What are these? Only the best candy ever! We already finished one bag and Easter is, what, 3 weeks away?

Easter candy is one of my greatest vices. Seriously, I love the stuff.
And Kristan, I’m one of those crazy humans who’s obsessed with Peeps. Every year, when I first see them in stores, I buy a box (I think there are 15 in a package) and eat the entire first row in one sitting. It’s not even that I think they’re yummy. It’s just … I don’t know, a compulsion or something.
And Russel Stover marshmallow eggs are an obsession too. Man, I love those. And just straight up jelly beans. Man, oh man. I could eat those all day. One of the few non-chocolate candies I love (I mean, beside the Peeps). Clearly this is something I could talk about all day.
I know, it’s just not right, is it?
But, I joined Weight Watchers just this week. This week! So no Easter candy for me in the immediate future. I’m just going to try to not eat it right away.

I love the jelly beans, the spice ones and the fruit flavored ones. Oh and chocolate bunnies, the good ones like Russel Stovers. I still buy my son some candy althought he is grown now.

Oh, chocolate covered marshmellow – yum. My kids are grown now but I remember how I use to hide dozens of plastic eggs with candy, coins/dollars (when older), and paper giving them clues or another surprise. There was always one or two that didn’t get found for a while lol.

Tonya, I’m drooling. Love creamy dark chocolate that melt in the mouth. Just letting it sit on the tongue and savor that rich flavor…

Margo, it’s that always the way? They can gorge and not gain an ounce and we walk by and the pounds just hop on for the ride. At least it seems that way for me!

Me either, Kristan. My grandmother adored them and so did my dad, but they were just ick to me. Jelly Beans? Love the Starburst ones. Love them too much!

Ah, that’s so sweet, Catherine. Making baskets is fun. I plan to do one for our work crew, that way I won’t over eat. :)

Amen, Shana. We’ve gone through one bag already too.

Emily, how can you go on a diet pre-Easter candy? Good luck. You can have all the peeps. I can’t say no to Cadbury mini eggs.

Catslady, that’s what my mom did too. Always hiding baskets for us. Such fun.

Fun post, Jan! Pastel M&Ms are my favorite. When I was a kid, every Easter I’d get a big bag of plain and peanut – one of each – in my basket. They were all mine! I didn’t even have to share with my little brother. It was such a treat. Kristan, I don’t get peeps either. But Emily, I’m with you on the Russell Stover marshmallow eggs. I can make myself sick on them and then come back for more. Yum!
