Cave Idus Martias — Psssst! Beware the Ides of March!

I couldn’t put the punctuation markings over the vowels correctly with WordPress but those first words are supposed to be in Latin….They are the immortal words of the Bard, a warning given to Julius Caesar about impending doom (which had occurred when Caesar was assassinated by conspirators on March 15, 44 BCE). Now, of course, Shakespeare knew that date so it was more a case of ‘Monday morning quarterbacking’ than a portent, but March does seem to be an unsettling month overall, doesn’t it?

Just think about the weather. . . how many have heard the old saying “In like a lion, out like a lamb”?   The beginning of the third month of the year is firmly entrenched in winter, with storms, both snow and rain, expected. By the end of the month, spring has arrived. Some of the worst Nor’easters in my area on the East Coast have arrived in March, one I remember because it began on my sister’s birthday on March 14 and ended on the 15th, dumping more than a foot of snow on us.

Then, just after mid-month, there are the dueling saints — the Irish have St Patrick first and they do things like drinking, partying, singing Irish songs and other fun things like turning the Chicago River green! And, in his honor, Southwest airlines offers passengers free beer to celebrate… On the other hand,

the Italians have St Joseph and they go to Mass, cook big family meals and pray.  A different approach for sure!

And after all the feasting, a day of balance in the universe known as the vernal equinox, a day of equal daylight and night, the end of winter and the beginning of spring!  The earth wobbles back up straight on its path in the other direction, giving the northern hemisphere more hours of day as the southern hemisphere. Again, doesn’t sound like a stable time of the year to me!

But, brighter and warmer and longer days are nearly here! March leaves like a lamb, all the uncertainties and unsettledness behind us and the calmer, gentler winds of April approach. The weather eases, the winter wimpers away and our moods and days lighten.

So, though many think of the warnings about March, I see the opportunity of change and the expectations of the future.  I welcome the winds at the beginning of the month, but also the calm breezes at the end.  How about you? Do you hope for the end of winter and the beginning of spring?  St. Patrick or St. Joseph? Portent of doom or opportunities abounding? Leave a note telling me what you will miss the most about the winter or what you look forward to the most about the spring and I’ll pick two people to receive copies of my upcoming Harlequin Historical anthology – Pleasurably Undone.

While lamenting the end to the the terrific snow season, Terri is also looking forward to her new releases – PLEASURABLY UNDONE! is an April release from Harlequin Historicals.  Then in May (April 27th actually!), her novella A STORM OF LOVE will be part of a Kensington Brava anthology that includes Susan Johnson and Mary Wine. Visit her website at www.terribrisbin.com to find out about the new books and her upcoming appearances!

Great blog! I am going to miss being stuck in the house with my DH and kids playing games and making it work as a family, especially since we got LOADS of snow.

I am also going to miss editing my MS. During the winter is when I hibernate and get a ton of edits complete.

I can’t wait to see the leaves and their vibrant greens, birds chirping and the sounds of kids bouncing balls and riding their bikes.

I’ll miss winter. For some strange reason, I always do. I dread the humid heat of summer but I love the fall and all its great colors … I know – it’s crazy, but there it is.

For the past few years in Texas, Spring has arrived with little fan fare. The winters were mild, so we didn’t really notice when they past, just looked up one day in May and said, “Hey, when it reach 95?”
But not this year. Man, I’m going to be *glad* when spring hits. I am tired of being cold. I don’t know how you northern girls do it. And yesterday, our heater went out for a few hours (turned out to be no big deal), but it got down to the low sixties. In the house! (I know, laugh it up. I said I was a wimp, right?) But I was freezing. I’m so ready for spring!

What I don’t get is how you southern girls can live with A/C all the time. I guess you get used to whatever you live with, eh?

As a gardener, I love spring…I have a “stare at the ground” phase, when I will my plants to grow. Then all of a sudden, spring is here! I think May is the sweetest month…the lilacs bloom, and my peony bush gives those huge blossoms…yep, I’m happy enough to see winter go. And I’ll be happy to welcome it back next December.

We still have some snowstorms in March. I remember one year it snowed in May!

margo, I actually don’t like the A/C on all the time either. When it’s really hot here–like 105 outside, so that’s like 125 in your car, right?–and then you go in a store and the A/C is set to 66. I hate that! Those are the days when I just like to stay at home with my A/C set to a very reasonable 78 degrees.

I am not going to miss anything from this winter! I am sooo looking forward to spring. Flowers blooming sunshine and warmer tempts so I can get out and take walks. Mainly the warmer tempts is what I am looking forward to.

    Hi Terri!
I’m ready for the lamb! I, too, love the snow storms because of the forced hibernation and writing time (who wants to go out in that!), but I love spring/flowers/warmth even more.

    Love your blogs!

Heya Terri! While I love snow, by mid February I am already looking forward to spring. What will I miss? The beauty of how clean everything looks right after a snowfall; snow days; hot chocolate.

Like Kristan, I love to watch the flowers grow. I, too, look for the green shoots to break thru the dirt and then I watch them grow until, one day, they present me with wonderfully colorful flowers.

Spring means rebirth. Nature comes alive as the trees grow new leaves. The grass turns green again. Birds sing their lullabies. Lakes come alive as the iceflows melt. And the geese return ;)

    I love spring ;)

We were supposed to get snow today, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I’ll miss the snow days as an excuse to not come in to work. I am ready for Spring.

Nope, not going to miss winter at all (I too live in the Northeast). Aren’t there some years that March comes in like a lamb and out like a lion. It was pretty mild here this week and I hear another storm is coming (grrr). Don’t you hate it when it snows on Easter!!! Spring has always been my favorite time of year. Looking for the first buds and blooms after all that white or worse, dirty brown/grey slush. I planned both my daughters birth for spring and it worked lol.

    Hi Terri,

I am in Seattle, and looking forward to sunnier days. We have had a very mild winter, and some of our cherry blossom trees are already darkening as they loose petals, and grow new leaves!

These past weeks I felt like I was waking up, as I looked around at little nubs showing up on trees, and the first bulb flowers popping up on the ground!

Suddenly not-so-dark evenings always hits me with a smile… =)
