Favorite Settings

snow
When you read a book are there particular settings that draw you in?

For myself when I read historicals, I like England and Scotland best. Unless of course it’s a western. :) India and France…ummm, not so much.

For contemporaries I like small towns and settings more in the midwest than in the south or on the coasts. That’s not to say I won’t read a book set in a different local but they’re not books I’m immediately drawn to…

How about you? What settings do you prefer? Or, does it even matter?

BTW, I just received my author copies of my The Doctor’s Baby, my new book that will out in April.

I’ll draw a winner from everyone who comments and that person will win a copy!

And…big announcement…I’ve just had my website revised. If you’ve got a minute, go to www.cindykirk and check it out. Let me know what you think!

Hey Cindy, I love England and Scotland too. Those are the first settings I encountered when I started reading romances. I also love islands, you know, the ones pirates always went to. Ships are really cool, especially when in historicals because of the all the “rules” or rather lack thereof at sea.

I also read a lot of westerns because I grew up on Cowboys and Indians…fave tv show was Wagon Train, Big Valley, and Bonanza. I have a love for that way of living for some reason…no clue why.

Though I love these particular settings, it doesn’t really matter where a book takes place as long as the story grabs me. When that happens, I tend to forget the place and focus more on the character and their interactions. I get “lost” if you will.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the day. YAY on receiving your author copies. I will check out your website too. Talk to you later.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

Settings set the mood but I have no preference if the story draws me in.

I love Scotland more than other places. It’s really beautiful there and I like Ireland too.
I’ve read a few taking place in India but that does’t draw me in. Those small towns in America are real cosy like in Debbie Macomber’s books.

I love historicals set in England, Scotland, or Ireland. I think the setting really creates atmosphere for a book, especially historical romances.

I guess I tend to prefer urban settings, like London or New York. i’ve read plenty of books set in small towns. I like them as well, but if I had to pick, I’d pick an urban setting.

For historicals I like Scotland and Ireland best, and for contemporaries I prefer non-metropolitan areas.

Love your new website, Cindy! It’s so bright and cheerful. As for settings…really, it’s the story/plot that grabs me rather than the setting. Still, I love to read about places I haven’t been. If the author draws me in and makes me feel as if I’ve visited, then I know she’s done a great job.

I read mostly contemporaries and enjoy books set in small towns and big cities. I live in a fairly big city, so enjoy reading about places that are very different from where I live, but also like reading books set in similar settings to where I reside. I’m not very picky when it comes to settings.

I like England, Scotland and Ireland. I also like Italy, Greece, Spain and a lot of European countries. I like just about anywhere in the USA. I live in the central section of the United States so I do enjoy stories that take place on either coast.

    Hi Cindy,
Firstly thanks for the book, got them last week. Living in Ireland I try to read book for other placees I havn’t been. I’m a sucker for the deep south..True Blood addict at the moment the accents are fab!! It is on my ‘to do’ list to vist New Orleans it makes me think of jazz and the blues which I also love. I try to find a cd to play in the background of each book I’m reading, bit of Nickel creek blue grass for my western themed novels has been working for me lately. I tend to become obsessed with certain themes at certain times of the year. I will read all cowboy heroes for a while then get sick of them, then switch to Greek millionaires etc.I love Greek and Italian settings too, living in Ireland not too much sun shine and I love reading about places which allow me to imagine the sun on my face in the morning instead of the rain.:) New website is class by the way.
