Romantic Memories and A Valentine’s Book Signing

My favorite day in February is without doubt February 14, Valentine’s Day.  I already have plans in mind for this special occasion.  I’m going to cook my husband and daughter a special dinner to celebrate not just how much I love them as amazing individuals, but us being a close, loving family.  I’ve already had requests for a traditional English dinner of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, and I’m happy to cater to this request, since it’s one of my favorite meals, too.

Speaking of favorites, I realized the other day that this February 14 will be the 17th one my husband and I are celebrating as a married couple.  That’s pretty romantic, to me.  One of my all-time-favorite memories of us as a couple is of our honeymoon in Oxfordshire, England.

My husband and I married in Canada, where I grew up.  However, since my husband and I had met in England while I was studying in London and living with relatives, and we both had friends and family who couldn’t attend the Canadian ceremony, we decided to have a second reception in England.

I knew he and I were going to honeymoon for a few days somewhere before this celebration, but my husband stubbornly refused to say where.  Of course, I did my best to persuade him to tell me, but he just grinned and refused to give any clues.  The suspense was both thrilling and a little unnerving.  After we flew to the UK, he rented a car and off we went, me still unaware of our final destination.

Well, it was definitely worth the wait.  I was more than thrilled when we ended up at the beautiful Weston Manor Hotel, an exquisite building with old wooden panels and creaky floors that dates back to the 11th century.  My husband, knowing how much I love history, historic sites, and antiques, thought this would be the perfect getaway.  He was right!  The lovely gardens were the perfect setting for walks in the morning sunshine.  Our room had a huge claw-footed tub, perfect for bubble baths and relaxing with a glass of wine and a book.  And our honeymoon package included delicious gourmet dinners every night.  Fabulous!  The stay was perfect in every way, and made me appreciate all the more what a wonderful man I’d married.  The kind of guy who’d make a pretty darned good story hero.

Is it any wonder I write romance?

What about you?  Do you have a romantic memory you’d like to share?

Hmmm. Would your husband mind calling McIrish and giving him some suggestions? While my dear husband is lovely, his planning usually consists of “Whatever you want, honey.” I can’t imagine him planning a romantic getaway…but I’m completely willing to be surprised!

My husband discovered a cabin in the woods years ago. Every year he surprises me with a two night get away. He’s never made it the same time each year. It’s only for couples and it’s beautiful!

your husband sounds like a lovely person. I’m really touched that you include your daughter in the valentine’s dinner. I think sometimes we forget that beyond all the hype thre is a very real celebration in there. I too include my daughters in valentine’s day. I give them a card and write down all the things I like about them. They have the usual 16 year old teen angst thing,’ goin on’ but on that day it’s all forgotton and I try to focus on all the things I like about them and everyone I love. Great blog, really heartfelt. oh and my husband gave me a dyson last year, he still aint walkin right.

The most romantic thing the Geek ever did was sneak flowers into the house one night and hide them in a closet so he could put them out first thing in the morning, so they were right there when I woke up on my birthday. Totally charming.
Truly a once in a lifetime kind of thing, I guess, because that was years ago and he hasn’t done anything like it since.
However, most days, I just happy when he remembers to put in a new garbage bag after taking out the trash. I love flowers, but sometimes we have to count up the thousand little things our guys do.

Kristan, sure, I’ll ask my husband to talk to McIrish. You deserve a romantic getaway! A suggestion . . . Maybe you could surprise your hubby by booking a couple of nights away somewhere? He’ll no doubt have such a terrific time, you’ll easily convince him it’s his turn to book the next getaway.

Michelle, I am indeed lucky to have such a great guy as my husband. Without him, I wouldn’t have my daughter, who is growing up way too fast but brings so much fun and joy to our lives. She’s a teenager, too, so I can totally relate to the “teen angst!” By the way, I love your idea of the notes in the Valentine’s cards; great idea! Thanks so much for leavng your thoughts, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

Emily, aww, I’ll bet those were the most beautiful flowers. I so agree, it’s important to think about all the small but important ways our guys help us out every day. I hope you and the Geek have a wonderful, romantic Valentine’s Day together.

What a lovely story! So envious of the time you’ve spent in England. We’re planning a trip, just not sure when I’ll get there.

Most romantic thing hubby’s done? I can’t think of a particular thing, but one thing that comes to mind is the smile he gives me whenever I’ve achieved something career-wise — like he’s so happy and proud he could just burst. I think that’s my favorite.
