Famous People

Biggio

Saturday morning Ultimate Sportsfan and I were at Starbucks. I was drinking a peppermint mocha (did you know they have those all year?) and eating a muffin when USF grabs my arm and says, real low, “That’s Craig Biggio.”

So I say, real low, “The baseball guy?”

He says, “Yes.”

I watch Craig Biggio, who is wearing a cap and sunglasses, go to the counter, order, and then wait for his coffee. He seems normal enough, so I say to USF, “Do you want to get his autograph?”

USF says, “No. I’m not going to bother him.”

That makes sense to me. If I was Craig Biggio and just out to get a kolache (from the place next to Starbucks) and a cup o’ joe early Saturday morning, I wouldn’t want to have to stop and sign autographs either.

On the other hand, maybe I would. I mean, I’ve been asked for my autograph before, and it was pretty cool. Once in the airport after an RWA conference someone came up to me and asked me to sign one of my books. I was pretty flattered and not at all put out. But that was just one person and one time.

So what about you? Have you ever seen someone famous? Did you ask for his or her autograph? Have you ever been asked for your autograph?

I have four boys ranging from 10-16 and they all play different sports. Since we live in N. KY where a ton of Cincinnati Reds and Bengal players live, we see them all the time getting gas or eating or getting ice cream. Of course we ask for their autographs. As a matter of fact, Chad Johnson OchoCino (really!) has gotten to know one of my sons so well, that during signings he allows my son to stand behind the table with him and some of the other players during the signing.
If it’s just me and I see someone, No-I don’t bother them. BUT if I’m famous, I will love to sign autographs!!!

LOL, Michelle! Yes, there is always time for a good stalking–if it’s friendly.

Tonya, I bet your sons feel so lucky to see their favorite players so often!

I’ve seen some of my favorite sports figures (Detroit Red Wing hockey players) at my local Starbuck’s – but I’ve never asked for an autograph. It seems intrusive to me – they’re with their buddies, usually on their way downtown to a game – it just doesn’t seem right. But I never mind when someone asks ME for my signature!

I live in LA and frequently have seen celebrities roaming in their natural habitat. It’s impossible not to glance their way a few times, but beyond that, I really try to ignore them. I can’t imagine how sad I would feel to never be able to anonymously go anywhere.

When I was kid, growing up near Dallas, I saw a guy in wheelchair at the mall that I would have sworn was Tom Cruise. A couple of days later, I read an interview with Tom Cruise. Turns out he was in Dallas filming Born on the Fourth of July and met the interviewer in a mall and he was getting in character by going everywhere in his wheelchair.
Who knows if the guy I saw was really Tom Cruise though.

I’ve never asked for an autograph. I would like to ask for a kiss, though, from certain male celebrities (Derek Jeter, I’m talking to you! You too, Gerard Butler!) But I’m of the same mind to leave celebs alone. Give ‘em peace.

Shana, that’s really neat about being asked for your autograph at the airport. Your book obviously impressed that reader, and I expect the signed copy went onto her “keeper” shelf. I’ve never been asked for an autograph, apart from at book signings. I can imagine it’s very flattering to be asked.

Michelle, I would have wanted to stalk Daniel Radcliffe had I seen him too, but I probably wouldn’t have had the nerve. He always seems totally charming in interviews.

My mom and I got bumped from first class once (she was a travel agent at the time) by Brooks & Dunn, so we didn’t bother talking to them. For the most part I don’t think I would ever approach someone if I saw them. Hell, I get nervous everytime I see Teresa Medeiros and now I’ve known her for years, still I get totally star struck. I’m a dork that way. And don’t even get me started about what an idiot I made of myself when I met Jim Butcher. *sigh*

This was a gret blog really made me laugh. Lilly saying ‘seeing celebrities in their natural habitat’ that is so funny. It makes me think of David Attenbourgh, stalking through the amazon looking at species in their natural environment. I think if I had notice of a month before seeing a celeb it would be good. I could do a checklist.Get hair done, lose baby weight(16 years later), get hair done, bleach teeth, wear extra make up,remove pasta stain from clothes, do not grin like idiot. A month might just about cover it!!! Oh! forgot ditch husband as tends to roll eyes at my interest in stalking celebs and all things celeb based.

The only non-author autograph I have is Ted Neeley’s. He was Jesus in the Jesus Christ Superstar movie, which is a big deal in my family. We all know the words to all the songs, me and my sisters. My oldest sib thought Ted was to die for, so it was cool being able to tell her I met him. Plus, sometimes it’s fun to tell people you met Jesus. ;-)
