C’mon! Admit it — wasn’t Paul your favorite Beatle? Sigh….he was mine for sure. When I first saw him on TV, on the Ed Sullivan Show, I nearly swooned for the first time in my then-pretty-short life. Those soulful eyes, that hair….sigh…I was in love.
I could not see how anyone thought the others were better looking, or could sing better, than MY Paul. Throughout the Beatles career, I championed Paul, cheered when I saw “A Hard Day’s Night” and “HELP!” and mourned at the possibility that Paul was DEAD?!? He was my favorite.
Back when the Beatles toured, I was too young to go to a live concert.
And, unlike today, musical groups and artists did not visit every town in America while on tour–only major places in major cities. So, for years and years, decades even, I never got the chance to see the Beatles, or MY Paul, live in concert. So, I saved my babysitting money up and bought their records, their LPs, posters, 16 Magazine and anything else I could find while waiting for the chance to see Paul in person.
Fast forward to the early 90s and Philadelphia’s Veterans’ Stadium….the Beatles are done, Paul is married (how could he!??) to Linda and they’re touring the US and finally, finally!!, I am in the crowd! Woohooo! Paul in person and I was only in my late 30s, married, a mom and still a fan. In spite of my husband’s presence (yeah, I had to take him) and his stern glares, when Paul came on stage, I did what I’d waited years to do –
I stood up and screamed “I LOVE YOU PAUL!” at the top of my lungs!
It felt great. It felt empowering. It felt so good to release all the feelings I’d held inside since teenager years and let him know how I felt about him. He was my favorite…sigh…. And you know, I’ve seen him in concert several times since then and the reaction is the same each time — I am transported back to being 13 years old and in love.
This week, dear hubby (who is a Beatles fan because of their music and is not affected by how cute they were….) and I are going to see a Beatles tribute band — RAIN is appearing in Philadelphia. We’ve seen a few others, like Beatlemaniacs and the British Invasion (in Disney’s Epcot) and enjoyed them, but RAIN is supposed to be one of the best aka sound and look the most like the originals.
No, I know they’re not the real thing, but for a few short hours, I’m going to suspend my disbelief and relive my teenage years. And I may even scream out “I LOVE YOU, PAUL!” once or twice just for fun!
So, who was/is your favorite Beatle? Or were you a fan of their music? Let me know by posting between now and Saturday and I’ll pick someone to win a RAIN souvenir and an autographed book!
Terri (whose favorite is still….sigh….Paul)

I really liked George b/c he wasn’t into the lime light and he continued to make music after the break up. He wasn’t in need of the constant companion as most of there were.

Ditto Tonya! I thought George was the best. Maybe because he seemed a little shy? I don’t know – who can account for those wild hormones that rip through the adolescent body?

Paul was the only one for me. I was 13 the year they released their first US single and appeared on Ed Sullivan. I sat in front of our television, mesmerized. My parents sat behind me, shaking their heads…and not in time to the music! lol!
I never got to see them in concert.
I still have all their vinyl albums and the 45’s I bought during my teen years. Sweet memories. Thanks, Terri!
P.S. I don’t talk about the OTHER one either!

My dad was a HUGE Beatle fan. He was always singing their songs, mostly off key. I have some good memories coming up hearing a song like Yesterday or Let it Be. But I am not a fan myself nor have I a favorite Beatle.

I never have been a fan of the Beatles, just don’t get the enthusiasm about their music. But then againI was only 5 or 6 when John Lennon was killed. I’m actually more of the generation who knew his son and his music, as short lived as that was. But of course I’m familiar with the Beatles and there were those I went to high school with that were big fans, but it just doesn’t jive with me.
Now all that being said, I was a fan of the Monkees – I used to watch their show when I came home from school. I had a huge crush on Davy Jones. *sigh*

I’m going to have to stir things up a bit here…I definitely fall on John’s side of the John vs. Paul debate.
You can’t beat John and Paul working together, but I like John’s solo career much better than Paul’s.
I think “Imagine” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
And John wrote one of my favorite lesser-known Beatles songs, “Julia.”
I still have a place in my heart for all of the Beatles, though, and I’ve never changed anyone’s mind in the John/Paul debate, so I’m willing to agree to disagree!
I have no quarrel with a fellow Beatles fan!

LOL, Terri! Love your post! Paul was always my favorite, too! Like you, I was too young to see the Beatles in concert, but a few years ago, my husband and I were given free tickets for a box seat and a limo for the night for a Paul McCartney concert in Houston. It was one of the highlights of my life! And yes, I felt like a young girly fan all over again. Cried like a baby when he sang Yesterday. We were at DisneyWorld this Christmas break and we saw the group that sings at Epcot. What a lovely memory, sitting in the garden in the British section with a bunch of strangers and all of us smiling and singing We All Live in a Yellow Submarine. One of those rare moments when the world seems perfect!

My favorite Beatle was Ringo. I think I was more attracted to his unique name than his looks or personality. It is interesting however how truly timeless the Beatles are. My daughter told me their prom theme this year is going to be Prom 2010, Let It Be. They are going all out; the junior class painting bigger than life portraits of the fabulous group. I can’t wait to go check out their decorations.

I have to confess that though I enjoy their music, I’ve not gotten to know the Beatles individually; I think Paul’s the one who’s gotten the most exposure in recent years. And have fun with RAIN! That sounds like a delightful concert to see!
