“Sex addiction”? Really?

One of my sons is an avid golfer and loves to watch golf when it’s on TV. In fact, ever since we got high definition TV, I’ve started watching golf tournaments, too. And it was always more interesting when Tiger played. Not that the other golfers aren’t good. But Tiger has a presence, you know? Some people can walk on stage and everyone pays attention. Tiger has that. Apparently, I’m not the only one who believes this. I understand that the TV ratings are actually DOUBLE when Tiger plays.

My son says that Tiger’s personal life makes no difference to him – he just likes to watch him play golf. No doubt that’s true. And it’s nobody’s business that he cheated on his wife. Repeatedly. It’s a private issue that the two of them have to work out. Unfortunately, the public bought into his squeaky-clean image that was hugely promoted by a bunch of overpriced name-brand products (overpriced in part, because of the enormous sums of money they paid him to endorse their products). You’ve got to wonder if these people didn’t know what Tiger was actually up to, but that’s a whole different blog.

Some of my friends say Tiger’s obviously got some obsession with sex, since there are rumors that  his handlers would  get “dates” for him with women he didn’t know, but was attracted to. (Reminds you of a john and a hooker, doesn’t it? Only, I’m thinking it’s probably a lot cleaner). Anyway, he’s not the first – what about David Duchovny and Charlie Sheen? Or even Bill Clinton? Supposedly, these guys can’t get enough, either. My question is: Is this really a mental illness – an actual addiction? Or is it just plain old immaturity – having to get horizontal with anything on two legs. Isn’t there a point when we all grow up and understand there are limits on our behavior? Is the label “sex addict” a cop out? Are these guys just a bunch of hound dogs who need to develop some maturity? Or is this a real thing?

I’m wondering what you all think.

I think the saying “s/he could have anyone they wanted” is very applicable to celebrities and that has to be very heady for them. Celebrities are always going to have a multitude of people “offering” themselves to them and I think men are more susceptible to that. I think if they away with it enough, they come to think of it as an entitlement – kind of like people who think they’re above the law – the acceptable rules of society don’t apply to them.

It’s early so I don’t know if that makes sense and I don’t know what category that would fall into but I do think that there are people are going to cheat because they can. And if they have people helping them out, all the better in their minds. It doesn’t just apply to men either though, there are women who do the same thing – I just think men have less restraint when it comes to that sort of thing.

Well…I think it’s sad. I have four boys, who all play sports, and when one lf their idols do ANYTHING morally wrong-I have to stop and reevaluate my faith in what my kids consider heroes. My boys are all teenagers now so they understand what is said or being said.
My response is always the same, ‘you can’t always believe what you hear. Let’s wait and see the facts until we discuss it.’ Generally we are discussing it!
I understand they are human as every other MAN… I mean person and we don’t live their life, but on the other hand they are role models.
The big disappointment to me this week is Edwards. I feel really bad for his wife.
As for sex addiction…is that the new term for CHEATING and not having responsibility for your actions? There’s an excuse for every immoral act I guess.
Hi My name is Tonya and I suffer from stuffitis…what is that you ask? I LOVE TO BUY STUFF.

Power corrupts, and money is power…there just aren’t enough Paul Newman types out there! His famous quote was something like, “Why go out for a burger when I have steak at home?”

I’d forgotten about Paul Newman. He was a wholly different breed, wasn’t he?

Well, this might sound strange coming from a romance writer–but then again, maybe not because I write about love not sex. Anyway, I think the whole culture is sex obsessed. I can’t turn on the TV or radio or drive down the freeway or go to a movie without being bombarded by sex. Those of you who have kids know what I mean. I used to teach middle school and was constantly wondering how to explain some of what we saw and they asked about.

I think anything can become an addiction, and unlike alcohol or cigarettes, you can’t get away from sex very easily.

Hypocrits, immature, entitled, greedy, and even murder and yet people still seem to still idolize them. I have a limit where I just can’t watch an actor (even some that use to be my favorite) after their over the top antics (vices). Everyone has an excuse and no one is responsible anymore. That’s where I hate calling it an illness. It’s pure selfishness and thinking only of oneself. I may forgive but I never forget lol.

100% agree with you Shana. My sons are 3 and 9 and I can’t leave them watch TV alone, even in the afternoon. It’s partly why I cancelled my cable subscription… we couldn’t even watch TV anymore. The only channel that is on in my house is the cartoon network… much safer ;-)

It is really tough to raise kids now – everything is out in the open, and while that might become the new “norm” in 20 years, there’s a lot that kids are exposed to that we parents would rather they didn’t learn quite yet. They – as parents in the future – will probably view it altogether differently.

Frankly I think the whole addiction thing is a load of crap. There seems to be a syndrome or addiction or label provided to explain any and every type of behavior out there. While most of us remain faithful to our spouses there are those in the news that just can’t help it. Give me a break. Commitment takes work, it’s a conscious decision and it seems sad that there are so many who don’t seem to grasp that. Perhaps if they read more romance novels. ;-)

It is an addiction when it interferes with your life… You would rather be in bed with someone than going to work, finding work, paying bills, meeting with family, conversing, eating, etc.

Various politicians and celebrities are copping out.

    in my opinion

Too tru, I’m so sick of these celebrities who seem to think it is ok to sleep with every person who waves a autogaph book at the. Tiger Woods clocked up so many he didn’t spend I night as a fateful married guy. I also agree where are all the Paul Newman type gone. When did it become ok to rape children, murder your spouse and general prostitue yourself to the highest bidder because you are a celebrity(and I use the term lightly). Seriously though you know if Tiger Woods wasn’t famous I would touch him with yours:)

Can someone please get me an editor I seriously have become spell checker challenged. I do know faithful is not spelt fateful…argh!!I counted 6 typing erors in that one comment alone. My ability to spell even simple words has been made redundant by my spell checking..easy edit life style. I’m the Tiger Woods of spelling mistakes!
