Catherine -- let me try again . . .

I'm afraid I cannot help you -- my desk area is a monument to confusion and dissarray...BUT I know what is on there and where everything is...no matter what my husband thinks!

Catslady, my desk truly is as messy as I described in my post! I confess I'm a bit of a pack rat too.
Shana, I totally admire you for your neat and tidy desk. You're absolutely right about keeping on top of the clutter and having a place for everything. I must take a fresh look at my desk and find an organizational stragegy that works for me.
Robyn, I hear you about the deadline and research books! That's when most of my research tomes land on my desk, too, as I double check facts and historical details.
Paula R, I'm so glad you stopped by! I like the idea of sitting in a chair to write. Good for you for finding a strategy that works and keeps the procrastination at bay.

Hi Catherine, loved the blog topic today. I can't do much work when my desk is messy. If it is, I go right into procrastination station; and I could be there for days, months even. So, when I finally do get disgusted with myself, and clean, I don't use the desk anymore. I sit in a chair where I don't have excess space around me, and write. I try to remember to put things back where they were too. It is going okay so far, but I am not sure how much longer I could last.

Peace and love,
Paula R.

The everything has a place thing is like my motto - that's the fastest way for me to get messy is if I don't know where to put something. Our whole world right now is messy simply because we're living in a very small space with too much stuff and not enough storage. When we finally get into our new house then I'll be able to get us organized again. As for a messy desk though, I'm usually pretty good except those last few weeks before deadline when I pull out a ton of research books to check up on facts and I tend to get a pile of books circling my desk and the top is covered with post-it notes and manuscript pages.

I can't work if my desk isn't neat and organized. There's only one way I know to stay organized and that's to constantly keep up with it. Everything has a place or you need to make one for it. Then every time you take something out of its place or get something new, put it back. It takes time and effort, but some of us can't help it!
