Hair today, gone….

hair
When I went to have my hair cut and high-lighted this time I found myself tempted to tell my stylist to do something wild and crazy. Perhaps color it red…cut it in a different way…just do whatever she wanted.

In the end, I didn’t. Because the only time I told a hairdresser to do something different, I ended up with dark, dark brown hair (when my hair was normally dark blonde). My boyfriend called me Elvira and people just stared when they saw me. Is it any wonder I’m not more adventurous?

How about you? Do you have a “hair” adventure that you’d like to share?

And do you think I should do it…tell my stylist to just do something very different? Or shall I continue to play it safe?

Bad haircut? Oh, boy, YES! My mother always says the difference between a good and bad haircut is about 2 weeks. Let me tell you, this one took a MONTH!
I had been going to a hairdresser in Des Moines (about an hour away) for 4 months until my regular hairdresser in town got back from her maternity leave. So, the 3rd, and final, time I am to have my hair cut, the DM stylist quit 2 hours before my appt. and no one called me. Another stylist cut my hair and I had hair length of only 1 inch–Shorter than SHORT! I cried because two days from then I was going to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding. A friend used gel in my hair and other people liked it, but I HATED it. A mini curling iron was even hard to use the first 10 days.

P.S. I trust my hairstylist now because she knows me and what I like, so I have told her on occasion, “Let’s do something different.” Of course, my husband says that no matter how I get it cut, I end up styling it the same way I have for the last 10 years!

:Ö) I understand you completely! Once I went and wanted highlights, you know… splotches of white/yellowish white in my reddish brown hair just to break it up a bit… the hairdresser died it all yellow :Ö/ I wore a hat for weeks. That´s a tragic story. But on another occation I asked for something different at another salon. I asked for darkbrown/blackish hair with purple highlights… I absolutely loved it :Ö) So I think you should go for it again sometimes. You just might get lucky :Ö) If it doesn´t….weeeellll…. you can just were a hat for weeks  ;-)

Oh, do something different! I tried the last time I got my hair cut. I said, “I want bangs!” And I got them. But it ended up looking the same as before. I don’t know how that happens. I’m getting my hair cut again on Monday, but I don’t know what to tell them this time.

Oh, my, yes. Note to self: Never request for “something different” again. I ended up with an asymmetrical chop that took six months to grow out. All photos have been burned!

Back in the early years of my marriage I decided I wanted a little more “body” in my hair. Let’s just call me young and foolish. I told my stylist I wanted a *mild* body wave and I mentioned that she probably shouldn’t leave it on too long. Yep, you guessed it. I walked out of there looking like Little Orphan Annie. Not my best moment!

I’ve been with my current stylist for nine years and trust him implicitly. I’ll often tell him to “be creative” and I’ve never regretted it. Of course, my hair grows like a weed so that helps. ;-)

My feeling is, it’s only hair. It’ll grow out! So you should totally go for it.
It’s not like you’re thinking of waking into a tattoo parlor and saying “Do something different!”

As for me, I used to wear my hair really long (um, actually it’s still long in the picture there) and twice I got it all cut off and donated it to Wigs for Kids. That was a lot of fun.

I’ve played with color before, went bright red once and it looked great for about 2 weeks and then it began to fade. My hair is so fine, it doesn’t hold color, it just rinses right out. So I don’t fiddle with it much. But this past summer I wanted to do something fun and crazy so I did 2 bright pink streaks in the back (underneath) of my hair. They looked so cute and my hairdresser warned me that they would start to fade quickly since it was a hair stain. Well, I’m in the pool 3 times a week and I figured that would really fade them out. Flash forward to December, yep, still pink in my hair. So we decide to bleach it out. But it won’t come out. Moral of my story – I won’t be doing anything crazy with my hair again anytime soon. It will grow out and that hair will be normal again someday. But this has been too much. Funny, but too much.

Being a stylist myself, I can tell you that the client who says, “Give me something different.” is my favorite kind!! It can get boring for us doing the same styles over and over.

Although, I do try to take in to consideration the type of client I am dealing with. A subtle change can make a huge difference to a client whose been wearing the same style for years. It’s all a matter of knowing you client, and the client feeling comfortable with their stylist.

I had worn my hail pretty long with a perm for many years and then it got to where it wouldn’t hold a perm, so last year I went in had them cut it off really short. I kind of like it. Its is different that for sure. Sometimes when I go in to get it cut they cut it to short but the hair cut last a little longer that way. I don’t like it when I go in and they lightly trim it and you back in there in about two weeks for another cut.

I’m loving these comments…and horror stories.

But I still need more input before I make my decision to go craaaaaazy with the hair.

I generally go really short or really long. My hair grows fast. I keep it long for about three years and then I get the instant gratification hair up my butt and have my stylist cut it off. She tries to talk me out of it, but I refuse. This year I got bangs for the first time in 25 years.
Go for it!!! It’s just hair.

If you *really* trust your hairdresser, go for it! Sometimes a change is nice.
Sometimes it’s downright hideous… When I was in college, I let a hairdresser (whom I didn’t know very well) talk me into being her victim for a hair show. My only stipulation was that I didn’t want her to dye my hair red (I don’t know why. Because I’ve been a redhead several times since.) She asked, “How ‘bout a nice honey blond?” Her version of “honey blonde” turned out to be the most vibrant shade of copper I’d ever seen and the haircut made me look like the sister of the singer in that 80s band A Flock of Seagulls. It eventually grew out, but I never did another hair show.

I’ve gone in twice in my life and said “do whatever you’d like with my hair”. Once I let them do it and was pleased with the result, the other time I amended my statement with “so long as I can still french braid it”. The amendment disappointed the person because apparently she was going to chop my hair all off. Having said all that, my outlook is that hair will grow back out. If you want to be adventurous, go for it. Worst case scenario is that you don’t like it. You can re-dye your hair if you want/need to or cut it really short and then keep cutting it until the color grows out. I say go for it otherwise you’ll always wonder and/or beat yourself up because you didn’t.

If you’re confident that you have a good stylist, ask her to suggest a new color of highlights and a style that would look great on you. I’ve done that before and never been disappointed. Since stylists look at faces and coloring all day long, a talented one has good instincts. Go for it

Thanks to all of you for your words of support. At this moment I’m feeling strong…and planning to make some changes at my next appointment!!!

    After all, it’s only hair…right???
