Judging a book by its cover

coverI recently got the cover for my next Legend Hunters book, Desire Me, which will hit stores in early summer 2010. And it’s totally stunning so I must share it with you. Isn’t it so beautiful? I was super excited when I first saw it because in my mind this book felt like a blue book. I’m sure at doesn’t actually make much sense, but sometimes I get a color vibe.

In any case it got me thinking about how some covers can really create a feeling for a book and can enhance the story or sometimes make a book not quite work. You know I love great covers and I will often pick up a book I’m drawn to because of the cover. It’s actually how I found Teresa Medeiros many years ago. I was in a bookstore looking around and the cover for her book Heather & Velvet caught my attention (gotta love those old Fabio covers!) and I was instantly hooked and now she’s one of my favorite authors.

What are some of your favorite covers? What do you usually look for in a cover? Have you ever bought a book simply because of the cover? I’ll draw a winner from one lucky commenter today to win an autographed copy of Seduce Me.

In other news I must brag about the fact that yesterday I found out that Seduce Me is a Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award Nominee for Best Historical Romantic Adventure! Go Fielding and Esme!

Wow, love this cover too ! (you’ve really been lucky so far)
I’m very partial to covers. More than I should in fact. I baught a few books recently because of the covers (and the blurbs seemed nice too). I’ve been disappointed with a few ones. Just last week I baught Sheet of Scandal, partly because I looooved the deep red sexy cover. It turned out that the cover was totally misleading. The book was NOT sexy AT ALL. I mean two quick kisses and NO sexual tenssion. It was a good funny mistery and I don’t regret buying it but I really hate to be “cheatted” with a cover.

I like covers that give me a feel of what the books about. If it’s a romance I want a nice couple like yours on Desire me. Or a nice chest … I mean guy. I love the covers on: A Cowboy Christmas, The Devil Wears Tartan & To Desire A Devil by Elizabeth Hoyt. But I also love non people covers like those on the books from Debbie Macomber & What Happens In London by Julia Quinn. A nice color is also important I saw a book recently in a very ugly pea green. I didn’t bother looking at it again to see what it was about. It made me think about that horrible pea soup my aunt used to make for us “kids”. Not so tasty (the soup and that book).

Love the cover, Robyn, and congratulations on your nomination! I agree with Emmanuelle…the cover better live up to its promise. I’ve read a few books based on the cover and back cover copy, only to find that the tone was misleading. Felt totally betrayed, I tell you! I just read Thanksgiving Night by Richard Bausch. Beautiful cover of a house at sunset, lights on the window. Very lovely.

I really like cover the have no people. The cover that have the country side with a castle or cabin in the back ground. If they have people on the cover I like when they don’t show the whole face. congrats on the nomination.

Your covers have been great, Robyn! Love this latest one. I don’t really look for anything in particular in a cover – I read the back copy and that’s how I know if a story will appeal to me. But I still want a gorgeous cover for all MY books! LOL

Congrats on the RT nod! Sweet!!

Thanks everyone. I think it’s beautiful too.

Yep, really frustrating when the tone of the book doesn’t match the cover. I know that had issues with that with some of the cartoon covers when they first started using them on the contemporary romances.

I too love the partial covers. Men first choice, a couple second and just the woman third choice. This way I can imagine then the way I want. There have been covers that totally turned me off because I didn’t care for the model(s) on the cover. I usually like the brighter covers but that’s not a requirement but helps bring attention to the cover. My least favorite are the cutsey covers.

Hello ladies! :) I like covers that have real vivid colors…I don’t know if I have a favorite but I do like vivid bright colors. AND…..I have (ahem, cough, cough) bought several books for the covers alone. It’s crazy because I know in my heart you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but their soooo pretty!!!

Hi Robyn! Congratulations on your nomination, and on the upcoming release of your new book. I love the cover of your new book, it’s gorgeous. I agree with you that the cover of a book really will grab your attention. Some of the one’s that have grabbed mine our Kathryn Smith’s “When Seducing A Duke” and “Dark Side of Dawn”. I also loved Eloisa James’ “A Duke of Her Own”.

I know I may be weird, but I like the covers that are a bit abstract. I’m not such a fan of the cutesy covers, but I do enjoy a passionate embrace once in a while.

Colors don’t matter much to me but I do enjoy brighter colors. The blue on this cover just pops! GORGEOUS

    I like it!

I don’t necessarily choose a book because of a cover, but I will definitely pass over one because of a bad cover. For me, “bad” means something I would be embarrassed to have lying on the table, like ones with clearly steroid induced muscles or men with mullets or ones that look like a mural painted on the side of a 70′s van.

My biggest cover pet peeve is when the hero and heroine on the cover look nothing like the characters are described. If she had brown hair, don’t put a blonde on the cover! Or if the hero has a very noticeable scar on his face, don’t have a perfect guy gracing the front. And if the heroine is zaftig, a size zero cover model is really irritating.

Fabulous cover, Robyn! The covers I like best are the ones that feature the hero and heroine in a sexy embrace. I used by buy books for the cover alone. Now I tend to pick books based on reviews.
