Christmas A Bit Early…

I spent a long weekend in Nashville in mid-November — I stayed at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel for a board meeting  and it was a chance to see the hotel and conference center where next summer’s RWA conference will be held. (For those non-writers, RWA (Romance Writers of America) will be holding a week-long conference of 2000 writers and industry professionals in July 2010.)  Apparently the hotel and entertainment facilities begin to decorate in July so that the reported 2 million lights are in place by early November….for Christmas.

IMGP2663 And there’s more than just 2 million clear lights!  There are stockings the size of small houses!!

There are IMGP2667tons of colored lights that look like Christmas lights!!

IMGP2661There’s a Nativity scene all around the Delta atrium, where you can ride riverboats by it….

IMGP2657

And miles of greenery decorating ledges and railings and windows and in just

about any spot where garland can be placed!

The best, most spectacular displays are the huge-mongous outdoor Christmas tree and the larger-than-life Nativity scene out on the front lawn that locals and visitors throng to, lining up dozens of cars-deep in mid-November to see!

(sorry!! my photos didn’t turn out at all!)

Did I mention they begin putting these up in July? Um, yeppers – July! So by the time the conference rolls around, in the middle of the steamy Nashville summer, the hotel will begin again so that they’re done in time for November!

IMGP0267a So, when do you begin putting up your Christmas decorations? And, are you like Clark Griswold in “Christmas Vacation” with millions and millions of lights? Or closer to Charlie Brown with his sparse little tree? Any special decorations that mean something special to you or your family?  Let me know and I’ll send out a Scottish Christmas tree ornament to one poster….along with a signed book, too!

Merry Christmas!

Terri

Terri – we put up our outside decorations last weekend because we had good weather. In Michigan, you can’t count on that for very long, especially after December 1st. So we try to get it done early – but not TOO early!

I started decorated nearly as soon as people drove away from Thanksgiving. We won’t get our tree until next weekend though, because we always get a live one and it has to last until we get back from our trek around Texas. I think my favorite decorations are the ones family members have made or that we’ve bought on vacation or … ah, gosh, I love them all!

Congratulations on seeing your book on the table at BN! That’s so cool!!!

Isn’t that hotel spectacular at Christmas? The four years that The Professor and I lived in Tennessee we would fly in and out of Nashville for the holidays and we would always make a special trip over to that hotel to see the lights. Just breath-taking.

My favorite part of decorating is unwrapping all my ornaments to put them on the tree. My parents started when I was born giving me an ornament a year so that when I got married I would have a collection for my tree. At some point when I started traveling (late teens, maybe) I started buying ornaments everywhere I went as a reminder of my trips. And I’ve had friends bring me ornaments back from their trips too (my brother brought me one from Poland and I have one from Greece from Emily and one from a friend who went to the holy land and I have a nativity carved out of olive wood from Bethlehem). Since we’re building our house we’re still at my parents’ right now and all our stuff is in storage so I won’t get to see those ornaments this year – won’t quite be the same.

Can I masquerade as a reader to win that Scottish ornament?

Hello Terri! My family and I wait with decorating our house and tree till the afternoon of December 24. Often it’s difficult to ignore the call of Christmas that makes you want to run to the attic and pull out some sparkles or snow. But we’ve always managed not to. After lunch we all unpack the boxes that contain the Christmas decorations from many years ago. We have an eclectic mix FULL of memories which come up in conversation. Do you guys remember when … Look at this, you made that the year you were six… Oh no that not so pretty bell aunt Trudy gave us the year before she died, even uglier than we thought… All of us remember the stories for we share them every year but I love hearing them again. We argue a little about what goes best where but somehow always end up loving OUR tree. It has just enough lights and lots of bulbs, stars, different hearts, bears, mini stockings. Some Santa’s and a snowman. Little angels, bows, icicles, a gingerbread house, candy canes, a frog (don’t ask it’s a crazy story), two rocking horses. And off course aunt Trudy’s bell tucked away in a small corner. Still we find room for some more treasures each year. We leave the tree in all his glory up for the 12 days of Christmas. Waiting so long before dressing the tree and our home makes the excitement even bigger I believe. It’s a tradition passed down to me by my parents (and grant parents).I wouldn’t change it for the world.

We’re going to decorate next weekend. I don’t usually decorate, but USF got the tree, so we’re doing it. Hope it’s fun!

I put up my door ornament yesterday… I love it… it’s a baard painted country style with a Santa pulling a sleigh and says “I Believe”… which I do!

I will put up and decorate our tree with most of my kids this weekend. It usually gets done the middle two weeks of December. We all have favourite ornaments and our tree is a mish mash of styles. I love the brass and crystal ornaments, each kid has their personal favourite. All the Christmas candle holders will also get put out this weekend.

It’s my favourite time to decorate. Too bad it’s so short!

    Hi Terri,
Congrats on A Storm of Passion!

I am kind of in between Clark and Charlie….and while I can appreciate all of the decorations put out by some people (like the hotel). I put up enough so that I get into the holiday spirit, but each year it seems to take a little less….as it becomes more work and hate to take it all down and pack it all away. I find that Christmas music and a tree with christmas stockings and I am good to go.

My favorite holiday treasure are the Christmas stockings that my granmother hand made for each grandchild. They are bright, colorful and sparkly and remind me of my childhood. Even though we don’t put gifts in them anymore it just wouldn’t be Christmas without them. We are passing along the tradition and make ones just like them for every new family member.

    Have a great one!

I concentrate on inside decorations because my husband is a scrooge when it comes to doing outside decorations! I have a tree triming party every year where friends and family gather round and help. I have been collecting ornaments for over 40 years (plus some old ones from my parents and my husband’s). I get the largest live tree that can fit in my house and almost every ornament is a remembrance or has a story – from my children’s homemade ones to ones we’ve gotten on vacations or given by friends and family. My husband’s uncle has given my children ornaments for every year for over 21 years and I’ve been doing the same. One year our tree fell over – it was horrible. I lost some very dear ornaments. My oldest newly married daughter started her own tree trimming party last year and is an even bigger collector of ornaments than me lol.

We put our decorations outside the Friday after Thanksgiving, but I haven’t put the tree up yet. I will get to that sometime tomorrow or this weekend. I usually put it up the day after Thanksgiving but I didn’t have time this year. Friday we put out a few lights around the front porch and a tree and a mother and baby deer in the front yard. I think it looks pretty cool. My son got an ornament every year from my sister until he was eighteen.

    Hi! Love your post :)
In Croatia we don’t have a custom of decorating our homes from the outside, only city buildings and stores are decorate with outdoor lights. Also, we put our tree on a Christmas Eve and all the decorations are out of the picture on the 6th of January. So, you see that we have only 2 weeks to enjoy our Christmas decorations :) My favourite ornament is hand-made ball made of blown glass that I was given by my grandmother’s mom.
