Cookbooks from Santa

51AygM3q+0L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_Every November I start working on an Amazon wishlist for our family. (Yes, I’m the only one who works on it, but the whole family reaps the rewards … but that’s another post.) I always add some cookbooks for me, because, well, I love to cook and I love to read. Some are always duds, but this past year I had some real winners. Here’s the books I got last year for Christmas that I used over and over this year:

  • Mom-a-licious: Fresh, Fast, Family Food for the Hot Mama in You! by Domenica Catelli – This one is full of quick healthy recipes. And it feels like it’s written by a real mom. A woman who has limited time, but still wants her kids to eat their vegetables. Moreover, she’s okay with them knowing that they’re eating them and not doesn’t try to sneak them into brownies.
  • Moosewood Restaurant New Classics — It’s my third Moosewood cook book and probably my favorite. We got it first for my in-laws and then for ourselves. It’s just a great cookbook. True we’re not vegetarians, but the food’s still great and sometimes we sprinkle bacon on top. <g>
  • CakeLove: How to Bake Cakes from Scratch by Warren Brown — (technically, this wasn’t Christmas, but mother’s day. Still, it played with the big boys and I had it five few months.) This one talks in detail 51jSdXKJNyL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_about how to bake cakes. It really demystifies everything. The recipes are crazy detailed, but the results so yummy you’ll want to cry. It’s basically foolproof. (Except for the Lemon Ginger cake. There’s the typo in that recipe. It should be 12 oz. of flour, not 2. But that to is a topic for another post.)  Generally, this book is awesome. And now I always measure my flour by weighing it. It’s so much easier!

So what cookbooks do you love? It’s time to make this years wishlist and I’m eager to add in some new cookbooks. Do you have any favorites?

I like the Amazon wishlists too. My dad always makes one, and that helps SO much!

Emily, I just emailed the Moosewood people about your bacon issues…for shame, woman!

There’s one from a long time ago, printed by Mystic Seaport, one of those “see life as it was lived” museums. It’s called Christmas Memories, and has the best recipes for everything from egg nog to roast beast. I use it every year.

I really enjoy cooking too, and have quite a collection of cookbooks myself. Some of my favorites:
Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa at Home
Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa Family Style
Nigella Lawson’s Baking and the Art of Comfort Food
And an oldie but a goodie: The Canadian Living Cookbook (1987)
I’m sure I’ll be referring to some of these wonderful books as I cook for the holidays.

I saw at Target earlier that Ellie Krieger has a cookbook out and I really like her show on Food Network. So I bet the cookbook is a good one, though I wish it was spiral bound, those are my favorites.

I’m with Emmanuelle on Martha Stewart’s Baking cookbook (I got that one for Christmas a couple of years ago) and Catherine on everything Ina Garten and Nigella Lawson (Nigella was just on Top Chef this week, did you see her?). Another one I always go to is Julia Child’s Mastering The Art of French Cooking. It’s a masterpiece.

Sorry I was away from internet all day yesterday, ladies!
Man, these sound like great cookbooks. I can’t wait to add them to my wishlist.
I do have one of the Ina Garten cookbooks. Robyn gave it to me for Christmas a couple of years ago. It’s so good. There’s these super yummy lamb kabobs. Hmmm…

I’ll definitely have to look for the Ellie Kieger, ’cause I just love her! We made the best cookies from her the other day and I totally got to pretend they were good for us.

We’re behind on Top Chef, so the episode with Negella Lawson is still in the que on Tivo. I’m excited about that one though. I love Top Chef!

And, Kristan … you told Moosewood on me? I don’t know whether to be offended or just embarrassed.

I love my old Betty Crocker cookbook I got as a wedding gift back in the early 70s. In fact it is falling apart so I went on Ebay to see if I could buy another one and I was floored when I saw them selling for $200+….for this old cookbook??? Wow. Needless to say I’ll do with the one I have (an ugly bright orange book with a sectioned pie on the front)….besides it has all my handwritten notes on the recipes I’ve altered over the years.
