Happy Halloween! It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of year already.
Fall is one of my most favorite times of year. And even though we’ve already seen snow this year (2 inches and it melted the same day)…it still feels like Fall. While a few trees still have their leaves, enough have dropped them so that when you walk down the sidewalk they crackle beneath your feet.
I can’t think about Fall without thinking of Halloween. I thought it might be fun to share our favorite, or not-so-favorite Halloween memories or our favorite halloween treats.
When our daughter was growing up we had a Halloween party at our house every year. The girls would watch scary movies, bob for apples, carve pumpkins they could take home …that kind of thing. At that time we lived in a house with a field behind so it was always very dark outside. The movies would always take place in the basement in a room with a large picture window.
One year my husband put on this scary mask, then did the flashlight-below-the-chin-thing and knocked on the window while the girls were watching the movie. How those little girls shrieked. Thinking about it still brings a smile to my lips.
Do you have a favorite memory to share? Or perhaps you could tell about a favorite treat that you enjoy making this time of year…

I met USF a few weeks before Halloween, and one of our first dates was to a Halloween party. I was a fairy princess, and he was a cowboy. It was really a fun night.

We lived in a small town so when I was young we used to walk all over town trick or treating. That was back when it was safe to do so. We would get all kinds of candy and home made goodies. Caramal apples, popcorn balls, cookies and you name it. It was great. The kids today don’t realize what they miss out on by not being able to experience a carefree Halloween.

I love scaring kids on Halloween! We usually have a fright hike, complete with bodies in graves, dead brides, a little creepy chanting…we always feel that if we don’t get at least a few screams, we’re not doing our jobs. My favorite treat was always those sticky Rice Krispy squares. The sugar high lasted for days!

I love Halloween, and it was always so much fun to get the kids dressed up in their costumes. They are too old for that now, but I remember one time that I put clown makeup on my son. He looked at himself in the mirror and started bawling. I had to wash off my hard work!
LOL!

Cheryl,
I had to laugh when I read your comment. My daughter’s first job was as a sacker for a grocery store. Every year they would have “Big Top” days where they’d have special sales. One year they had her dress as a clown and roam the store. She said she never realized how scared most little kids were of clowns.
Kristin,
Your fright hike sounds like a spooktacular good time!
Linda,
I have all those wonderful memories too…
Shana,
What a fabulous first date. My first date with my husband was to a movie…about rats!

First thing that came to mind was when I was in about 5th grade. A terrible stormy night with lots of rain. My mom said I couldn’t go and my older sister wasn’t interested. Well I just bawled my eyes out lol. Mom gave in and I went as a bum (my dads old clothes). We lived on a steep hill and part way up my brown grocery bag was so wet the bottom fell out – I can remember apples rolling down the hill but I managed to salvage my candy and although it wasn’t a lot, back then it was a huge treat and I was happy as could be lol.

Oh, I love Halloween. I loved going Trick or Treating as a kid and now as a grown up I love to hand out candy to all the cute kiddos. My favorite Halloween memory though was 5 years ago – the night before The Professor and I had just gotten engaged so that Halloween night I sat with my mom and we looked at wedding dresses on the computer in between handing out candy. It was so much fun.

I love Halloween too!
And I have so many fabulous Halloween memories, it’s hard to pick just one. I remember as a kid feeling like it was so cool that there were kids everywhere on the streets. It was like the one night a year where the town belonged to kids.
Now, I love my daughter’s excitement. This morning when I asked her how her Halloween was and she said, “It was just candy, candy, candy. I was exhausted!” Too cute!

Cindy, your story about your husband scaring the girls reminded me of a Halloween when my daughter was about six years old and she was trick-or-treating with a friend. We approached a house with lots of spooky outdoor decor and a truck parked in the drive. Just as the girls walked up to the door, two teenagers in masks jumped up in the bed of the truck and roared. My daughter was terrified! She still remembers that incident, only now, as a teenager, she’s talked about hiding with her friends on Halloween night and scaring kiddies who are trick-or-treating.

Emily,
Your daughter is just soooo cute. Hopefully, she’ll share some of that candy with you!
Catherine,
I love the story! Isn’t it interesting how those things that scare kids when they are young, become the stories that they love to tell their friends!
