State Fair bound

fair
It’s the 140th year of the Nebraska State Fair…and it started yesterday!

When I was in high school, I loved to go to the fair….mostly to hang out on the midway. I liked the sights and the sounds and the smells. The food was always great (if you didn’t consider the nutritional value or calorie count) For me corn dogs, lemon whip ice cream and funnel cakes will always make me think of the fair.

When our daughter was in grade school, she was in rabbit 4H. We had mini-lops and a New Zealand. Below is a picture of a mini-lop. A New Zealand looks like the Easter Bunny–white with ears that stand up.

What do I remember of that experience? How hot it was and how the pavilion wasn’t air conditioned. They had huge fans, but it was still hot. And I’ll let you in on a little secret…rabbits hate the heat!

Do have memories of going to a State Fair? Do you even know what a State Fair is?

I’d love to hear your stories…and be sure and include your favorite food to eat at the Fair.

I can’t imagined that the Connecticut State Fair measures up to Nebraska, Cindy, but it’s held right here in my little town. I think there’s nothing more romantic than a date to the fair…holding hands, walking around in the chilly air, riding the Ferris wheel at night. My favorite fair food has to be the giant donuts. You get them when they’re still warm, and encrusted with sugar…delicious!

Everyone should go at least once to a big state fair because there is such an energy to it.
I’ve got more memories of small town Guilford,VT’s fair where our daughter competed in the Equestrian Events. Small, hoky bands playing during the day and farmers and their wives dancing. 4-H projects. Rabbits, cows and goats.
We always left before dark because that’s when the atmosphere changed somewhat and became a little more of a partying fair and less of a family affair.
Some of those farmers just wanted to cut loose, I guess.

Unfortunately I’ve never been to a state fair but I have been to county fairs. At least I get the flavor of one if not the size lol. Oh, and I could just die for funnel cakes!

The Champlain Valley Fair (Vermont’s Largest) started this weekend. I can’t wait to get my hands on fair food – cotton candy, corn dogs, funnel cakes, and the gyro place that is always under the grandstand. I can’t eat the dairy products, so no ice cream for me, but you might see me with an enormous smoked turkey leg in my hands if they have them this year!!

BTW, the strangest food I ever saw was at the Mississippi State Fair in Jackson. Great atmosphere, but the only place where I saw Daiquiri and Pina Colada booths and with free refills to boot!!!

I have been to several fairs years ago, but I only went to the state fair once when I was a teen ager, my BF brother took us and we had a ball. I remember the funnel cakes and cotton candy the most.

    Hey, ladydawgfan,
Champlain Valley Fair is where I might pop in sometime next week. I’ll check out ladies eating corn dogs.
My daughter entered her flower arrangement exhibition this year and won (Laura Ryan).Check it out!!

    Kristan,

Giant donuts….yummmm, I can almost taste them here in Nebraska. :)

    Catslady,

We can never go wrong with funnel cakes!

    Ladydawgfan,

My girlfriend LOVES those turkey legs. She says that’s the main reason she goes to the fair.

    Quilt lady,

Thanks for mentioning the cotton candy–how could I have forgotten such a state fair staple??

    Rainy,

Sounds like you and ladydawgfan have a lot in common. Congrats on your daughter’s state fair win. Very cool!

I just went to the NY State Fair yesterday. It’s held right near my home, and averages about 60-90,000 people a day. Pretty big. The best thing is sharing the food, so you don’t feel like a pig trying everything. We had a bloomin’ onion, funnel cake, fudge, ice cream, barbecued ribs, fried dough…my mouth is still watering. Saw a canine stunt act–and high-flying pirates, too!

I’ve been to the Louisiana State Fair, I remember riding the ferris wheel.

I’ve been to the Texas State Fair, but really only to go to the TX/OU football game. The one year I could have hung around the fair, it was raining. :(

My favorite fair food are nachos (which are usually covered in that terrible processed cheese, but for some reason I still love it) and funnel cakes.

    Gayle,

My mouth is watering just hearing about all the wonderful food you “tasted.” Pass the bloomin’ onion, please

    Romantic Girl,

I don’t know what it is about that processed cheese…but I agree, it’s wonderful!
