Since it’s July, I’m going to dedicate this blog to my bichon frise, Comet, who died five years ago this month. I don’t have a picture of Comet scanned, so I’ll just include a picture to show you what a
Bichon looks like (in case you’re not sure):

This one actually looks quite a bit like Comet. We owned his mother, Candy, and he was the only one of her puppies we kept. He was the only boy (out of a litter of five) and from the moment he could walk, he was my boy.
In our family all the pets always prefer my husband (a huge animal lover)…but not Comet.
Comet loved to be whereever I was….if I was in the kitchen, he was in the kitchen. If I went outside, he went outside….I think you get the picture.
Right now we have a shih tzu, Ernie…who idolizes my husband. A cat Oreo who I think I have a chance of winning over…but with a cat you can never be sure. .. and a Blue Heeler, Shug, who I think is starting to really like me (we’ve had him two years). If you want to see a picture of him, go to my website www.cindykirk.com….I have five pictures of him in the snapshot section. Our daughter mentioned that now I have more pics of Shug than I do of her
Do you have animals? If so, do you have any tips on how I can get Oreo and Shug to like me best? Or do you know of a good book on getting an animal to bond with you? I’d appreciate any suggestions.
And, Comet, I really miss you still.

Oh, Cindy, hugs on loosing a beloved pet. The first pet I had as an adult, a cat named Edgar, died just about five years ago and I still miss him too.

My bichon frisé is named “Sweety” (his birth year was under the “s” letter) and he is one belive me. Like Comet he follows me everywhere which can be trouble sometimes… Maybe bichons are closer to women, who knows ?? Sorry I can’t help you with that…

My dad had a bichon. This is actually pretty funny if you knew my dad, a big macho guy. But he loved that dog like a child. They’d go for car rides and they’d go fishing and do everything together. My dad truly mourned when he lost Hobbes.
As for liking me best, heck, I’ve rescued my animals, bottle fed one. I’m the one who feeds them, but they still like my dh and ds best.

I have two kitties, and my favorite one is my calico Suki. She is like a little dog. She follows me everywhere. She’s sitting next to me right now.
Tips for getting the animals to like you best? Be the one who feeds them and pets them the most. Don’t be the one who takes them to the vet–make your husband do that!

Our Labs LOVE the one who takes them for walks. That’s the key to their hearts.

Here’s to good memories of Comet. They are most precious and will be with you forever.
My lab passed away in May at 13 years. She had a great life but it was still too soon. I truly think animals have M/F preferences. She was my favorite dog ever (shhh, don’t tell my other two). I loved her dearly but she loved men best. I was the poor second best.
Male or female preference seems to be very individual to every animal and I don’t think there is anything you can do to change it. Of my other two dogs, one likes only women and one likes anything on two legs, big or small, young or old, male or female. My two cats, though, do like me best. The downside of being the cats favorite is you can’t sit down, ever, without a cat in your lap. Makes reading, crafting, etc. a challenge. You might want to start thinking about the advantages of not being the favorite.

Comet must have been such a special dog. A friend of mine has a Bichon and he’s such a bright, cute little thing he makes me think about getting a Bichon for a cat companion.
I just got my copy of Your Ranch or Mine and it’s great! I’m looking forward to learning more about Mitchell. IMHO, architect is a wonderful profession for a hero.

I couldn’t imagine a home without pets. I am a cat person, but I do love my dogs too. Presently I have a beautiful big tabby named Zulu (18 lbs!), an orange marmalade tabby named Jinx and a new adoption (only two weeks now) a fluffy gray spotted tabby named Gus Gus — he was a barn kitten abandoned by his mom and we got him at 5 weeks old, named for the fat little mouse in Cinderella.
I have a shepherd boxer mix at home who is a wonderful dog and my oldest daughter has two dogs… a black and tan dachshund and a bicolour walker hound. All of our animals are rescues or come from the SPCA.
