I ♥ My Job

While I certainly adore being a romance writer, I have to confess that there are times when the job can be stressful…facing deadlines, worrying that your new book isn’t as good as the last book, reading a negative review or two. It got me to thinking about some of the jobs that seem, well, blissful, so I hit good old Google and found a list of the least stressful jobs. It’s a subjective list, of course, so bear with me.

Forester. Quite. Does anyone actually know a forester? What do they do all day? When I picture it, I imagine a person in a Smokey the Bear hat, wandering around Yellowstone, gazing at the trees. Obviously, there’s a lot more involved, but I bet there’s a fair amount of tree-gazing, too.

Toolmaker. I know McIrish would probably have a ball doing this. Personally, I’d probably doze off and cut off my thumb, which would be pretty stressful…

Florist. I have my doubts about how stress-free this job would be, but the up side is all those flowers. When stressed, a person could just bury her nose in a bouquet of roses and not emerge till the blood pressure had come down.

Dog walker. I’d think the personality of dog/walker/owner would be key, but it sure looks like fun, especially to those of us who prefer canine company to human. Whenever I see a pack of dogs coming my way in NYC, the walker always seems quite cheery.

House sitter. Oh, definitely! I wouldn’t mind doing this for a summer in some fabulous house on the coast of Oregon or Washington. Anyone looking?

Janitor. As someone who relaxes as she vacuums (all the little problems, sucked right up!), I can relate to the bliss of being a janitor. The janitors in my schools (and my kids’ schools) seem to be among the happiest people I’ve ever met.

Fishing guide. Again, wicked fun…in theory. Until you encounter giant mosquitoes or realize that you’re most likely to catch fish before 5 a.m.

Mathematician. I don’t know a lot of mathematicians, but I’m guessing that they’re people who find the certainty and reliability of numbers soothing. I often say to my kids when they’re stumped on their math homework, “Relax. There’s an answer, and we’ll find it.” As the saying goes, the numbers don’t lie.

In case you’re wondering, there was also a list of the most stressful jobs. In the top ten on the list was my own dear husband’s profession — firefighter; also taxi driver; NFL football player; and surgeon. The number one most stressful job? President of the United States. Maybe when Mr. Obama leaves office, he’ll take up forestry.

Have you ever had a job that was a pleasure to go to, so relaxing that it hardly felt like work? What would you like to try someday?

I love the idea of Mr Obama, forest ranger, seven or eight years from now!

I’m the first to admit, I complain a lot about writing. I’m very whiney. But before this, I taught middle school English and Reading to under privileged kids and that was *way* more stressful. I still have nightmares about it. Seriously, I still sometimes dream I’m in the classroom, unprepared, and losing control of the kids. And it’s been 11 years now. Yikes.
That seems like a life time ago, now. But I also knew people who thrived at that job. I think a lot of it has to do with personality. I’m an introvert, so being so over stimulated all day long made me crazy. Now, when I’m at work, no one talks to me unless I want them to.
(Okay, that’s a lie. My kids talk to me all the time and I have no control over that. But my coworkers, i.e. my characters, keep pretty quiet.)

Since I’m highly stressed at the moment (under the deadline gun, so to speak) I’m thinking about maybe being a tester of air mattresses – the kind you float on in a pool, with an indentation for your drink. A marguerita, preferably.

Mattress tester, Margo? Sounds pretty fun! Or a sleep study participant. Wonder how that pays…

You’re right, Emily, there are plenty more stressful jobs than ours. Teachers are heroes, especially in underfunded areas.

I’m at the Cape right now…thinking about becoming a park ranger, checking people into the beach. Of course, we’re having a nor’easter at the mo…

I love my job too, but I wish it were easier. I would never want to be a janitor, though! I don’t even like to clean up after myself!

    Reiki Master.
Doesn’t it just roll off the tongue in a relaxing flow? I’d like to be able to say “I’m a Reiki Master” someday. Unfortunately, I don’t have a clue what a Reiki Master does  but living in a new-agey region of the Pacific Northwest there are classes and chanting and very sooooothing souls that want to help explain it. ‘Scuse me while I go buy some warming oil and incense.

Shana, writing books is HARD!!! Especially good books, which is why you get to be so proud of yourself.

Leslie, Reiki master, how cool! Sort of like Jedi Master. As titles go, that job definitely scores. Good luck with the incense.

Oooh, housesitter sounds so fun! And it would go so well with writing (especially since I get tons writing done when I’m not in my own house). I’m imagining a mansion with an ocean view and a nice big infinity pool. I could write my heart out then chill in the pool when I need a break…perfect!

I always thought being a florist would be fun. I’d love to be creative in that way. Though I imagine Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day is very stressful.

I too am under the deadline gun right now and I’m so super stressed and not really having fun, but I can honestly say I wouldn’t want another job. I love being a writer. But it is very challenging and makes me crazy most of the time.

Another job I’ve really always wanted and this probably sounds so stupid, but I’ve always wanted to paint windows. You know how they do in the front of shops or fast food restaurants and they paint big letters or seasonal pictures? That just seems like it would so fun.

Oh, oh, or maybe a judge at a massage school so I could give them all ratings…that sounds particularly good right now.

I think it would be fun to have a job like new flavor tester at Baskin Robbins or Ben & Jerry’s, if I could do it without gaining weight…I don’t know if their testers have to spit it out like wine judges.

Also, if I could read books by talented writers only, I would enjoy being an editor.

And I’d also be willing to supervise a Calvin Klein model at his photo shoot, hee hee.

Mary, I like the way your mind works! And heck, judging at a massage school is right up there with heaven.
