I admit it, I’m addicted to Dr. Phil. I’ve watched talk shows since Phil Donahue was on the air, so it’s not like it’s just the tough-talkin’ Texan who has me hooked. They’re characters. Real, honest-to-goodness, couldn’t-write-this-stuff-and-get-it-past-an-editor characters. Some of these people are certifiable, some of them are simply troubled, some of them are just looking for their fifteen minutes
But one thing that Dr. Phil does is zero in on his guests, and within a few minutes, hit their core issues. That deep emotional conflict that drives that mother to hover over her child’s every move—even though her child is eighteen and about to go to college. That trauma in a grown man’s past that now makes him unable to commit. The dark secret a grandmother is hiding that keeps her from being a part of her grandchildren’s lives.
I’ll be watching the show, seeing Dr. Phil grill a guest, and wham I have the idea I’ve been searching for. Or I suddenly know why my character has that control issue. Or I have another idea, one to file away for later (and there are a ton of those in my little mental files). I’ll see one guest tell their story about being abandoned as a child, and that will get my mental gears thinking about how abandonment might affect the child I have in my current book. Or what the abandoning mother’s perspective might be.
What I see in Dr. Phil’s hot seat are amazing novel possibilities. Marriages in crisis, relationships on the rocks, daughters trying to connect with their mothers, sons on the outs with their fathers, friends who have been betrayed. There are people down on their luck, others who have hit the lottery. You name a character type, and chances are, they’re going to be on the Dr. Phil show before the season finale
So if you’re looking for characters, try turning on the television at 3:00 p.m. EST. Chances are, you’ll find what you’re looking for –sitting on Dr. Phil’s right
Do you watch Dr. Phil or another show like that? Do you get character ideas from there? Or just like to sit back and be entertained?
I’ll choose a winner from one of the comments to receive a copy of REALLY SOMETHING, where you’ll meet a few characters in Tempest, Indiana!

I feel better about watching shows like that. Did you see the show with the newlyweds who didn’t seem to know each other at all a few weeks ago? Don’t clery require pre-martial counseling to discuss the number of kids, etc.?

I used to watch Dr. Phil but then he got involved with Britney so I thought I’d just back off. A bit crazy for me! Now I’m pure Ellen!

What a great way to find ideas for your characters! I rarely watch Dr. Phil, but I have watched several episodes lately. It can be entertaining to watch people talk about their issues. As you pointed out, he certainly has some interesting people on as guests.

I don’t get to watch many talk shows because of my work schedule but I do see how a person could get inspiration for characters in a book. The guests can be quite interesting.

Neat way to get ideas! I work so I miss most of the talk shows. When I’m off, I like to watch Ellen. She makes me laugh. I sometimes would catch Dr. Phil in the late night on weekends, but it doesn’t seem to be on any more.

I’m not a Dr. Phil fan, but I’m always amazed at the strange places characters pop up. Once I got elements of a character at the pound. We were there looking for a cat and there was this volunteer who went above and beyond. She brought camp chairs so people would have a comfortable place to hold the cats. She brought toys, hand sanitizers, and relaxing music.
I just thought, how fascinating is this? Here’s this gorgeous young woman who’s totally devoted to cats. She’s spending all her time with animals. So what is she avoiding?
I took elements from this woman to make my Jane from Her Wildest Dreams.

I admit that I don’t watch much daytime TV but I can see getting completely addicted–it’s strangely fascinating to get inside people’s heads, especially when they seem to think/feel so differently than we might! People watching, in all its forms, seems to be an endless source of ideas!

I too love to watch Dr. Phil, though I don’t get to watch him as often as I used to. His shows are always interesting and you are right. He always gets to the heart of the matter, and not only has them on TV, but honestly tries to help resolve the issues that brought them to the show in the first place, not just to publicize their problems.

Success! I finally got a post up there. Honest to goodness, I thought I was going to scream. Turns out my firewall was the problem (who’d have thunk that? That wasn’t even one of the answers in all the Google searches I did on why comments might not show up in WP blogs).
Anyway, I have been here all weekend, reading comments and enjoying my invisible, LOL, visit!
Emily, love the character you came across in real life! I meet lots of strange people it seems when I get out of the writer cave from time to time. Either they gravitate toward me or I just notice them more.
But I do always wonder about that couple not talking to each other in the restaurant. Or the younger woman with the older man, etc.
Kristan, I used to listen to Dr. Joy! But she’s not on my local radio anymore, and I haven’t found her on Sirius, at least when I’m in the car. I do miss that show.
So glad to be able to post finally! And to be here

Welcome to JQ, Shirley! (And do you know how weird it was to type that? Don’t come across many Shirleys.)
I’ve watched a few snippets of Phil but now I only see him as a caricature — too many people have poked fun at or imitated him. On the rare occasions I watch daytime TV, I’d rather watch Ellen or The Doctors.
How cool though that his guests provide so much inspiration. You never know where a character will turn up.
