Maybe it’s because Spring seems to have finally arrived (trees and flowers are blooming and best of all, I can finally put my winter coat away..yipee!!) that my thoughts are turning to summer vacation. Because of the downturn in the economy, many of us will be looking for fun places close to home.
If someone asked you for a recommendation of a fabulous site close to where you live, what would you recommend?

Me? If you lived in the heartland, I’d tell you to check out the South Dakota Badlands. I haven’t been there recently but I still remember the awe I felt gazing out over the inspiring landscape. The crazy thing was, when I had stopped there it was only because we were on our way to Mount Rushmore (another great place to visit, btw)
I’m interested in hearing your recommendations. Someone the other night told me I MUST see the Grand Canyon (yep, that’s right I’ve never been there)…and I know there are so many wonderful places that I’ve never seen. C’mon, tell me, what would you recommend? It doesn’t even HAVE to be near where you live. Just a great place that shouldn’t be missed.

Well, you can’t beat Michigan for beaches – and for very user-friendly lakes, large and small. There’s nothing in the Great Lakes that will bite you.

In central Texas, I’d recommend the hill country, which, well … basically is central Texas. But it’s so nice to get out of the city and enjoy the beautiful rolling hills. It’s particularly nice in the spring when the wildflowers are in bloom.

I agree with Emily. The wildflowers are so pretty this time of year. Brenham is a nice litle town (with an ice cream factory to tour!).

Cape Cod National Seashore for pristine sand beaches and the mighty Atlantic…Provincetown for great seafood, whale watches and great jewelry stores…the smell of pine and the constant wind, a few lighthouses scattered here and there…sigh! Can you tell I just got back?
Cindy, I went to the Badlands this past summer. What a haunting and terrible beauty! It was stunning. Closer to your place, we also went to Beatrice, Nebraska. Lovely town, and the Homesteaders National Monument was one of the best places we visited on our journey across country.

My favorite vacation spot is Las Vegas – and I’m not a gambler OR a drinker. On one visit to Vegas, I did a tour that took me to the Grand Canyon…and yes, you do need to go.

I was born and raised in the hill country in Texas and can agree with the recommendations there – lots of beautiful scenery and lakes and whatnot. But since it’s already been mentioned, I’ll list something closer to where I’m currently living (though not for much longer!!!) We’re very close to the Smokey Mountains and Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge TN. We love driving the Cherohola Skyway, one of the most scenic drives in America and it’s truly breathtaking.

Okay, Laura…the Grand Canyon is definitely on my list.
Michigan, central Texas, Cape Cod National seashore…I’m getting itchy feet and the travel season hasn’t even started!

I just got back from visiting Savannah and I loved it. It’s a beautiful city and if you’re a history lover then I would highly recommend going there. There are just so many interesting stories and people (especially the ghosts).
I already have two stories ideas bouncing around in my head from the trip.
