Who likes romantic movies? Do you see my hand waving in the air? Darn, right. I’m always looking for movies to rent that will let me feel happy and satisfied when the credits roll. Right now the ones I have on my to-be-rented listed are Nights at Rodanthe, Freedom Riders (it doesn’t sound like a romance to me…but someone recommended it) and August Rush (another non-romance sounding title)

Web MD recently came out with a list of top romantic movies. Here they are:
Breakfast at Tiffanys *
When Harry Met Sally
The Way We Were *
Harold and Maude
Love Story *
The Lake House
Roman Holiday
Sleepless in Seattle *
Doctor Zhivago *
I’ve seen the ones marked with an * I’d say they were all “romantic”, but not necessarily a romance (which to me comes with the requisite HEA (happily ever after). If I invest time in watching a movie and bonding with the characters, I want a happy ending. What about you?
Let me know what you think of the movies I’m listed and, if you can recommend some good movies (remember…for me that means a happy ending) I’d appreciate it! And I know others reading these posts will thank you, too!

So are the ones without *’s the ones you haven’t seen? Because if you haven’t seen it, I’d recommend The Lake House. I really liked that one. And, of course, when Harry Met Sally, ’cause that’s fantastic.
It’s funny that you posted about this today, because I was actually going to ask for romantic movie recommendations in my next blog. I don’t go to the movies very often, so I never see the latest movies anymore.
I’ve really been wondering if Australia is worth watching. Has anyone seen it? It looked good to me, but I’d hate to invest all that time and emotional energy in the movie and then have them both die horribly at the end.

Emily, You’re right, the ones without the * are the ones I haven’t seen. Okay, so I’ll definitely see The Lake House (happy ending, right?)
I’d like to know about Australia too. Like you, I don’t want any horrible deaths (or really ANY deaths) at the end.

An Affair to Remember (SO good!)
While You Were Sleeping
A Walk in the Clouds
The Illusionist (a great one!)
Serendipity
Jane Eyre
Just Like Heaven

I kind of agree with you, Cindy, that most of those movies aren’t my idea of romantic. My mom said Australia wasn’t very good, so I haven’t gone to see it.
I like Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow. I think that’s romantic.

Hi Ms Cindy,
Here some of my romantic recs:
#North and South (Mr Richard Armitage is so wonderful in this)
#Four Weddings and A Funeral
#Love, Actually (I watch this one every Christmas)
#Sense and Senseability (the new 2007 BBC version; so good)
and I am brave enough to recommend some films that don`t have a very happy ending but are very romantic films too:
#Amelie (French film at it´s best)
#Out of Africa (I so want to go to a safari in Kenya every time I watch this)
#The Age of Innocence (bittersweet, but ah, so romantic)
From your list definitely watch When Harry Met Sally (so good)

Go see Australia – don’t think you’ll be disappointed
My favorite movie – Forever Young (when I still adored Mel Gibson)- but it’s still my favorite. Again, you won’t be disappointed.
I’m okay without the HEA – I know I’m in the minority. I guess because I like surprises (even if sad). I don’t want to know how everything ends all the time.

Oh, so many good movie recommendations! I love, love, love all the Jane Austins. And Sliding Doors and Love Actually. Actually, this makes me think of one of my all time favorites, Playing By Heart, which I just adore. It’s similar to Love Actually in that it has multiple story lines. Definitely rent it.
Margo, I thought I was the only person who loved IQ. I should rent that again, because I thought it was totally charming.

Hmm, I think Amelie has a great happy ending. One of my favorite movies ever.
Other good romantic movies:
10 Things I Hate About You
50 First Dates
American President
Defending Your Life (Meryl Streep, Albert Brooks, awesome!)
Hitch
My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding
Princess Bride
Wedding Singer
Clearly I lean toward the comedic side of romantic.

When I walk on the treadmill, the only thing that keeps me on it is if I’m watching a movie.
So, keep those titles coming!

When Harry Met Sally is probably my all time favorite movie.
Roman Holiday (with Audrey Hepburn) is a close second. Although, you might see is as a romantic movie without the HEA – depending on how you look at it. But I LOVED it!
I wasn’t a fan of The Lake House.
I agree with The American President and Princess Bride.

You know what’s interesting…is that a lot of these movies I’ve never even heard of, so ThankYouThankYouThankYou.
Sometimes it’s hard when I go to the video store to know what’s good. Or some things seem romantic but end up being…not.
I really am writing all these down…and, as I continue the treadmill routine, I’ll need a lot of movies….so keep the titles coming.

I will say this about Sleepless in Seattle, Solveig.I didn’t like it at all either the first time I saw it. typically, I don’t like stories where the heroine thinks she’s in love with one man, but oops, she was wrong, she just hadn’t met her soul mate yet. In real life, it’s never that simple and I think movies that portray love like that set people up for romantic failure. But that’s probably a topic for another post.
Back to Sleepless in Seattle … like the second or third time I watched it, I decided it was really good. There are a lot of really wonderful moments in there.
And in case you’re wondering why I kept watching a movie I didn’t like, it’s because my sister loved it. And I’m a push over.
Oh, and I also love Ever After. Seen it like, hundreds of times.

Solveig, An Ideal Husband is one of my all time favorite movies. I adore it.
Cindy, I’d also recommend Stardust if you haven’t seen that. And Return to Me is wonderful and I thought The Holiday was charming.
Watching Sleepless in Seattle just makes me want to watch You’ve Got Mail b/c they’re on screen together in that movie.
