I don’t have a Facebook page or account or whatever it’s called. But like all of you, I get invitations a few times a week from people asking me to join their Facebook page. Some of these people I don’t know, and I treat their emails kind of like Spam. But last week my 90-year-old grandmother invited me to join! How crazy is that? My grandma has a Facebook page, and I don’t!
And then an ex-boyfriend invited me to join his page, and I wondered why he would want me as a “friend.” Wouldn’t his new girlfriend or wife or whoever be a little upset that we were communicating? Wouldn’t my husband be a bit annoyed? If the shoe were on the other foot, I’d be annoyed!
My sister has a Facebook page, but she said she won’t let my grandma be her friend because her friends post pictures from parties where they are all drinking and doing who knows what. She’s looking for a job right now, and I reminded her that employers sometimes look at Facebook pages when they are hiring, and maybe she should rethink whatever is on her page. The look on her face was like a light bulb going off.
And then I hear people talking about their old acquaintances. How so-and-so is married to this really great guy, and how she has perfect kids, but how so-and-so is an unemployed loser who lies about his or her age to get dates. From what I can gather, if I did find all my old friends from high school, I would either feel like a complete loser or a smug jerk. Neither are probably good places for me to be.
See, why I’m not on Facebook? I don’t need this stress! I mean, how bad would I feel if I denied my grandma as a friend, and how much trouble would I be in if I started friending (is that a word?) ex-boyfriends?
Anyone else stumbling through this virtual world?

Employers look at people’s facebook page. I don’t have a facebook page either so I don’t know how exactly it works but how would they know who it was?
Okay, they just said something on the news about facebook and your grandparents.
Anyway, I don’t have facebook or a myspace page so I’m probably way behind the technological times but I do, however, have a secret blog that no one knows about…

I’m with you, Shana…I don’t have a Facebook page. It’s easy enough to find me if you type my name in Google.
I know a lot of people who lose hours in Facebook, just sort of wandering through the virtual world, happening on people they barely knew, checking out the pictures. I think it’s a great tool for reconnecting with people you really care about, but it’s no replacement for real contact. I wonder how the essence of friendship will change in the next couple of decades. Love it or hate it, Facebook and that type of communication is here to stay.

I don’t have a Facebook page. I wonder sometimes if I should just for promotional purposes, but I’ve been resisting. I spend enough time on the computer as it is. (Waaaay too much, actually.) Why would I want to spend more time? I’m looking for ways to spend less time on-line and more time out in the real world as it is.
I do sometimes wonder if I’m going to completely miss my 20 year high school reunion. It should be this year and I’ve heard nothing about it. Maybe they decided to invite only people on facebook?

I have a Facebook page and I love it. What you forget is that you can invite or refuse anyone you want. I personally would not admit an old boyfriend because, like you, I would not like my boyfriend to admit old girlfriends. The trick is to just choose your Fb-friends carefully. As for people putting others down; I have not seen anything like that on my page but if I did I´d just throw them out. Simple. It´s your page, you can do whatever you want :Ö)

I don’t have a Facebook page, either – but I’ve got a Myspace page (which I understand is becoming passe). Can’t you set your Facebook page to “private” like you can on Myspace?

My Facebook is private. Most are, I think. I really prefer FB to MySpace, and have a lot of fun on there. It’s mostly friends from high school and now. But my husband’s family has started really getting on there, and my 74 year old mother-in-law is one of my friends on FB.
You’re probably getting all those requests because they gave FB the password to their e-mail and then FB sends out an e-mail to everyone in their address book. Most people probably have no idea they are sending you those invites, esp since you don’t have a FB account anyway.
It is good fun, but I don’t see any gossip on their either. I’m fairly careful of who I friend though.

I have a facebook account and I do like it but now on yahoo’s home page they are saying now there is a virus you can get from facebook it’s in the apps that people send you to down load on your facebook page like the flower apps etc so I do not do them any more.
It’s still nice to find old school friends

I was totally against Facebook, then all of a sudden in like one week *everyone* I knew was on, so I reluctantly joined. But I totally love it. I thought I’d hate being in contact with people from high school, but it’s actually kind of nice. There are many people I’m friends with on Facebook I have a passing interest in keeping sort of in touch with, but whom I’d never in a million years email. Plus, I’m 3000 miles from home and I like making sure I keep in touch with old friends. I don’t do the applications, though, and I have *everything* locked down so that only people on my friends list can see my things — and even then, I keep it pretty clean (which is easy because I’m kind of a square). I’m terrified of MySpace and never got into that site at all.
