The other day, I got a nice surprise in the mail — a good friend made me a CD mix. Dragged down by deadlines and diet, I’d been having a so-so day when the little package arrived (Come on, it’s January 29. These resolutions aren’t fun anymore! )
So, I popped the CD into the player and suddenly a ho-hum day was elevated to a new level. A couple of the songs made me laugh. Some made me nostalgic. Some of them made me feel pretty and powerful. All, in one way or another, reminded me of the beauty of our friendship.
Isn’t music’s power amazing? It can transform your mood and transport you to another time.
Here are some songs that always take me away:
Bon Jovi’s LIVIN’ ON A PRAYER always makes me smile and remind me of my daughter. It has special meaning for us.
Don Henley’s BOYS OF SUMMER takes me way back to a relationship that wasn’t particularly good for me, but it certainly shaped me.
On the other hand, Madonna’s LA ISLA BONITA always leaves me a little breathless. It takes me back to a time that seems like another life ago, to careless days when it seemed I’d be young forever.
I remember my father listening to classic mellow 70s rock on the radio in our kitchen, but ultimately, the song that most reminds me of him is The Sound of Music’s EDELWEISS. From Elton John to Captain von Trapp. Go figure.
Here’s a slightly embarrassing one – anytime I hear the Bay City Rollers’ SATURDAY NIGHT, I’m instantly in sixth grade again writing an on-going story with my best friend Callie. We used to pass a notebook back and forth. She’d write a chapter, then I would… <sigh> Good times!
When I hear Stevie Wonder’s SIR DUKE, I’m in junior high school marching band (yes, I was a band geek!). I can almost feel the chafe of that hot, stiff, crimson polyester uniform… and the rush of marching at halftime.
Oh, and I can’t forget to mention IT’S RAINING MEN by the Weather Girls – it will always and forever put a smile on my face and remind me of dancing with my girls at the annual Harlequin party.
Sometimes the lyrics fit the situation. Sometimes the music evokes a feeling. Either way, there’s nothing like the perfect song to transport you to a better place or a different time, like a mind vacation.
How about you? What are the songs that take you away or have special meaning for you?

I’m often amazed at music’s ability to evoke emotion. As a writer, I sometimes find myself jealous. I’ll be writing away and think, you know if I could just have the reader cue up such-and-such song right now, it would really give the scene more punch.
so … some of the songs I love. Like you, I love Boys of Summer. Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl. Van Morrison’s You Don’t Know Me. Oh, just about anything by ABBA.
The list could go on and on …

Emily, so true about cuing the music for a scene!
When I first started writing, I had a bad habit of including song lyrics in my books because they conveyed just the right mood. But my editors would line them out because of permissions. I would get so irked.
By the way, BROWN EYED GIRL was one of the songs on that great CD! That one always makes me happy!

Music has always been an intrinsic part of my life … lately, I’ve been playing the sound track from the movie Mama Mia – because it’s uplifting and fun, and makes me want to dance!

Partridge Family original album always does it for me, when it comes to putting me in a good mood. It was the first album I ever received that was *my* music (a birthday gift), not my parents’. Ironically, they gave it to me. Around the same time we got a tape recorder (size of a kleenex box) with a microphone, so my sister and I would imagine ourselves as pop stars. Karaoke in its early days…

I love music. Can’t imagine my life without it. I have far too many favorite songs to mention but I love the Eagles, Melissa Etheridge, Martina McBride, and a million others. I think I have pretty eclectic taste. Hey Margo, if you get tired of ABBA for your dancing music, try some Kool and the Gang, I dare you to keep still with their stuff. Oh or old Phil Collins…

Debbie, was that the red album cover? The one with I THINK I LOVE YOU? I happen to have that song on my iPod! Have any of the Karaoke tapes survived? Cute!
Good tunes, Robyn!

Serenissima, that is a great list.
After reading everyone else’s posts, I can help but ad a plug for my favorite soundtrack … to the tv show Scrubs. It’s just fantastic music.

Oh gosh some great songs here! One song that always makes me happy is I’M WALKING ON SUNSHINE and I love the song VENTURA HIGHWAY. Oh, does that song take me back to summer days! I love Simon & Garfunkel’s song, BRIDGE OVER TROULBED WATER. Just love it! They had such good harmony!
Then there is Prince’s famous song, 1999 and LITTLE RED CORVETTE. Good dance songs! He had some really good hits!
I agree the EAGLES have some great songs! Oh yeah, another song I love but don’t remember who sings it is STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. It is soulful, great guitar music, but a little edgy.
Just remembered Phil Collin’s hit, SUSIDIO (hope I spelled it right) that is another good dance song! Great blog because I absolutely love music! There are so many songs I love but can’t remember them all!

Oooh, I LOVE Simon and Garfunkel, Michelle! Their greatest hits disk is one of my all time favorites.
Led Zeppelin sings STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. Yet another fabulous song. And for some completely unrelated reason, I remembered another one that takes me back to high school — Leonard Skynard’s FREE BIRD. Every time we had a student assembly, some wisenheimer would shout FREE BIRD. Now when I hear the beginning guitar strains, I’m transported back to the auditorium and a voice in my mind shouts, FREE BIRD. It’s a visceral reaction.
