Best and Worst Movies in 2008

They say the worst was The Love Guru with Mike Myers. I wouldn’t know – the trailers were enough to convince me to stay home for that one.

Fool’s Gold with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey looked too stupid even to rent. Which makes me really mad – because there are so many great romantic comedies written by (drum roll) romance ruthors! Why doesn’t Hollywood come to the experts when they want to make a Romance?

M. Knight Shyamalan’s The Happening got panned, too. But I don’t know what this guy could do to top The Sixth Sense. Another disappointment to me was Burn After Reading. I thought it was pathetic, even though I think it got a couple of decent reviews.

I’ve seen a few articles that call The Dark Knight (Batman) the best movie of 2008. But I would have to disagree. Slumdog Millionaire tops my list this year. It was one of the best films I’ve seen in a very long time. Not to say that Heath Ledger wasn’t fabulous as the joker. He was spectacular. And since I’m not a Christian Bale fan, I’ll just say he was ok for Batman. But Slumdog Millionaire had all the right elements and was brilliantly written. You’ve got to see it if you haven’t already.

Mama Mia was a great, upbeat film, but you have to like musicals, and be ready for a lot of ABBA.

What about W? Did anyone see it?

And I’m curious about The Pineapple Express – It lookd like a typically bad-taste teen flick, but I could be wrong. Did anyone see it? Care to give us a review?

What’s on your list? If you could narrow it down, what do you think was the one best, and one worst movie last year?

I didn’t think Fool’s Gold was that bad. The Happening, yes. And I didn’t like Burn After Reading, either. Supposedly, the Coen brothers worked on No Country one day and this the next, alternating between screenplays.

I loved Wall-E, Dark Knight and Iron Man.

I just saw Burn after Reading this past weekend. Have to say I agree with you on that one. I was kind of disappointed.

I really liked Mama Mia and Sex and the City.

Sadly, we just don’t see many movies these days. In theaters, this year, I saw Wall-E (fantastic) and City Ember (very good–but then, the book is one of my absolute favorites!)

We haven’t seen Dark Knight yet. I’m feeling … I don’t know, hesitant. I’ve heard so much about how dark it is. I’m a little worried I’ll be depressed or something afterward.

The one movie that we rented that I was disappointed in is Tropic Thunder. It had some really funny parts, but really I thought uneven. And Tom Cruise’s part was just disturbing and strange.

I wanted to chime in and add my two cents on Burn After Reading. I kept waiting for it to becoming funny and well, that never happened.

I loved Wall-E and the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. I love Daniel Craig as Bond!

I’m not sure I remember everything I saw in 08. I loved, loved, loved Mamma Mia, but I love musicals and love ABBA.

I loved Iron Man. I didn’t think Tropic Thunder was as funny as it should have been, not surprising though as I always think that of Ben Stiller movies. I enjoyed the Dark Knight and the Indiana Jones movie, cause well, it was Indy. I thought Hancock was a great surprise, I really loved it as well.

I didn’t see Burn After Reading b/c I hate the Coen brothers. We rented Fool’s Gold and it was cute, but not amazing. As far as romantic comedies, I thought 27 Dresses was very charming as well as Definitely, Maybe. I also enjoyed 21, What Happens in Vegas (hmmm…a theme is arising…), Traitor and Wanted.

And clearly I spent entirely too much time on this reply…

I absolutely loved Mamma Mia (the humor, the songs) and Twilight (the romance, the vampires).

But I hated Sweeny Todd. Just chopping off people’s heads and making pies of them… GROSS!!

Stefanie, I agree the concept of Sweeney Todd is gross — why it’s been a popular Broadway musical still baffles me — but I think the movie was well done. Alan Rickman is my favorite villain, and no one plays a sympathetic lunatic like Johnny Depp. (Watch “Secret Window” if you want more proof.) The singing in Todd is surprisingly good – the soundtrack is up for a Grammy.

It’s a sad comment on our social life, but we didn’t make it to the theater at all last year, not even for Indiana Jones or the X-Files. Sigh. Saw Todd at a sneak peek screening on my birthday in late ’07. Will probably make it for Public Enemies and Alice in Wonderland, though.

I didn’t see enough movies last year to comment. I did see Burn After Reading and hated it. The best movie I’ve seen THIS year is Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood.

Me too, Shane, I just thought it was brilliant, nearly flawless.

They made Gran Torino in my area. In fact, Clint Eastwood had an office in a building about 4 miles from my house. He became sort of a fixture around here.

Oh, yeah! The organist at the beginning is the father of my son’s friend. They were looking for a keyboard player and this kid’s dad fit the bill.

Hate Abba, loved Mamma Mia…I said I’ve never had such a good time at such a bad movie. Somehow, the parts exceeded the sum (I know, it’s usually backwards). I think I could watch Meryl Streep scrub a toilet and find her amazing.

Just saw Defiance (yes, yes, am in love with Daniel Craig, just like the rest of you)…I haven’t cared so much about a movie in a long, long time.
