Oscar noms

Oscar StatueI have to admit that I was terrible about seeing movies in 2008. Oh, I went to a few must sees like The Dark Knight, Quantum of Solace, Iron Man and Tropic Thunder (Robert Downey Jr. actually got nommed for it!), but most of the movies that are showing up on the Oscar noms…not so much. Whoops. Not sure if it was due to a crazy year for me or a crazy year for the movies. Probably the former. :)

Any must sees on the nomination list that you absolutely loved?

Oscar StatueOn an Oscar tangent, one of the things I’m excited for is the buzz around Kate Winslet. I love me some Kate Winslet acting and am thrilled she is in the major hunt for an award this year. Being nominated for one movie instead of two will likely help her chances too. She has some pretty stiff competition though, and with the Academy Awards sometimes you just never know whose name will out on Oscar night!

So who are you rooting for? What movies did you see that were nominated? Or what movies do you think should have been?

Here is a link to the Oscar nominees in case you missed ‘em!

I was sort of frustrated by the nominees this year, mostly because Gran Torino was completely shut out which I think was a huge mistake. It was really fantastic and rumor has it, Clint’s last acting movie which would seem it would have at least pulled a sympathetic nomination.

That being said, I haven’t seen many of the big nominees, some because I’m not interested and some because we live in a place that doesn’t get a lot of non big-budget films. We always have to drive to another city to get to any independent films. I think tonight we might drive to see Slumdog Millionaire, it’s finally hit a theatre sort of near us (my brother saw it last week and said it was wonderful). Also just opening, Frost/Nixon and Revolutionary Road (no desire to see this sure-to-be-weep-fest regardless of loving Kate myself). No sign of The Reader, Milk, The Wrestler and Doubt was only in a nearby town for like a week so we missed it.

Back in my life PK (pre kid) I was a serious Oscar hound. I’d usually seen all the movies. We’d host a big party. After everyone left, I’d stay up late and give acceptance speeches in the mirror. (A habit I formed as a child after watching the Oscars with my mom.) It was great fun.

Sadly, now we rarely make to the movies. So the only movies I saw this year were Wall-E and Tropic Thunder.

Maybe I need to start watching The Emmy’s.

I saw Benjamin Button, and thought it was interesting … but not very compelling. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was by far a much better movie. Those were the only two I’ve seen. I’m waiting for Nixon/Frost to come to DVD, and I only heard about The Reader a couple of days ago. Might go see that if I can find it this weekend!

I’ve only seen Benjamin Button so I can’t really give much of an opinion other than I thought it was interesting and he did a good job even though I’m not a big Brad Pitt fan. I do think somehow though that Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten the short end of the stick too many times. I think he’s a great actor.

I had to go to the link because I didn’t even know the nominations were out. Of those films, I saw The Dark Knight and Wall-E and that was it. I do want to see Slumdog Millionaire, but who knows if I ever will.

I’ve been a fan of Kate Winslet ever since I saw “Heavenly Creatures.” She’s been nominated so many times, I hope she finally wins. I’m also rooting for Heath Ledger. He was amazing as the Joker. I thought “The Dark Knight” got snubbed for Best Picture.

I went and seen Revolutionary Road and The Reader to get my Kate Winslet fix. She was absolutely stunning in both movies, as was Leo in RR.

I haven’t seen nor do I plan to, The Dark Knight. I just don’t like Christian Bale as Batman. I know that I am missing an amazing performance by Heath, but I just can’t do it.

Benjamin Button was a really good movie. Brad Pitt does a great job, and Cate Blanchett is fantastic as usual. I am hoping that BB wins for best picture, but we’ll see.

As for the rest I’ll catch most of them on dvd at some point.

I’m rooting for Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, Kate Winslet (even though I haven’t seen The Reader yet), Anne Hathaway, and Heath Ledger.
