Remember when…

My mom was visiting last week and she asked me what my favorite Christmas gift was when I was a child. It was a difficult question for me because while I remember loving certain things as a little girl, what I remember from Christmas is more about our family traditions than specific gifts although I do remember when I got my pair of white roller skates with the blue wheels that my older brother had given me – so cool!

But I did have lots of favorites when I was kid. I loved coloring books and crayons and I loved books. I played with Barbie for entirely too long, I think I was in Jr. High when I finally packed them away and it made me so sad. In addition to Barbies I really loved my Barbie Fashion Plates. Do you remember those? There are probably an entire generation of women in fashion related jobs simply because of these cool little things. I loved making different outfits with the map pencils and oh, man it was so much fun.

Legos were another favorite of mine as a child, though I was always so domestic I never could make cool things like rockets or dinosaurs, no I made furniture and houses. Of course this was before all the cool Lego kits they sell now with all the different creatures and vehicles you can create. I think my very favorite though from when I was pretty young was my Lite Bright. Oh my gosh, how fun were those? It was always very distressing to me though after I’d punched through a pattern because then the color guide was gone and I didn’t know what to do. I’ve always been one to follow the rules and having too much freedom stifles my creativity. I guess I’m weird that way. But I think I’d totally play with a Lite Bright if I had one today…

So how about you? What were your favorites? Were you a tomboy or did you love baby dolls? Did you love Lincoln Logs or Tinker Toys?

Barbies, Barbies, Barbies… I got my first at age 6 and like you, played until I was about 14. When I was 9 I desperately wanted a beautiful Chrissie with the long growing hair… but once I got her she couldn’t compare with the Barbies and the hair just didn’t look like it did on TV. I played a lot with Lego… back then you didn’t get kits like you do now, you got boxes to make things with and I kept mine and passed it on to my kids (my Barbies had Lego houses and accessories).

The Christmas present I remember best from when I was young was the year I got a Sunshine Family Farm. Anybody else remember the Sunshine Family? They were like the hippy answer to Barbie. You could buy the house, the farm and even the workshop where they could “weave” and throw pottery. It was great.

But I also have a slew of toy memories about the toys I didn’t get. There were all kinds of things that my sister had (she was older), so my parents wouldn’t buy me, because they thought we should share. But she was crazy about her stuff and would *never* share. So I never got to have an Easy Bake Oven or Fashion Plates.

As an adult, I told that story to a friend and she hunted down a set of fashion plates for my birthday one year. It was great! And I can’t wait to get them out so my girl can play with them. I think she’s nearly old enough.

Jacks. I loved playing Jacks! My best friend and I spent hours playing on her porch, because it was ultra-smooth cement.

And we lived in our roller skates – traveled everywhere on them!

Am I weird? My favorites were Star Wars action figures.

The most memorable Christmas present of my childhood was my Barbie camper. I’d wanted one for so long and I’ll never forget how excited I was when I saw it under the tree Christmas morning.

I remember the Christmas I got my first new two-wheel bicycle, and riding it up the hill by our house that cold but sunny day. I did get an Easy Bake Oven but since I wasn’t very domestic (still not) I tended to play with my Matchbox cars collection. And boy, did I love getting books. I still have the Asterix and Obelix books I read when I was 8 and 9, and they’re still fun to read.

I loved my Pound Puppies stuffed toy. I always wanted an Easy Bake Oven, but I never got one.

Oh, Jane, I remember my first Pound Puppy!

I never got an Easy Bake Oven either and I always wanted one. *sigh*

I thought it was pretty fun too, Emily. Thanks for playing with me, everyone.
